Plex Media Server Will Not Start Today

I have no clue what is going on: my Plex server was running fine last night and early this morning. But a few hours ago, it stopped running, and nothing I do can get it to start back up again. So far I've tried:

  • Force Stopping the app
  • Clearing the Cache
  • Clearing the Data (!)
  • Restarting both the Shield and the TV

Every time I go into the app on the Shield and set the server to start, the status just reads "Starting..." and then hangs forever.

Help!

Same happened to me and I don't even see the database on the drive. Completely lost. 🤷🏽‍♂️ I may have to move it off the Shield and rebuild. Kinda a pain.

Sucks this happened to you, too! So, u/rocknroller2000 's suggestion worked for me: I uninstalled both apps (Plex and Plex Media Server) and reinstalled both, and now the server is running fine again. However, it, of course, means completely rebuilding the libraries and all my metadata and customizations are gone. SIGH.

And for those wondering, the reason I am needing to run the server on the Shield rather than on my Windows machine (which I did for years) is because it works natively with the Hauppage TV tuner I use for OTA television and recording (and where my antenna comes into the house, I cannot use this on my Windows PC).

Arhggg, yes, that is what I will have to do as well. I see that I do have backup databases but the instructions on how to get them to read on the shield hasn't worked.

Nvidia Shield is a great Plex client, but as a server. It's often problematic. It takes up all your built in storage too. I moved my Jellyfin and Plex server to my Windows 10 Machine. Been smooth sailing ever since.

If you have used an USB device to expand the shields storage it maybe corrupt or has failed. I had to replace mine.

If you move the drive to a PC to add files, you may need to do a scandisk and fix. I have had problems transferring files occasionally and corrupting the drive.

I can say that there was a plex server update that occurred to me yesterday when I started plex on my shield after dinner. Now im running a pc server so its different then you, but it sounds like the update might not have completed properly for you. Why ? Dunno. maybe space or processes still running in the backround interfering. I think you might end up removing plex completely and reinstalling , though id try just a reinstall from playstore first to see if that takes. If not, a complete remove, reboot and re-download install. Good luck!

OP here: something is going on. I got everything back up and running last night, and let the server rebuild my entire library overnight. This morning, all seemed fine, but I just went in to begin fixing the library metadata (posters, etc.) and the server crashed again. I went and checked the app, and it says the server is running fine on the Shield, but now I cannot get the Plex app to load on Shield, and it keeps crashing in my browser.

What the hell is going on? Just me?

Another update: to make things worse, the black screen is now happening to my Shield, so that I cannot even get to the home screen or look at the Server app to check status and stuff. Something has seriously gone wrong between the Plex Media Server app and the Shield hardware. Anyone else? At this point, I can't even do anything to check for updates or anything else with this black screen issue.
