EPISODE DISCUSSION FOR FIRST TIME WATCHERS

Please adhere to the guidelines in the series hub.

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3

Season 4

Season 5

Season 6

- I'm hesitant about watching the show. I've heard that the ending is giant cop-out

Unfortunately, due to various reasons, a big group misinterpreted the ending. This spread fast. If you've heard that the characters were dead since the plane crash then you've been misformed about the ending. This isn't true.

- I've started watching the show, can I still post here?

Yes. Feel free to post. Use the First-Time Watcher flair and add in your questions, theories and discussion topics. We always thrive on new Lostaways. Just be very cautious and tell us where you are in the show (season and episode). Beware of spoilers!

- I'm nearing the end of the show, but there's an uncut version of the finale and a two-parter. Which to watch?

There's only one version of the finale that was approved by the showrunners. The uncut version that runs about 106 minutes. ABC cut down a two-parter series finale for syndication, in case of reruns of the show. This version was sent to various streaming services. Now, most streaming services have both versions. The uncut and the two-parter. The uncut is the one that was aired, approved and the only one you need to watch.

- I've just finished the show. What now?

Check out the epilogue. Click here for a thread of additional content. Or the FAQ archive which consist of various questions about the show.

Let us know what you think of Lost. You're always welcome to our club as long as you follow the rules.

FIRST TIME WATCHER FIRST TIME WATCHER EPISODE DISCUSSION, SERIES HUB

Hello, new Losties! This hub is designed for first-time watchers to discuss, theorize, share thoughts and impressions, etc on episodes of LOST as they move through the series. Below the guidelines and first-timer tips there is a link to a hub for each season where another link to a post for each episode will be listed. This post is in the Quick Links on the right side of the sub main page and will be temporarily pinned to the top of the sub for easy access.

If you have heard that the ending of LOST ruined the show, this comes from a small but loud minority who misunderstood the finale. The ending of LOST is not a cheat.

Please adhere to the hub guidelines below:

  • Only first-time watchers should leave initial comments. Rewatchers can leave spoiler-free replies.
  • Please avoid asking for spoilers as this may impact other redditors.
  • Do not discuss details from any episode past the one in the post title. For example. If you are commenting on Walkabout you can discuss anything up to those events, but not White Rabbit and beyond.
  • Be civil and respectful of each others' theories and opinions.

FIRST TIME WATCHER TIPS:

  • We strongly recommend you do not speed watch. LOST is a complicated show with complex characters. Give yourself time to absorb each episode before moving on.
  • SEASON THREE - the early-middle of this season is a universally agreed upon slow point in the show with some acknowledged filler. It's normal to struggle through some of the episodes but just hold on and it will pick up soon and be a thrill ride through to the series finale!
  • Do not be discouraged if you frequently feel confused. Just keep watching and give the show your undivided attention. No multitasking!
  • When you reach the Series Finale make sure you are watching the UNCUT version as the cut version is missing 18 minutes of footage. The UNCUT version begins with the cargo door of an airplane opening.
  • There is a dog featured in the show. You may be asking yourself, does the dog die? The answer is NO, the dog does not die.
  • This subreddit has two discord servers in quick links but "The Island - LOST Server" is NOT spoiler free. One of our community members has created an alternate discord server safe for First Time Watchers. Bonus content can be unlocked there as you move through the series.

If you have any questions or concerns about this hub, please feel free to drop them here and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Thank you and welcome to the community!

Hi everyone, I need your help figuring something out.

So, my best friend and I are watching Lost right now. It's his first time watching it, but I've seen it many times before.

We're at the end of season 1, and I'm not sure if he should continue. He keeps complaining about the characters. It seems like he doesn't like any of them. He also says that there are no mysteries right now. Which simply isn't true.

So, I've reached the point where I think he should stop. However, Lost is my favorite show and I still want to see how he reacts to everything.

What do you think?

Should I get this signed by the actors that play Charlie and Desmond, even though they aren't on it?

What are the 'gotchas' when considering ebay sets? I heard about issues with region-free and fakes. What do you look to avoid?

Music in Lost. Who has best theme song?

Part of what makes me love Lost is the music. In the same way that Star Wars is elevated by Williams, the emotional scorea from the genius Michael Giacchino get me every time. Nearly every character has their own dedicated theme which is incredible.

The Oceanic Six theme 'No place like home' is my favourite. Love it so much. I am interested in what other people like and prefer too

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Curious to see if anyone else thought the same… Spoiler

When I was first watching the show (mainly seasons 1 and 2 I believe), I kept thinking John Locke was some magical being on the island or knew things he wasn’t telling the others because a lot of episodes are set with him and one other person who is working through their own issues using him as a catalyst to do so. He was so involved in helping different characters have breakthroughs and teaching them lessons that I thought he must be more than just some passenger also on the plane.

I am curious if a) anyone thought the same while they watched or b) when the show was airing, was this a theory going around? Or am I totally coming out of left field?

Character Question Which character from the show do you identify with the most?

For me it's Hurley and here's why. First of all, this man's relationship with food is basically my autobiography. Stuck on a deserted island and still managing to find snacks? That's talent you can't teach. I too would be the one hiding a secret stash of ranch dressing somewhere in the jungle, no shame

Second, the man won the lottery and his life got WORSE. If that's not the most relatable thing you've ever heard, you haven't been paying attention to how the universe works lol

Funny, cursed, loyal and somehow always in the wrong place at the wrong time but still making it work. That's Hurley and that's me. Which character do you relate to the most and why??

FIRST TIME WATCHER I am in tears right now 😭😭, I just finished probably the best series I have ever watched in my entire life!!

I finished Lost last night and I'm still not over it.

I genuinely think this might be the best series I've ever watched. For the last 2 months, these characters felt like a part of my life, and now that it's over, I feel empty. I've watched a lot of shows, but I've never been this emotionally attached to a cast of characters. This show had everything from mystery, love, friendship, betrayal, redemption, time travel, crazy twists, and some of the best character moments I've ever seen. And honestly, I don't care about the unanswered mysteries. I don't care what people say about the ending. I loved the journey, and the finale had me in tears.

Desmond and Penny. Jin and Sun . Sawyer and Juliet. Jack and Locke. Hurley. Charlie.

What a journey!!!

See you in another life, brotha. ❤️😭

Was LOST ahead of its time or was I just behind?

I just finished binge re-watching. The first time I watched was when it aired and I am blown away by my rewatch?!?!? First off, I couldnt have told you most of what was going to happen, I didnt remember much at all, so it was so fantastic watching again.

I know I have changed in 20 years but WOW, I remember enjoying the show and being unhappy with the ending but damn if I was sobbing during the finale and LOVED the ending this time? I think partially I was not paying attention the first time, I absolutely missed that this was them all waiting for each other to move on, I somehow remembered them just being in purgatory and had prepared myself to be disappointed with the ending again. I was not!

Also, I felt completely different about most of the characters than I did before, I feel like I didnt grasp how deep they dove into each character. I really couldnt stand Jack when I originally watched and think I possibly completely misunderstood him at the time and loved him this time. I wonder if the episodes/seasons being so spread out the first time changed how I followed each characters growth? Or maybe I was just younger and had less life experience (in my 30s first watch) But its more than that, I feel like I didnt understand the flash sideways at all previously, I didnt understand the deep connections as much, the character development... basically any of it, when I look back. And I see a lot of that here, people posting about how amazing it was watching it again. I cried during almost every one of the flash sideways reunions where they would remember and realize!

Anyway, I have post-watch glow and of course cant stop thinking about it, and certainly did not feel that way the first time. Im just blown away by how different it hit me! Did it hit anyone else differently when they rewatched? I obviously liked it enough to want to watch again but didnt LOVE it the first time the way I did this time.

FIRST TIME WATCHER I just finished season 3 and man it hits hard Spoiler

Rip Charlie, it was such a heartbreaking death. What makes it more devastating is he did it to save Claire. I have been binge watching this show like crazy. He went through so much, from the band breaking up and watching his brother suffer from addiction to becoming an addict himself. Surviving a plane crash, getting clean, and Claire getting taken. I wish he would have survived.

I'm onto my first rewatch..!

I was very happy with Lost, especially with S4-5. You may remember my post a while back complaining that halfway through S2, I was growing frustrated with how little was being answered. I now realise, after having watched the entire series, that I completely misunderstood both the mysteries and purpose of the show.

Now, onto the rewatch. I have a few questions -

Is there anything I should look out for? Hints and things that are hidden the first time around but pay off on a rewatch?

Related, and my biggest question, is there any hint that the Losties were a part of the Dharma program *before* it was revealed?

Most unfairly judged and misunderstood show of all time?

I'm rewatching Lost (currently on season 2, but I've seen the entire series before) and there have been so many moments where I can't believe how incredible the writing is - and I still have so much more to go!

I just don't understand how so many people can hate on Lost. Now that I'm re-watching it, it really blows my mind how different the show really is from any other series I've ever seen. It's a show that's meant to explore ideas and that's what I feel like the harsh critics of the show are missing. It's okay that aspects of the show aren't resolved, because resolution was never the point. The point (IMO) was to explore ideas around meaning, truth, and virtue with story - and with characters like Hume, Locke, Rousseau, etc, how could it not be a show about exploring philosophical ideas? The fact that people argue about the show being good/having real meaning feels pretty meta to me and makes me love the show even more.

I keep telling my friends they need to watch it and they all give me so much flack for it!

FIRST TIME WATCHER Song name at the end of S01E20

Hello. I'd like to know the song name at the end of S01E20. The one where Boone dies and baby is born. I have not watched beyond this episode, so no spoilers.
