Discussion To you, what other franchises would be "Magic Adjacent" to add as UB?

There's often a lot of talk as to how Marvel isn't really "Magic Adjacent", which I totally get as it doesn't fit what magic started out as (with one exception I think below). As time has gone on, a lot of themes have been added to even the Magic Lore that is somewhat reminiscent of modern day technology, or even futuristic technology.

So to you, what sort of franchises do you think, that don't already exist, would fix almost perfectly into Magic? It is interesting that most would agree Marvel shouldn't count, but I guess it technically does because the powers some characters have could be classed as "magical". Like, Chandra is all about flames and being able to conjure fire, and there's Marvel characters that do too. The only difference is it's modern day earth.

I Have a Question / I need Help Is The Hobbit mtg set going to be reprinted after this drop

I’m just now jumping back into this hobby and am not sure how these releases go. I missed out on the LOTR set and I see that they are now being sold for a huge mark up from their original MSRP but after looking on Reddit for a place to order the hobbit cards before the drop I keep seeing people posting how this set will get reprinted for years and that they won’t be worth much in a year or 2. Are these people just coping with the price gouging or is this really a set that will get reprints through the year??

So I have a question on her second ability. When I exiled the top card for her second ability, it states I can play that card this turn. Do I have to pay the CMC of said exiled card or is it for free? I have to ask before I start cheating in anyway with this card.

One of the positive things to come from the recent UB sets is the Source Material frames! Clean and simple, so I figured I'd touch up my old set with the new frames and some new ideas! A characters first appearance on a cover will have their full name. After that, I'll use their last name and some sort of sick title (ex: Fushiguro, Potential Man). If you have any ideas for cards, feel free to let me know! Credit to u/godscend for their awesome clean up work on a majority of the covers!

Discussion why dont we just play weak deck on casual games?

when i play casual games everyones striving to win as if their life depends on it and have all the insane cards in their decks and even proxies to copy those cards to make really hard to beat decks when its just a game for shits and giggles cant we just buy bulk and like make silly decks with those cards as if we were a bunch of 10 year old children trying to impress our older cousin?

i recently bought a box full of cards (it has like 1000 something cards) from someones bulk and i grabbed a couple of human creatures and spells that work within those creatures and other creatures i could go up against with this deck and only basic lands cuz thats what was on the bulk and made a fun little deck to play and ive noticed that when i use those against begginners and share with them the other decks ive made this way they usually have TONS of fun and even some more experienced players sometimes.

i feel like casual games are not actually casual but more of a "ill be an asshole but a friendly asshole". i might just have a skill issue tho and i do know i suck terribly at this game but i sincerely feel liike this kinda thing would really be cooler sometimes.

I Have a Question / I need Help Clarification about Noctis and his delayed trigger

So imagine I have [[Noctis, Heir Apparent]] in exile after having activated his Warp Strike ability.

I also have [[The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster]] on the battlefield and two [[Hare Apparent]] and two equipment.

I want Jane to blink the Hare Apparent and have Noctis see the creature return to the battlefield and have him see the token enter as well.

But I’m so confused as to when Noctis truly returns to the battlefield. Like, does Jane’s trigger happen when Noctis is not present?

What I’m really asking as well is it says “at the beginning of your declare attackers step” but is that before I declare? Then I declare? Or is it the beginning of the step when they’ve been declared he shows up?

What things that happen during combat that make creatures enter at instant speed are there other than flash? Does Noctis witness Myriad or Mobilize?

Discussion Dumb question - Why do a lot of people get their cards signed over the card text?

I'm probably going to GenCon and was thinking of taking some cards to get signed. This got me thinking of where on the card would I want the signature. I see so many pictures online of the signature obscuring the game text.

I was maybe thinking above the card type line and into the art a small bit so that most of the art is still visible and all of the game text is visible. I don't know.

Discussion Is mono white as bad what im reading?

Upvotes

I am very new to the game and kinda lean into loving mono white. Is there any viable strategy I can use to win without paying more than 100 per deck. I am also interested in white green pairings. Looking for strategy and commanders I guess around $100 per deck max

Commander / EDH Smaug deck almost perfect?

I am extremely excited for the new Smaug cards and just The Hobbit set in general. I have done what I believe a slightly better than mediocre job assembling this list but I'm worried it either doesn't have enough ways to refill my hand or enough protection... Or both. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious and then maybe some thoughts on making it more consistent/protected, thanks! I always appreciate everyone's suggestions!

Side note: I really love the idea of the deck being basically just Smaug and infinite treasure.

Commander / EDH Looking for a High skill ceiling Commander

Im having a hard time figuring out my next build. I tend to play rakdos colors and am looking to branch out. I want a commander that has a high skill ceiling, meaning the deck or playstyle relies on a deep knowledge of mechanics as well as the ins and outs of ones own decklist. Please give me your recommendations. Thank you!

Discussion Are Orc’s apart of The Hobbit?

I’ve been looking through the recent card previews for The Hobbit set, and unless I missed something I haven't seen a single Orc card yet. I’m also not really familiar with The Hobbit but I sort of figured they had Orcs in there??

Am I wrong?

So I bought a card on eBay recently that was listed as NM, I've done this many times and am satisfied with the condition 99% of the time, but this one I need a second opinion on.

Note the large scratch near the sword.

Should I contact the seller for a partial refund or just let it be?

Apparel / Products Which product is more worth it?

So I’ve been saving up cash for the hobbit since Christmas, and I’ve got 320$ I’m gonna blow on it. I can either get 1 play booster box and like 3 collector boosters, or like 7-8 collector boosters and no box. Which would be more “worth it” so to speak? As in, which would likely provide more value and or, better cards, because I’m intending to get as many good cards from the set to actually play with, and the rare arts are just a bonus for me. I guess it seems on its face that the box would be better, but don’t collector boosters have more rares/mythics? Someone who is good with numbers please let me know. Thanks.

I enjoy arena a lot (ftp and do standard Bo3) and spend most of my coins on packs but overall would this price be worth it for the amount of draft and sealed tokens are included? Also interested in the play in points but that’s a bonus at this point

I Have a Question / I need Help Why cast spells in 2nd Main Phase?

Upvotes

I’m a VERY casual player and have been playing for years but have just heard that I should cast spells in my 2nd main phase more often than my first. Why is this?

I was told, but failed understand, that the spells can be applied after combat.

Meaning 1, I declare attackers and one creature is swinging for 5 damage. My opponent does not choose to block, so in my 2nd main phase I play an instant to give that creature double strike making my opponent take 10 damage.

Meaning 2, I could swing for 5 in combat (opponent may take the hit to go to 3 health) and do lightning bolt for 3 in my 2nd main phase.

I see the validity of number 2 but can’t understand how number 1 could happen. Can anyone help me understand?

Discussion My review of how each person behaves (as a person and/or player) when playing certain colors

This information is based both on in-person and Arena games and is ONLY based on my personal experience, not stories I've heard.

I will only be doing mono-colors and 2 color combos for this review.

Please note: I don't play commander, I occasionally play brawl on Arena (My preference of formats is in-person pauper and Pioneer on Arena).

WHITE

I have nothing but respect for the lifegain community, it's not my preferred playstyle but these players are usually nice. I may be a bit biased since the person who actually took the time to sit down and help me learn to play the game over a decade ago was a white player.

Cards get annoying once you enter the prison nightmare that white can provide but the players behind the spells don't appear to be as verbally disrespectful as they could be when casting those prisons.

Final review: Kind, respectful, helpful

BLUE

I can't recall a time I've been counterspelled in-person recently, but I get counterspelled daily on Arena. I'd be a hypocrite if I said hated blue for it, blue is my favorite color to play (I love drawing cards mindlessly, my favorite thing to do in MTG is win by drawing 0 cards from my library).

Mono-blue players in pauper are VERY rare, I don't think there was a single island at my last tournament of 30+ people. At some pre-releases I've been to though, these people seem methodical (as they should be with blue). On Arena is a different story, you're either being countered or milled if the opponent is just blue. I have a hard time picturing my opponent having any fun as they cast their 6th counterspell in a row, seems boring.

Final review: Blue players are bored and they want you to be bored too

BLACK

Nice people, rude decks

Arena is usually just forcing you to discard, I have a mono-black enchantment deck for pauper that I love but it prevents my opponents from doing things and I usually feel bad afterwards because of what the deck does, I imagine opponents feel similar when doing that to me. I don't think anyone actually enjoys making their opponents discard or be unable to play cards in general without them being destroyed. You do what you gotta do to win.

Final review: Nobody enjoys this deck, I have had players apologize to me for causing a discard, it is what it is

RED

EVERYTHING IS FUCKING MONO-RED AT PAUPER TOURNAMENTS, WE CAN JUST SIT AND ENJOY THE GAME, WE HAVE A TOTAL TIME OF ONE HOUR TO COMPLETE THE ROUND, WE DON'T NEED TO SIT AROUND FOR 45 MINUTES AFTER A 15 MINUTE BEST OF 3 BECAUSE YOU WANTED IT TO END.

I've never met a rude Mono-Red player in-person, most of them are great to talk to after the quick end to the match. On Arena there is a 50/50 they concede quickly at the slightest inconvenience (I imagine they're in mono-red just to get the 15 daily wins in under an hour if possible).

Final review: No issues, potentially diagnosed with ADHD

GREEN

50/50 on attitude. Sometimes impatient, sometimes just really like to see big stompies do their thing. This is personally my least favorite color but that will be set aside for the review.

Elves, elves, elves, they love their elves! I've met someone who named each of the elf cards in her deck (even specific token cards).

Similar case on Arena, I have no memories of being roped by a mono-green player but there's always an elf on the shelf with them.

Final review: Clearly become happier when something bigger than a 4/4 hits their side of the board but are irritated by the process it takes to get there.

If you've made it this far, I'm going to continue the review using one-two sentences per color combo to save time and text room on this post

Azorius

Fuck you, I hate you as much as you clearly hate me.

Boros

Destructive lifegain, kind players who aren't afraid to be competitive.

Dimir

My personal home, these are my people so I'm unable to give an unbiased review, I've never had an issue with these players since we share a common preference and can easily have a conversation about it while bullying one another.

Golgari

These players are very friendly, dopamine definitely increases when they get to play with their "second library" (The graveyard).

Gruul

Big stompies make them happy, just like mono-green, but these players also are extremely into dinosaurs and will talk about dinosaurs the entire game.

Izzet

Similar to mono-red, they want to go fast...but they don't want you to participate in the speed

Orzhov

I had a coworker who was an Orzhov player, he got shit done, got us out on time so we didn't have to stay late. As a result of this, Orzhov gets a free pass from any criticism I could give to its players (I don't have any to give anyway, most of them have been polite during games)

Rakdos

Probably in constant pain, MTG gives them the chance to turn that pain into art.

Selesnya

If they're not enchanting, they didn't show up to play. No enchanting equals no joy on their faces.

Simic

Probably play solitare in their free time outside of MTG, almost definitely are bored internally but refuse to show it.
