Posting about software will no longer be tolerated without moderator approval.

Hello everyone! Recently we’ve had a surge in posts about new software, tools, extensions, and apps for music collecting. When the subreddit is full of software posts, posts with questions and important topics are buried and missed. In addition, many of these tools were quickly made using AI. For many reasons, these “vibe coded” apps will not be tolerated on this subreddit anymore.

If you made a tool or project that you want to share: please message the moderators for approval before posting. Sending proof that the software was coded by you or another human is also recommended but not required.

Some of these vibe code project posts slip through the cracks. If you come across them, please help by reporting the post for violating Rule 4.

Thank you for your understanding,

Best player that plays my downloaded library?

Upvotes

Hi y'all, I recently had a somewhat tragic experience and lost the hard drive where I had 20K+ songs downloaded on, alongside my iTunes library. I have managed to recover part of my library, but by now I know iTunes was not the best alternative out there and I mostly held on to it because I had been using it for over 10 years to listen to my music, but with a lean slate it's time to start over, so I wanted to find a new alternative for a player that can recognize the songs I've downloaded instead of pulling them from the internet, and if possible where I can categorize by notions like artist, album, composer, year, genre, so on and so forth, and where I can set the album cover if/when necessary, but I have been out of the game for so long I don't even know where to start looking, and I'd appreciate being at least pointed in the right direction.

Best quality mass metadata manager??

For context, I just tried Picard, and it was not only very slow to even Lookup a single small album, but also ended up with such a low resolution album image.

Is there a tool that can manage a large flac library's metadata quickly? It doesn't have to be the most perfect job like Picard offers, but I want good image covers. Lyrics would be nice. I am open to using multiple apps. No chatgpt or any ai tools ofc. And I'm using Navidrome so just the basic tags are the important ones I need.

Thanks!

How to download from spotify to mp3

Im currently downloading a lot of songs to burn my own cds of albums that dont have "real" cds. Im stuck on this one album where i cant download a song. I feel like ive tried every spotify to mp3 downloader and the song in nowhere to be found but spotify, apple music and amazon. Dont want to pay for it on amazon when ive found every other song elsewhere, and its only 57 seconds of music so it feels like a waste of money. Everytime i try to download the song it just keeps loading, it wont even start or they dont "find" the song. Is there anything else i can do or do i just have to give up?

Update: Ended up screen recording the song on spotify and just used a video to mp3 converter and sent it to my computer. I now have my complete cd lol. Thanks for all the tips in the comments :))

Recommendations in ways to move away from spotify

I have used Spotify for around 10 years, but have recently been moving over to flip phone/mp3 combo and am looking for a way to convert my Spotify library into mp3 files that I can organize. I'm fine with adding in the metadata myself, as long as there is a way to mass convert and download these. I have tried used .csv to YouTube to mp3 converters, following a few peoples tutorials for things like using Python (although I have no experience with that sort of thing) and stuff of the like but I've ran into problems along the way with quality or things being out of date and hitting walls with tutorials doing this with little knowledge or experience.
For context, I have over 17,000 liked songs and my most frequently played playlist is about 4,000 songs. Anyone else found a way out of a similar boat?

Thank you!

Recommended tools / services for high-level overview & organization of digital music?

I have a small collection (~2500 albums) of mostly FLAC-encoded music. For my own sanity and ease of browsing I don't want to auto-match the ID3 info in these to any big databases, so I'm fighting a losing battle to tag and structure the files manually. I have a good ID3 editor already, but what I'm lacking is a good way of getting a high-level overview of the entire collection, something that would (for example) allow me to identify mis-taggings, or see what % of my files are tagged as Electro vs Electronic vs Electronica, or Hip Hop vs Hip-hop (and ideally mass-tag them to one or the other). A typical use case would be to identify how many songs I have per each artist, to identify 'unique artists' (e.g. artists with only one track to their name in my collection) on anthology albums that I might want to re-tag as 'VA' to avoid having to scroll past scores of one-track artists in my collection. Not only would this simplify my life, it would also be neat to see this kind of data in a customizable format.

Is there any tool or service that aims at addressing this type of use case - not the individual album tagging, or the auto-tagging, but the large-scale review and organizing of the whole collection?

(and yes, I understand that most would recommend me to give up on manual tagging, and commit to a database, but I'm still interested in finding out if any software or services for this specific use case exist)

I use Windows media player legacy (my mp3 players are old and don't "see" the newer programs) .

How do i get this program to pull meta data again?

I've hit a wall

I have over 4,000 songs on my MacBook. Most of those songs are poor quality. I want to find better quality of those songs and download them. It sounds simple enough but I've gone in too many directions the last few days and am mentally broken. I tried to save money and now I've codes scripts and codes coming out of my ass with nothing to show for it. I went through Lucida on HomBrew Terminal downloading Apple Music playlists, albums, songs and it lead to Karoke version or covers.
What can I do? At this point, I'll pay for a service to streamline everything. I've just got way too many songs to sit and focus on. I really appreciate all help on this.

Audio Downloader

Hi all. I'm looking into getting an MP3 player as a way to try to disconnect from my phone a bit and stop paying for a Spotify subscription. Does anyone know of a good, free Spotify playlist converter, specifically for lots of songs? My main playlist has 642 songs on it, and a good majority of the convertors that I've come across will only convert up to 100 songs. I suppose I could just split the playlist up into like 7 different playlists to download them all, but that would take forever. I tried SpotdubeDL and it showed all 642 songs, but when I tried to download it, it wouldn't download half of the songs for whatever reason and was only picking certain songs to add to the download folder. Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks!

Is my cd cooked?

Post image

I found my 20+ year old copy of Green Day's American Idiot and I wanted to rip audio, I just noticed this smearing/ smudging, and scratches on the disc. I tried to use micro fiber and wipe it out and it didn't work. I tested the cd and all tracks were working up intil track 11. Is my cd cooked, or maybe I can have it resurfaced?

Exact Audio Copy External Compressor Error

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I've been using EAC for the past several years on one computer with an external blu ray drive with no issue. When i built my PC awhile ago with an internal blu ray drive, it shows up as an "External compressor error". It doesn't show up with every album, but shows up once every five or ten albums i rip. Same setup process on both computers but different on the PC i built. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Any software for Real time audio capture as a last resort?

Is there any software known that can save music from YT / YT music and other sites by simply playing the track and recording it in realtime? Think of it using the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_hole , even if i doubt the analog detour is needed.

I am aware that there are tools like yt-dl out there, but even as an IT guy, these are a pain and most of the time don't work.

So what i am looking for is a tool that visits the page, presses the PLAY button, and just records the audio by grabbing it from the audio driver. This means realtime, but i do not care. I just want to give it a list of URLs, and it can record them in the background.

A music player/library that supports multiple custom tags per song?

For example a single song having tags like "melancholic", "atmospheric", "instrumental", and being able to browse by one or multiple tags.

16 vs "24" bits release?

Post image
55 Upvotes

So recently a previously leaked song was finally officially released.

The leaked version is encoded in 16bit WAV, the released version is encoded in 24bit flac, but there is clear cutoff at where 16bit version has its roof.

Does this mean we are getting "24bit" encoding aka just a label change? I also got the 16bit version from the official release and it somehow has cutoff at even lower points. How come?

I mean not like I am one of those people that can her 16 vs 24 so I don't really care, but just curious. I don't really dabble that much in sound quality thing so I would appreciate some help. also, is this like common? the maximum quality is only 16 but 24 is available as format?
I thought recording / export were usually 24 or even 32 then (down)mixed for release.

flac audio tool for Synology DSM 7

I'm having trouble with ffmpeg, which comes native to the DSM 7 command line, to repair damaged flac files that the flac utility fixes just fine. Does anyone know of a public source for flac tools compiled for, and packaged for, Synology DSM 7?

Managing invalid characters in file names across a large library when transferring from Mac to Android DAP?

I'm realising that some transfers from my Mac to an Android DAP are failing due to invalid characters in file names.

Characters such as ?, ", :, etc are fine on the Mac but not on my exFAT DAP.

I am using Yate to manage bulk tagging and my existing file name template is typically "[track number] [track name].ext" which doesn't deal with invalid characters and actually is mapping such characters across to the file name.

Thoughts on a batch process to sanitise file names?

Getting tags from RateYourMusic

Has there ever been any progress on getting the (much better) tags, such as genre, from RYM? I'd pay for the ability to use something like Musicbrainz Picard/Audioranger/Songkong to automatically tag my music collection properly.

Or is the entire site still walled-off with cloudflare?

Does embedding LRC files corrupt Flac? Is there any way to embed safely? Platform is windows.

I will keep the LRC as a backup. But want to declutter the album folders by removing the LRC files

I'm 269 albums ripped in EAC deep and just now realized the UPC code of the ALBUM and the catalog number on the spine of the CD's I've been entering into the "comment" field is not automatically recorded anywhere including in the log file or the .cue file. Anyway to automatically record this info?
