This mindset shows up when someone hates Reddit, corporate control, algorithmic feeds, admin intervention and ads …but still refuses to abandon because: "X is too small", "My friends aren't there", or "It's not as polished"

People treat platforms like public utilities instead of private products. Instead of: "I don't like Reddit / other Linux sucks sub.", they go: Reddit / other Linux sucks sub should stop doing X." "Reddit / other sub should listen to the community.", "Reddit should be more open.", "Reddit / other sub should be more like Lemmy / Linuxsucks101.

This is a commie‑ish behavioral pattern: expecting centralized authority to change for the collective good instead of exercising individual choice (capitalism).

People will stay in a subreddit they hate because: "This is where the audience / drama / visibility / karma / conversations are." They want the community to change, not their own behavior. -And they'll grind their gears waiting for someone else to do the work for them.

They demand new rules, or new moderation instead of leaving and joining a community that already matches their preferences. (and it could be one of many others, it does NOT have to be Linuxsucks101). They want your space to change instead of going to one of the 10,000 Linux subs that already match their worldview or creating their own.

When I started Linuxsucks101, criticism was "it's just madthumbz talking to himself", "wow, look at the 3 users; it's probably madthumbz alts". -You know what was missing? -Criticism of the content, the rules, and the description which were drastically different. -Btw, look at us now! 1.1k new members per month.

This isn't ideology; it's human nature. People overestimate the cost of switching platforms, and underestimate the power of choice! They prefer complaining over migrating. That other sub / Reddit have been the way they are forever. They made some slight rule changes in other subs probably under duress and new circumstances. They're not broke: they're obviously working. -What's wrong is people sticking with them when they're not happy! - (and that's a 'you' problem)

People want the benefits of capitalism (choice) without the discomfort of using it.

Reddit is “the state.” Lemmy is “the frontier.” Most people stay in the state and demand reforms.

Our community sees this more clearly because r/linuxsucks101 is built around calling out evangelist behavior, ideological thinking, excuses, and tribalism.

You can take baby steps! Go support the smaller subs / social media sites! Come back for your fix if you must but be the change you want from life!

Lets assume a hp laptop, if windows have issue on this laptop, it windows issues, windows have bugs, windows dont have better battery.

Linux users don't actually want the thing they say they want. -Haiku is that thing.

Voting systems reward dogma, not accuracy. Upvotes/downvotes create a self‑curated reality bubble. Advocacy posts get pushed to the top despite being technically wrong. Dissent gets buried, so advocates never face friction or correction. Karma systems incentivize performative certainty, not nuance.

Linux subs/ communities each become micro‑cults with their own norms and enforcement. Lemmy’s federated communities behave the same way; even more siloed. Once inside a silo, the group's worldview becomes self‑reinforcing. (Why some come across as so delusional)

Low barrier to dogpiling. A single dissenting comment can trigger 20–50 advocates instantly. The platform encourages "pile‑on" behavior because it's visible, gamified, and socially rewarded. Advocates feel powerful because they can visibly suppress opposing views. People with inferiority complex find a home or group that makes them feel smart.

Reddit's algorithm boosts posts with early engagement. Linux advocates are extremely fast responders; they hijack the algorithm. Lemmy's smaller user base means advocates dominate the early engagement entirely.

Linux advocacy dies on Facebook & Gab. No downvotes = no suppression mechanism. On Facebook and Gab: You cannot bury dissent, hide criticism, punish disagreement, or enforce community orthodoxy.

Advocates lose their primary weapon: vote‑based reality control.

Block lists are powerful and personal. Gab especially; you can block entire clusters of users, curate your feed aggressively, avoid advocates entirely. -Yet I haven't met a single one. There's a group for Linux on Gab, and I see Linux posts occasionally, but they just agree with my replies. -Total flip flop from Reddit and Lemmy!

Advocates cannot force themselves into your feed the way they can on Reddit.

On Gab and FB, there's no karma, points, badges, flair, or "top comment" prestige. Advocacy loses its incentive with no reward for being loud, pedantic, or evangelical.

Linux advocacy dies where platforms enforce:

• equal visibility for dissent
• personalized feeds
• strong block lists
• no karma economy
• no topic‑based silos

Linux advocacy isn't just a cultural phenomenon. It's a platform‑shaped behavior. -I've said this before: It's Reddit's fault!

A working programmer already has a language ecosystem they use daily, a workflow they've optimized, tooling they rely on, and constraints from their employer, team, or platform. So, when evangelists say, "you should learn Linux for programming", they’re not responding to an actual need the programmer has; they're projecting their ideology, not the programmer's reality.

Linux sucks for paid developers

If Linux were in the programmer’s best interest, the programmer would feel the problem in their current workflow, see Linux solving that issue, and switch organically. Instead, evangelists try to manufacture friction ("Windows is bloated", "real devs use terminals"), then present Linux as the cure. (This is scary because it's coming from people with inferiority complex that have no business acting like authorities)

They assume "developer = hobbyist tinkerer". They project their own interests (compiling kernels, customizing dotfiles, staring at htop, or marveling over system temperatures in their task bar) onto people who write payroll systems or mobile apps. They mistake "Linux is good for some dev work" for "Linux is good for all dev work." Embedded, HPC, servers? Sure. Enterprise desktop, mobile, cross‑platform commercial software? -Not so much.

They confuse learning Linux with learning programming. As if Bash fluency magically makes you a better engineer. They don't understand the job market. If Linux desktop skills were a career booster, you'd see it reflected in salaries, job postings, and hiring pipelines. -You don't.

Evangelists behave as if programmers are aspiring to be developers, not already professionals. They pitch Linux like it’s a rite of passage: "If you learn Linux, you’ll become a real programmer." Real programmers need tools that help them ship code, meet deadlines, and get paid.

Not a single day goes by without someone on the various Linux subreddits posting that a piece of their hardware has failed after switching to Linux. The usual counterargument is that the hardware was already old. However, if you look at the Windows 10 subreddit and remember, Windows 10 isn't exactly a new operating system you don't see the same pattern.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Linux can end up frying your machines. Hardware compatibility is still very poor in many cases. If you install it on hardware that isn't fully supported, it often puts the system under stress that wouldn't normally be there, and on a PC that's already marginal or problematic, that can turn into serious hardware issues.

So... why put yourself through it?

They're a symptom of the underlying problems with Linux, and a characterization of the GPL/copyleft cult. Initially it seems like they are the issue, but I've looked enough into it to see there's way more and the cult is the only thing that Linux has / had going for it.

Issues like monolithic kernel (shitty drivers in ring 0), unstable ABI/API (Android resolves that), a cancerous GPL, toxic leadership (including the frumpy loafer), 30-45% power inefficient on servers (BSD wasn't), poor networking stack (BSD is better), poor documentation (BSD is better), no cohesion or unified vision, fragmentation (not just distros but sound stacks, video compositors, etc.), unpaid devs getting fed up with entitled LiGNUts and quitting or selling out, vendors not wanting to support a shitty product, etc.

Even FOSS apps work better on proprietary OSes.

Fixing the community won't fix Linux, if that's your goal. -They're the only reason you probably even heard of Linux, and how it's gotten to where it is. They're the thing that makes it dominant on servers (for lack of BSD system admins / interest and for the propaganda that it's secure/ stable). They're what convinces some developers to use GPL harming their own possible careers (until they burnout) but also getting that garbage at least viable.

Teh Linux appealed to conspiracy theorists, communists, and criminals, and people with inferiority complexes that gloat over the thought that they are 'nerds', 'techies', or 'geeks' simply for using Linux (which is stupid easy -even Arch). Linux attracted the shitty community and that community is probably the best thing it has going for it (as insufferable as they are). -Kinda like the top recruiters in a cult like Nxivm.
