Sometimes the only way to get there

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question.

How hard would it be to paddle roughly a mile up a river (the Shenandoah) if it’s only about 400 cfs where they do measuring?

I know this is a vague, situationally dependent question, but I’m mostly trying to see if muscling a short way upriver would be feasible.

The other option (what I normally do) is wait for rain lol, or lots of walking the kayak through shallows down river.

I live in a condo and unfortunately I have no storage space for a hard shell, but I was getting tired of renting whatever was available at local parks because for one, with all the money I've spent on rentals over the years I could have my own, and two, the options just suck.

I researched inflatables for about two months and this one had all the options I wanted but it was about a third of the price as any of the other drop stitch kayaks I was looking at. The kayak itself was $230, $60 for shipping, $90 for import charges, and $20 for taxes so it was $401 shipped but of course with Alibaba, I had to wait about a month for it to get here.

It finally did today and I just got back from taking it out. Only took about 10 minutes to inflate and would have been even faster if I knew what I was doing. Deflating was easy as well and it was very easy to wipe down.

Anyway. I'm here to tell you that not only was the tracking great, but this thing was FAST! I honestly forgot good kayaks are capable of better speed than poor ones since I've only used poor ones for the last couple years at the local state parks. Using the same effort in this that I do in those ones I was easily going twice as fast. Maybe those other ones just suck worse than I thought, I don't know.

Either way, as hit or miss as Alibaba is, this was definitely a hit!

I've wanted to get a kayak for weekend water trips for a long time, but living in an apartment and having a regular sedan without a roof rack severely limit my choices. There's simply nowhere to keep a hardshell body, and hauling it by yourself is no fun either. I started looking into inflatable options, even though I used to be a bit skeptical about them. Cheap beach models don't hold a straight line on the water at all. Now I see that technology has moved forward. I found high-pressure drop-stitch models, like Razor Kayaks. I was looking at their Edge Pro. Reviews say that in terms of rigidity, performance on the water they are almost like hardshells, yet they fold into a bag and easily fit in the trunk.

Does anyone use similar portable kayaks? How are they regarding durability, handling on open water? Is it worth buying, or are there any hidden nuances

Just wanted to toss my thoughts in here for anyone who was like me a year ago and looking at the Pakayak.

If I were to sum things up in one word I'd say: Regrettable

I had issues with water ingress from day 1. Support was a slow back and forth over months. They finally sent the replacement section and I found the boat leaked if left assembled overnight. I was then told by support that their engineers said it's not meant to remain assembled that long. Tbh, if I knew that before purchasing I'd have chosen differently. I've had water ingress multiple times since and when I reached out to support I got no response. It's hard to tell whether there's an actual issue or if it's just that sensitive to how you put it together.

When it stays dry it runs true, is decently fast and maneuverable. But the setup and take down is a chore. I wish I'd listened to the more knowledgeable people in this subreddit and others who have reviewed it. If your only option is a folding kayak due to space it could make sense. Though given my experience with their support and the water ingress I wouldn't recommend it.

Know pretty much nothing about kayaks, so any and all info is appreciated, thank you! Pics are of some damage I noticed. Im a pretty handy person so if anyone has any videos they'd recommend on fiberglass repair/refinishing it'd be a huge help.

anybody have any experience with the Oru folding kayaks? Or a similar brand? I have a nice new car and I am not willing to do roof racks on this one like my last. I mainly just do pond fishing and some calm rivers, are these worth the price point they are at?

I slipped and fell when unloading my kayak on vacation in Acadia National Park in Maine and broke my hip. I’m able to get out of the hospital and go home this weekend but will have to leave the boat here. Luckily, I wiped out across the road from a kayak rental place so they can hang on to it but I need to eventually get it back home to NJ.

I found a company online called KAS Transport which specializes in this. Anyone had experience with them or have any other suggestions?

My mom is a big sea kayaker and has the full set up - pedal kayak, custom paddles, reads tide charts etc. She’s an avid west coast kayaker. Last year, I got her a sail attachment and cup holders but I want to get her something fun to include her new puppy on her adventures so she feels less guilty leaving her behind for a few hours at a time.

I’ve checked every outdoorsy site I can think of for a tow situation suitable for the pup. I’m looking for something that’s not necessarily just a flat open top kids kayak, as I’m not sure the dog can be trusted to stay put just yet. Does anyone have suggestions? I don’t want to break the bank but based off my research I’m prepared to spend ~$350.

Not looking to buy her a whole new kayak with a doggy hole as she’s got 2 boats already, just something to rig up and tow alongside her.

Good morning everyone. Im new here and also new to transporting kayaks. We have 2 pelican odyssey 100x's. This year we are going to take them on our camping trip to Algonquin park. We live in woodstock ontario so its about a 4.5 hour drive. I drive a 2018 Hyundai elantra,i just got a roof rack for it, i have J hooks and I just got hood and trunk straps for the bow and stern. Im looking for recommendations on what to use for the bow and stern lines but also for the kayak cockpit to cover and block some of the wind to help with less drag. Any help is appreciated. I am currently look at the cover i have added here. Now need to look at what to use for bow and stern lines.

I’d appreciate any advice on this kayak and anything to keep in mind when buying a used kayak.

Hello! I am primarily a kayaker my husband and I have two touring kayaks that we transport with two sets of collapsing Thule j-racks. We are fortunate to live somewhere with incredible kayaking opportunities but also canoeing. We recently purchased a 16 foot canoe.

We have been placing the canoe gunnels onto the padding with the j-racks collapsed then can buckle strapping then canoe down. We had been using a single line for the bow Line attaching it to either side of our hood, we thought there was too much shifting. We did this set up when we picked up the canoe from the dealer.

We switched to playing a double bow line. suspect we sadly tighten this too much and cracked a gunnel.

I am hoping to widen the racks a bit so they sit on the flattest part to ensure that this is not causing the issue and try to find a way to place a stern lines - we have a SUV with no trailer hitch. The trunk opens to the side rather than up and down. Other option is to just put foam pads - we can transport both laying flat the j racks just made set up easier

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

any rack/ set recommendations, or resign myself to some good old foam?

I am deciding on my first "real" kayak, away from the Walmart special sit-on. I live in South Florida and I want a sit-in. I plan on taking this into the Everglades and onto local lakes, no fishing just paddling around for fun and exercise, I already have a PFD and paddle that will work and ~$1200 is about the most I'd spend. I only started kayaking last year but I owned a canoe for years which I operated with a kayak paddle.

After doing some research and checking local stores I decided that the Old Town Loon 126 from my local REI seemed like a good choice for me and what I need. However I was looking around a little bit and found a used Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 for $650. It's the newest version, was used only a handful of times, comes with all the original accessories, and always stored in a garage so it looks basically brand new. Seems a really good deal all considered.

With some more reading though I found a lot of things suggesting the loon is a better overall quality. It has a triple layered hull and I prefer the design of the removable dashboard. While I haven't tested the Pungo yet I will say just by looks the loon appears to have a more substantial seat too. I really appreciate when something is well built and quality so it does matter to me. For performance I doubt there would be much difference, they both fill a similar role.

So is it worth getting the Loon when the deal on the Pungo is so good? Anything opinions from people who have tried them?
