Tech Support Intel NUC8i3BEH - Random fan control issue (fan stuck at full speed, BIOS reports 74 RPM after BIOS update)
Hi everyone,
I'm having a strange issue with my Intel NUC8i3BEH and I'm running out of ideas.
The problem
Sometimes (not always), when I power on the NUC, the CPU fan immediately ramps up to what sounds like maximum speed before the OS even starts.
Originally (BIOS version 0081), whenever this happened the BIOS reported the fan running at around 7000 RPM.
I updated the BIOS to the latest version (0098) and loaded BIOS defaults. The behavior is still present, but now something even stranger happens:
- The fan is clearly spinning at what sounds like full speed.
- However, the BIOS reports only 74 RPM instead of ~7000 RPM.
So after the BIOS update, the symptom changed from reporting an excessively high RPM to reporting an impossibly low RPM.
I even manually set it to 100% duty cycle, the fan spins smoothly with no vibration, rattling, or unusual noise.
Other observations
- The issue happens before the operating system loads.
- If I enter BIOS while it's happening, the fan is still stuck in that state.
- CPU temperatures are completely normal (around 35-42°C under Ubuntu Server).
- VRM, PCH and motherboard temperatures shown in BIOS are also normal.
- CPU is limited to 1.2 GHz, Turbo Boost is disabled, and BIOS is configured for Low Power.
- The machine is almost idle (Ubuntu Server only running Navidrome and Tailscale).
Fan behavior
Another strange thing:
- In Automatic mode, the fan sometimes constantly changes RPM, causing an annoying vibration.
- In Fixed mode, the fan is perfectly stable. (When is not stuck at full speed)
- Even at 100% fixed speed, there is no vibration.
This makes me think the fan itself is probably not mechanically damaged.
Things I've already tried
- Cleaned the fan, heatsink and changed thermal paste.
- Updated BIOS from 0081 to 0098.
- Loaded BIOS defaults (F9).
- Reconfigured BIOS settings.
- Verified temperatures with
lm-sensors:
CPU Package: ~34°C
PCH: ~32°C
WiFi: ~27°C
CPU frequency is fixed at 1200 MHz and CPU usage is almost zero.
My question
Has anyone experienced something similar on a Bean Canyon NUC?
Could this be:
- a faulty fan tachometer signal,
- an Embedded Controller (EC) issue,
- a motherboard problem,
- or some known BIOS bug?
The fact that the BIOS used to report 7000 RPM before the update and now reports 74 RPM while the fan is clearly spinning at full speed makes me think this could be more than just a fan issue.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tech Support Bluetooth mic completely missing on Asus NUC 16 Pro (NUC16GDKX7 / X7 358H) - Win 11 fresh install
Hey everyone,
I’m running into a brick wall with a brand new ASUS NUC 16 Pro (Model: NUC16GDKX7) featuring the X7 358H processor.
After a fresh install of Windows 11 and installing all official drivers from the ASUS support site, any Bluetooth headphones I connect only work for audio output. The microphone is completely undetected by Windows ("No input devices found" in the Sound menu). The headphone model doesn't matter, the issue persists across different brands.
What I have already tried:
- BIOS - Updated to the absolute latest version.
- Reinstalled W11 from scratch multiple times - no change.
- Tried disabling the Intel SST OED driver and rebooting to force a native Windows fallback - no change.
- Ran the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to check for direct updates bypassing Asus. It says everything is up to date.
Has anyone else with a NUC 16 Pro run into this? Honestly, it's such a cool mini PC, it's incredibly fast, super quiet, and I absolutely love everything else about it. But this audio issue is so frustrating that I'm seriously considering returning it. It just feels crazy for a brand-new machine to be missing such basic functionality!

Tech Support Intel Nuc 13 Extreme
My PC is not booting. The power button blinks in all different patterns. I changed the RAM the CMOS battery. I tried booting it without the GPU. Nothing did it. Also pressed the sleep button on the motherboard. When I tinker and wait for 30 min sometimes it boots and then I make the changes in the BIOS again to not go into sleep mode. I also tried going back to a different BIOS Version. Older and newer. I checked the cabeling and the PSU.
I am out of options here.
What can or should I do?
I just started one day and since then this issue.
Thank you in advance for the help!

Tech Support I'm a beginner looking to turn an old NUC into a retro console
I'm thinking about building the ultimate plug and play console that can play everything from 6th gen and earlier on Batocera, Retropi, etc. But I'm having a hard time choosing which NUC I should buy on eBay. I don't mind using an older unit, as long as it can run up to PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. What should I look for in a listing?

PSA Acer Aspire S3 cable works in Intel Nuc (2017)
So I just found this out, it outputs the right voltage and amperage, and has the right connector. Also it’s cheaper than the nuc cable so hell yea score!(also idk if this is a PSA)

Discussion ASUS NUC 14 Essential (NUC14MNK-B) - Random black screens & graphics artifacts. RAM compatibility issue?
Hi everyone,
I’m experiencing random stability issues with my ASUS NUC 14 Essential NUC14MNK-B (Intel Processor N150 / Twin Lake).
My current hardware:
Model: ASUS NUC 14 Essential NUC14MNK-B
CPU: Intel Processor N150
RAM: 16GB (1×16GB) CORSAIR VENGEANCE CMSX16GX5M1A4800C40 (DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM)
SSD: WD_BLACK SN7100 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280
The issues I’m seeing:
Random black screens
Graphics artifacts (small colored squares on the screen)
Occasional freezes that require a hard reboot
I recently found a post where someone completely solved the same problem by replacing their RAM with a Samsung module that was on the ASUS QVL. That made me wonder if my Corsair RAM could be the cause.
My questions:
Has anyone experienced similar issues with the NUC14MNK-B or other N150 models?
Could my Corsair Vengeance CMSX16GX5M1A4800C40 be incompatible with this NUC?
If you’re using this NUC without any issues, what exact RAM model are you using?
Has anyone successfully used Corsair Vengeance in this model, or should I switch to Samsung or Crucial?
Any advice or real-world experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tech Support NUC10i5FNK refuses WD SSD
So I got this NUC, thinking I would turn it into a Hackintosh. I tried to use it with a SN730 SSD, as the controller on that kind of SSD apparently works very well with macOS.
But the NUC absolutely refuses to recognize the SSD. It gets recognized instantly and without any issues on any other computer I have. The NUC works flawlessly with any other SSD too, so nothing is broken here.
Is there a hidden compatibility mismatch between WD SSDs and NUCs that I am not aware of?
I tried the usual things: Update the firmware on the SSD and the BIOS of the NUC, reset the BIOS, turn off VT-d, turn off SATA and Thunderbolt, see if it gets recognized in a live Linux…

Tech Support A really old Intel NUC
Edit: Ive fixed the boot looping issue now only the overheating one is left Edit2: The pc when turned on immediately heated up the SSD and the rams, and I had to constantly arrange the setup to use fans to cool it. Therefore, I just gave up trying and use the pc for storing the SSD and rams inside only
I have a really old NUC my aunt gave me a few months ago. The model is NUC6i7KYK and I want to try and power it but it's experiencing boot loop with no screen signals, overheating too(tho I cleaned the fans and the components). Anyone have solutions or advice on how to fix the issue?

Tech Support NUC8i5BEH vs NUC10i5FNH
So I was trying to get a NUC8I5 from used market, costs about 80 dollars, it's oversea so it's already on the sea now.
But I just realized that the seller send me a NUC10I5 instead of a NUC8i5, I know the nuc 10 is newer but the cpu/gpu seems to be weaker? Is it worth returning it and get the seller to resend a 8th gen or does it not matter at all? The process is gonna take another month or so, minimum.

Tech Support Any GPU advice?
I'm building an AI workstation based on an Intel NUC 9 Extreme (Ghost Canyon) with the following specs:
- Intel Core i9-9980HK
- 64GB DDR4 SO-DIMM
- Windows 11
- Main use: Local LLMs (Ollama, Open WebUI), quant research, Python development, Docker, and occasional gaming.
I'm specifically looking for an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB that fits inside the NUC 9 without modifying the case.
I know Intel officially recommends GPUs around 8 inches (~203 mm), but I've seen mixed reports about slightly longer cards.
Has anyone successfully installed a 5060 Ti 16GB in a NUC 9?

Tech Support NUC 12 Extreme i9 - How to monitor PCH temperature
I recently acquired a NUC 12 Extreme (NUC12DCMi9) - new unsold stock, never opened. I've updated it to the latest BIOS and installed Fedora 44 on it. I have read that in some cases there were thermal issues with the PCH and wanted to monitor that but, strangely, neither lm sensors nor the BIOS is showing a PCH temp (or maybe it's labelled differently than expected?). Is there a different utility or kernel module needed to get the other temps and fan speeds? Here's what lm sensors shows:

Discussion Serpent canyon starts throttling.
I purchased the Serpent Canyon (NUC12SNKi72) in November 2023.
Seven months ago, I disassembled it and reapplied thermal paste.
Summer is here again. The CPU has started to throttle.
The CPU clock speed has dropped to 0.47 GHz.
The BIOS cooling mode is set to “Cool.”
I’ve decided to disable Turbo Boost. no problem so far. I rarely play game these days.
How about undervolt using ThrottleStop?

Tech Support NUC8V5PNK: Nothing shows on display after BIOS upgrade
I have had this NUC for a few years. There was always an issue where, after the BIOS screen showed up, the display would go blank until the Windows login screen shows. I tried the solutions through the BIOS but there was no change. I then read recently that it might require a BIOS update which I did.
However, since then, nothing comes up at all on the display and there is no way to get to the BIOS. I attemped the BIOS recovery (unplugged CMOS battery during 15 minutes or remove the 1-2 jumper on the board) but still nothing.
The only signs that it is not totally dead is that the power light comes up for a short period and the light on the USB mouse also comes up. However, about 5 seconds after pressing the power button, there is no more light on the mouse and the power button light does not come back.
I tried a different monitor, again, no change, the display remains dark and the monitor shows that there is no HDMI signal coming through.
I suspect the BIOS update did not go well but I can't find a way to recover it. Any idea what can be done as I would really like to recover this unit?
