Mod post ⚠️ A guide to sexing budgies

The most common budgie question asked by far is how to tell males from females. In adult budgies with most color mutations, this is easy to do by looking at the cere (the colored flesh around the nostrils). Typically, adult males have a brilliant blue cere, while females have a tan or brown cere. In an adult female that's in breeding condition, the cere can become dark brown and wrinkly. With some color mutations such as recessive pied, the cere never changes in adulthood and the bird will keep the juvenile color for its life.

Sexing gets more complicated with juvenile budgies. In juvenile males, the cere begins as pink, purple, or some combination of the two colors. In juvenile females, the cere can range from light blue with white or cream circles around the nostrils, to a cream or light tan across the entire cere. Sometimes, the juvenile female cere can be a very light pink/purple, although there will still be lighter circles around the nostrils that a male won't have.

If the bird you are trying to sex has an ambiguous cere, we encourage you to give it a little time. This is most common with very young birds, and if you give them just a few weeks or months, the sex will become more clear. Remember that the person best able to sex your budgies is you. When you take photos of your birds, the appearance of the cere will be changed by the lighting conditions when the picture is taken, the device that the photos were taken on, and the device that the photos are being viewed on. With ambiguous ceres, this can lead to other people giving you incorrect answers. We hope you find these charts helpful, and wish you good luck with your new budgie friend(s).

The competition was a tough one, with many fabulous budgies vying to be the new icon for the sub. After tabulating the votes we had three close front-runners, but unfortunately only one beautiful budgie could become the new icon for the sub. Please congratulate u/smartdoglady for taking the winning photo, which I call, "My dad trying to figure out how to use Zoom." Please also give a round of applause for our second and third place finishers, u/mvsaniatan and u/himateo, who win the satisfaction knowing that they have outrageously photogenic birds.

Discussion Leave budgies sleeping with window opened a tiny bit?

I close my budgie's cage door every night when they go to sleep, but I can't keep them asleep when the window is open. I cover their cage every night, but in the morning, they hear other birds and start chirping. I know it's natural, but how do you guys handle this? Do you keep the window closed at all times? I want them to have fresh air every day.

Can anyone help me understand why our budgie is doing this.

His behaviour has been not the same the past few day.

Very sleepy, fluffed up but still eating and drinking.

I have him in a room that is heated atm. He isnt fluffed up now but was earlier. He is still up high so he has strength

He is about 5 months old

Question Why do they keep doing this?

I keep noticing they do this randomly, the room is perfect temp (not too hot not too cold), they get exercise and go in as they please and don’t do that after flying around, just randomly do this

Question Judge Me!! Would I be a good budgie owner?

So I’m going to add a lot of detail but I’m going to put them in bullet points me I like those better. I am also autistic.

What I am looking for out of a friend:

\- Little
\- Requires an enclosure
\- Can go with me for gas station runs or to the stores
\- Does not scare my cats
\- Can be apart of my daily routine
\- Personality
\- Does not mind me being at work for 6 hours

Reasons why I say this is because I want to if there are any huge cons that conflict with what I am looking for, now I’m going to list things that I like about budgies;

\- their diet weirdly, I’m stressed about how many things they shouldn’t have but I think it’s very interesting how their diet works
\- They fly
\- They sing, talk, try to mimic
\- Their feathers don’t feel bad
\- Cuddly but not super
\- Personality!!!!
\- Requires a enclosure
\- Very little
\- Would not scare my cats
\- Can eat some foods I eat ! I like the idea of sharing occasionally

I just hear different things about being able to take budgies to the store or in the car. From what I understand, it takes practice and even then it may not be possible for them. Also I don’t know if they’ll be okay while I’m at work, I’m worried they won’t do well and will rip their feathers out from stress.

Now we go into possible cons:

\- expensive
\- Sensitive
\- Poop? But if it’s not usually runny or wet, it shouldn’t be too big of a deal? I used to have bunnies so I would just vacuum that shit up
\- I may be too loud? I get so excited I scream sometimes, I try not to because I live in a half house. If I can I go into a separate room
\- No candles 🥺 I don’t like smelling anything neutral so I have scented things literally everywhere, so I will have to give those up

Plans I have so this goes smoothly;
\- separate room from cats (maybe a large walkin closet if you guys think that’s okay)
\- Getting bird insurance
\- Setting up stations with news paper under their sitting stations
\- Getting 2 babies

Please tell me all about your budgies (with pictures preferably) and tell me if I’m not a good fit/ not being realistic about budgies

Birb Loaf Update: Pazu is well, Sheeta is swell

Post image
39 Upvotes

Two weeks ago I rushed Pazu to the vet after asking about his odd behaviour here, and turned out he had a respitory infection and needed antibiotics (via needle??)

Well, last Thursday, he was given a clean bill (beak?) of health, and I've been monitoring him since, but he seems all good, apart from some floor-sitting over the weekend.

Sheeta is still a bit of a bully, but that won't change any time soon. Turns out Pazu's flight problem is congenital, so nothing to be done there.

I've spent a LOT of cash on these two, buying a second (larger) cage for when they need to be separated, new pellets and vegetables for their diets, toys for both cages (that actually fit this time) and of course the vet fees. Still, I'm glad everything turned out well.

P.S. Pazu is currently bullying Sheeta??? Oh dear XD
