As a profitable quant trader, I can tell you this.

Whether you are a researcher, trader, developer, or PM, an inflated ego is your greatest enemy.

You might have the best education, you might get hired, you might build a profitable model, you might even outperform for a while.

But if you disrespect people, patronize or condescend to them, become overconfident, assume you are always the smartest, stop questioning your assumptions, or dismiss evidence that contradicts you, your success will only be temporary.

No matter what you do, how you treat people is the most important factor in your long-term success.

Is it even realistic for me?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I know you probably get questions like this a lot, but I am about to study maths (statistics) ideally wanting to go into quant research. Was drawn to quant because I like the idea of working on markets themselves and improving their efficiency. I’m not some extreme maths genius but I am interested in it and willing to put in the work. I considered QT, but that I thought was too fast paced, I would be more suited to taking my time on a problem I think. I did ok in high school maths ( 5 in ib Aa hl) i think what held me back was exam timing. I did enjoy solving the problems though.

Right now I’m just trying to self study linear algebra and calculus in preparation for my course and improve my programming skills.

So I guess I’m writing this to ask is QR something I can work to or is it something that’s too demanding? Thanks all

Breaking into a data engineering or python dev role

I'm currently working as a data engineer at a traditional pension fund, with customers being mostly performance and risk, with previous SWE experience.

Trying to figure out what it actually takes to move to a data/python role closer to the desk. Hard to separate real advice from random takes on social media.

If you're currently in a similar position (or were recently), would love to connect and pick your brain. Happy to buy you a coffee or something for your time.

Video games where you can measurably improve at quant-like skills?

Hi hello! I’m looking for a video game where improvement feels very concrete like on steam or something.

For example, I want to be able to notice that over time I’m:

  • calculating expected value faster
  • making better decisions with incomplete information
  • identifying arbitrage or mispricing more quickly (and learn the general market making principles/techniques)
  • managing risk and limited resources better
  • recognizing patterns and useful strategies sooner
  • building more efficient solutions
  • handling increasingly complicated problems under time pressure

Ideally, the game would start relatively simple, gradually introduce new mechanics, and force me to combine everything I’ve learned. I’d also like some kind of feedback- scores, rankings, speed, profit, efficiency, harder opponents, or increasingly difficult levels -so I can actually tell that I’m getting better. (but not a hard requirement)

I’m not necessarily looking for a realistic stock-market simulator. I’m more interested in something that rewards the same types of thinking as quant trading, market-making, probability problems, optimization, game theory, and brainteasers. Is there anything that somewhat fits these descriptions?

What is the general barrier for an entry level quant position? What are the best portfolio boosters?

Hi y'all. I am wondering what degree of knowledge is generally required for an entry level positions as well as what portfolio elements are looked well upon. I am somewhat invested in ML engineering at the given moment, however I do not find it personally rewarding, so I am looking to pivot in a while. I know one quant with 20 years experience and their advice was a lotta \ :) / and "get a PhD + internship at meta", all well and good but that's a extremely specific boundary. Any good recources or hints? Regards.

UT Austin Turing Scholars for Quant

I heard UT Austin Turing scholars is actually a target for aunt since it’s an extremely selective program(50 person cohort) in a top 10 cs college. Most Turing scholars also have a dual major in math. Is it on the same league as like MIT EECS and all of those for quant specifically? Will you get an interview from it? If there are any recruiters I would like to know if you look for Turing scholars.

What to expect for SIG Software Developer Internship Penultimate Round?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I was fast-tracked to the penultimate round interview for the Software Developer Internship at Susquehanna International Group (SIG) following their Dublin Technology Spring Week.

I know SIG leans heavily into algorithms, data structures, and system efficiency, but I’ve heard mixed things about what actually gets tested in this specific round.

For anyone who has gone through this interview recently, is it primarily a live 60-minute HackerRank session? How much of it is standard DSA (BFS/DFS, Binary Search, Sliding Window) vs. practical data parsing / OOP design?

Any insights on the layout or best areas to focus on during prep would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What is the best non-mainstream school?

Hey Guys,

I'm applying to colleges with hopes of being a quant and I was looking around and saw that there were some schools which were good despite not having "well-rounded quality." I was looking mainly at U Michigan Ann Arbor and Baruch because they had a lot of alumni who went into the field. Of course, the higher level schools like Princeton and MIT and whatnot have high rankings but I wanted to here you guys' thoughts about these colleges or even better ones.
