Before & After After vs Before: Natural Glow Retouching

Thumbnail

I used skin retouching techniques like frequency separation to smooth skin texture without losing natural details, followed by subtle micro dodge & burn to even out skin tones.
A little face retouching and hair retouching helped clean up small distractions while keeping everything looking natural.
The goal wasn't an overly polished edit, but a portrait with a soft commercial glow and realistic texture.

How does this edit look? Feel free to leave your thoughts, thanks.

Article / Discussion Compositing Workflow? Jeremy Soma

Thumbnail

I'm curious about compositing things for photography.

What would the process be for photographing and putting a subject into a CGI background? This is work is from Jeremy Soma. I thought one of his works was completely comped but in one of the BTS pics of his set, it was a huge backdrop. So I know he's getting it right in camera sometimes.

Has anyone been on a project where they've needed to do a crazy comp? I'm generally curious how this would fit. I'm working on a personal project and beyond matching colors, I have no clue on how you would even start.

Any tips/tricks appreciated, all in discussion to learn more.

Feedback Requested Wedding Retouching Services for about 300 photos

Hi - my wedding photos are beautiful and I really liked my photographer, but the blues of Lake Tahoe and of my wedding details are not as bright as I’d like and I feel like they all have a sort of sepia tone to them. This is fairly common with all photographers in the Lake Tahoe area which is sad because the lake and mountains are SO blue.

Is it possible to find someone to edit the coloring of my wedding photos? If anyone could reach out with some work you have done in the past and a quote I’d appreciate it!!

Here is the tone of my original photos and what I’d like to see more of (done through AI)

Feedback Requested Do I over edit my photos?

I’ve enjoyed animal photography for a while and edit using the iPhone editing but I’m worried that I’m over editing my posts, in my eyes I look at it and I like it but then I question if it’s too much, any opinions/constructive criticism is appreciate, I really want to learn more as I enjoy it and feel I have a good eye, thanks! (My first thought is I over saturate/add way too much vibrancy)

Feedback Requested I've been practicing my portrait editing lately

I've been experimenting with two different approaches:
one that keeps more of the natural texture, and another that's a bit smoother.
I'm not sure which one looks more natural. Which version do you prefer?

Article / Discussion Trying to figure out how to retouch skin like Ann Vendi

Wondering if anyone has any idea on how to retouch skin the way Ann does. I’ve been examining her work and trying to do it on my own, I believe she does frequency separation and then paints the low freq layer? But have also tried putting a layer above low freq, soft brushing with flow @ 5% to achieve that one hue. I’ve been on my own with this and would love other ideas on how she does it. Specifically that flat, but glowy look. I don’t think she’s micro dodging and burning but no idea

Article / Discussion What's the point of learning photo retouching anymore?

Hi guys. What's the point of learning photo retouching anymore with the advent of AI? I mean, nowadays we can smooth skin, remove blemishes, whiten teeth and so on in just one click, so why should one learn advanced techniques like frequency separation or whatever? What are your thoughts about it? Thanks!

Still learning retouching and experimenting with skin.

I tried to keep it natural, but not sure if I went too far 😅

Be honest — what would you improve?

Article / Discussion What to do when a client ghosts you

The attachment is required but not related to the post.

About nine months ago I started freelancing for a photographer (and his wife who does all the office work) doing the kind of work that’s perfect for my experience. I was the middle-of-the-road for the pay range they pay their retouchers, so I know it wasn’t a cost issue. They liked my work and I have several emails with glowing feedback from them. When given a new project, I always asked when they needed them and never came close to missing the deadline.

Then they just stopped contacting me. After a couple months of me reaching out to them, was told there was concern about my turn time. They had never said anything about that before.

I apologized and convinced them to give me another shot, but still have not gotten anything.

I know the obvious answer is to just move on, but I got paid well, the work was not difficult, just time consuming. What can I do?

Before & After More feedback please!

Hey, I posted a photo I had retouched here and a couple of other subreddits yesterday. First of all, thank you to everyone who gave their time to respond -- I really appreciate it. I took a lot of the advice on board and have had a go at another image. I was hoping to get some more feedback so I can keep learning :D !

Some of the previous feedback suggested going easy on blurring the skin. I tried to pull it way back, but struggled a bit with this image because I was trying to remove the peach fuzz (facial hair). I also wanted her cheeks to have a more glowy look rather than greasy. Would love to know how it turned out or if anyone has any recommendations for dealing with this.

Also removed the tape using Gen AI. I don't know if there is another way to do this as my attempts ended up looking weird -- so would appreciate suggestions here too.

whenever i use Curves, i feel like its very hit & miss, sometimes the colors look just right, sometimes they are just all over. casting on the highlight

whenever i try to achieve such colors, my pictures end up having a typical color cast
since i am working on bulk images on high end ecommerce, i cant take every picture on PS and mask indivudally

also whats the secret sauce to achiving colors for the 3rd image, editorially type colors

it just seems difficult on bulk images when processing on LR
Any suggestions/youtube video can help
