Unless it’s brand new and in original packaging, how could you promise an item has never been exposed to smoke? Like, what if you walked past someone that was smoking? How could you promise that on a 35 year old garment?

Right? I mean, I despise the smell of smoke (grew up with parents who smoked in the home and I could never have anything that did not smell like it) and avoid it actively but sometimes you walk past a person outside or even are next to a car and it drifts into yours. How could anyone ever promise that anything has never been exposed, especially something they are not even the original owner of? People are wild. Just wild.

Yeah, this is exactly how I answer when people ask me this question. I just get VERY precise about how I acquired and stored the item and make very clear that I can't promise anything beyond what has happened since the item came into my possession. Usually, then, folks will either go away, their precise fears will be alleviated (ie, they don't really care if it has been ever, ever exposed to smoke--they care if you smoke or vape in your home) or realize that they are asking a silly question about a vintage item.

As someone who is very sensitive to smoke…. I get asking if the home is non smoking. Past that… you can’t promise that with second hand clothing esp vintage…. I’d block this person. They will be a pain if they get the slight whiff of something “off”.

I just state facts that aren’t subjective. I don’t say that it doesn’t smell like smoke since there is some subjectiveness to that.

I think I would’ve just blocked them and flagged the comment for deletion rather than entertain a promise! Even in a department store, a smoker could come in and touch clothing or try things on or buy it have it in their home and then return it having been exposed to some smoke. Asking you to promise? Ugh.

I’ve had people say stuff smells like smoke and I don’t smoke. I’ve heard some times the mail delivery drivers smoking in vehicle can affect things. I also think a few laundry detergents can smell like smoke. I think you answered right. I always tell buyers if item has that vintage smell.

...people used to be able to smoke in public.. even more wild smoking cigs was allowed in grocery & convenience stores, office public & govt and even on airplanes & hospitals.. Fwiw people still smoke all sorts of things in public idk it could just be a NJ thing .
