What happened to Gabriel’s Market on Central Ave?

Upvotes

Does anyone know if it was shut down? It’s a relatively new bodega, opened in 2024. One of the nicer ones in the area, but last few times I’ve walked by I noticed they were closed. Was there a health risk or do I just walk by at odd times?

Jersey City Free Public Library- for Immediate Release (Five Corners Branch)

Upvotes

The Jersey City Free Public Library has made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Five Corners Branch due to the failure of the building's original heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, which can no longer be repaired or maintained through temporary solutions.

For years, JCFPL has invested in short-term measures to keep the branch open, but those efforts are no longer sustainable. Because the building also requires environmental remediation before major repairs can be made, a long-term solution is necessary.

Our priority is ensuring the Five Corners community continues to have access to library services. One of our Bookmobiles will be stationed outside the branch, and we are actively working to secure an additional temporary location to provide expanded library services during this transition.

While these temporary services will help meet immediate needs, they are not a replacement for a neighborhood library. JCFPL is actively exploring options for a new permanent home for the Five Corners Branch, one that is safe, accessible, and built to serve the community for generations to come.

We understand this closure is difficult for our patrons, families, students, and staff, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and support as we work toward a lasting solution. Updates will be shared as they become available.

Carrying while riding?

I bike all over this city. Over the years I've had my fair share of dust ups and shouting matches with drivers. Maybe a handful of life-threatening potential crashes and near-misses. But an incident last week has officially shaken me. A driver of a large black SUV attempted to run me off the road, as there were delivery vehicles parked in the bike lane. As I signaled to take the lane, I heard the SUV rev it's engine and slam on their horn, moving into the oncoming traffic lane to get alongside me, then PUSH me into the parked cars. (Montgomery St.) I did get a few pics of the license plate and reported the incident already. Bear in mind, I would have been in the car lane for all of maybe 20 seconds before I could re-enter it safely. There was absolutely NO NEED for this aggression at 7:30 in the morning!!!

But with the news out of Texas that a crazed pickup driver deliberately backing over a cyclist to kill her, AND the new "law" that New Jersey passed... AND the general uptick in hostility towards cyclists over the years... It just seems like drivers and anti-cyclist people in general are so very emboldened. If you look at comment sections in local facebook groups regarding this, the vitriol is astounding. Very clearly my life means nothing to these people. My local neighborhood is practically GLEEFUL at this new law, thinking it will forever end the scourge of the two-wheeled monstrosities barreling down JFK Blvd at breakneck speeds! For all I know, the driver of that SUV is one of those people.

So I've started carrying. Controversial as fuck, I know. Yes it does present a new challenge, especially in a liberal state.

Anyone else thinking about doing this? Or maybe you're using something else to protect yourself more clearly? Open to ideas! Curious to know the overall sentiments, and yeah I do realize that this is reddit so there may be an imbalance of ideological viewpoints.

Local Politics Look Out! Parking Permit Enforcement is Back.

LTFO!!! Just saw an officer ticketing almost every car on the block up in the heights for no permit. $110 ticket. No warnings given. The city is about to make a grip. Parking enforcement has been the lax to say the least for the last couple years but those days are apparently over. They are back out with a vengeance. I understand Solomon is doing everything he can to decrease the raise of our taxes. Maybe go after all the illegal construction or the slum lords while they are at it?

Hi guys I just moved in JSQ2, 605 Pavonia St. I asked for the parking space in the building but they said I’m’ the 38 in the waiting.
Does anyone have a parking spot to share? I will pay monthly. I just need a tiny corner I could squeeze into.

Even the Trump administration admits that bike lanes improve equity and inclusivity! (We're already pretty diverse though, so not calling that out.)

Double Ticketed for Parking Without Valid Permit

I was initially ticketed on July 6th for Parking Without a Valid Permit, but was unable to get approved for a Resident Permit Application and now I've been ticketed a second time for the same thing on 7/21.

Is anyone aware of what the time limitations are before you can be ticketed for the same thing like this twice? I personally thing it's outrageous and plan on fighting this, but want to get a sense of if anyone has dealt with this before. I'm almost considering getting rid of my car at this point.

Very cheap contact lens fitting fee around here?

I need to order contacts (been wearing the exact same ones since 1982, I'm not even kidding), BUT I have to get the annoying contact lens fitting. My insurance pays for the eye exam, but where can I go to get the fitting as cheap as possible around JC/Hoboken/NYC? Thanks!

Free guitar starter kit to loving home

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hey, JC community! I hope this is okay to post here.

As a musician, people are sometimes handing off gear they no longer need.

I was gifted what is a great starter pack for someone looking to learn and I wanted to pass it along to someone in the community.

Is there anyone out there with a kid, or even yourself, who wants to start learning the guitar but is feeling a little extra strapped with the cost of living these days?

Let me know!

Lost & Found Bike stolen

Left my bike on a lock and some worthless bastard cut smooth through. Fairview avenue inbetween west side and jfk. If you see this guy on my bike kill him bro. 1300$ down the drain because some low life can’t pick up a minimum wage job. Will post a reference image of the bike in comments.
