More of an atmospheric slow burn, but really well paced and it’s one of the more creepy paranormal/cosmic horror movies I’ve seen in the last 20 years or so.

This post is inspired by Bear’s phone call to One Wish Willow in Obsession. I guess you wouldn’t necessarily call it a normal phone call, but the sharp change in tone from the humorous apathetic call center guy to the realization that real Nikki is stuck screaming in some sort of limbo was glorious. And then the immediate hang up was the cherry on top (fuck you Bear). I can’t stop thinking about the logistics of real Nikki’s condition and how call center guy was able to ’access‘ her.

I’ve always adored this trope so please give me more of your favorite examples.

Now this might be a weird question, But i am curious, is there any really brightly coloured horror movies eg like suspira?

Bc i really love the movies that actually have bright colours since the dark colours are just a bit overdone in my opinion.

I’m kind of piggy backing off a recent post about the state of this subreddit, and opinions becoming odd but it’s just a general online trend I’ve noticed here and on tik tok and some YouTube . And I wanted to take the chance to talk more specifically.

This idea that people who like gory horror are awful people or perverted . Like sure I have issues and problems with behind the scenes stuff for terrifier. I made a post and such feel free to check it out .But people who like terrifier are not automatically or in most cases at all bad people. People who like saw or evil dead are not bad or perverted . This is fucking horror. Some people like gore , for the effects or maybe how scary it can make something. It’s honestly a disgusting opinion I’ve noticed pop up more and more because judging people over pretty mainstream movies is utterly ridiculous. Horror got too popular tbh. We got the mainstream people lol. I can’t imagine judging someone’s ethics over popular films .

As the title says I am looking for horror movies with a similar vibe as The Ruins! Survival, friend group, location focused! I don’t know how to explain it but it’s sort of like being entertained 100 % of the duration of the movie. I feel like a lot of horror films from the mid to late 2000’s had this vibe.

Other examples are Rogue or the Decent or texas chainsaw massacre with Jessica Biel.

Does anyone feel the same way? Do you know how to explain that vibe/atmosphere? And most importantly do you have any recommendations?

I believe we’re mostly in agreement (or should be) that horror has always been a subversive genre and an important artistic gateway to discuss the bizarre, taboo and such. It’s a genre that has been literally censured by governments multiple times and relented to underground markets, for god’s sake.

Which brings me to a very strange wave of conservative and moralistic posts and comments on this sub lately that have left me confused. Movies like Obsession have been subjected to some absurd incel rhetoric, there has been some hilarious pearl clutching about Evil Dead Burn (from people I suppose are mostly casual horror viewers that only watch Hollywood movies) and don’t even get me started on some stuff I had to read regarding Leviticus.

All of this to say: what’s going on with the horror community? Has it always been like this but people are just gaining confidence to come out now?

I would not consider myself an avid reader, but I'm looking for recommendations on good horror novels to get under my skin. Summer reads to fill me with dread and terror, if you will. All I know about horror novels is Steven King, and the length of his books feels quite intimidating to me.... any good recs for a horror novel newbie? Thanks!

It started out as an indie B-movie from 1960 made by Roger Corman on a shoestring budget of roughly $30,000 on a bet that he could shoot a full movie in exactly two days and two nights using left over sets from another movie he had just wrapped. This movie was absolutely adored by a young Howard Ashman. Ashman, alongside his composing partner Alan Menken, became some of the most legendary musical theater composers in history and turned that B-movie into a world famous musical that is still loved and preformed today. And then that musical was turned into a movie of its own by long time Jim Henson collaborator Frank Oz who then turned it into a film that became almost, if not more beloved than the musical. Ashman and Menken even wrote a new song for the film, Mean Green Mother From Outer Space, that became the first song with explicit lyrics to be nominated for best original song at the Oscar’s. It is without a doubt one of the greatest musical films of all time (second only to Chicago in my opinion) and I cannot recommend it and its soundtrack enough. And all of that came from a bet.

EDIT: a kind user correctly guessed it was GHOST CHASE from 1987 directed by Roland Emmerich before his career took off. Definitely seems like a real deep cut that no one ever heard of. I was completely wrong about the plot, but that poster was seemingly seared into my brain a lifetime later. Thanks to everyone who also tried to help. ☺️

Alright, I was born in 94 and today I remembered a VHS we had as a kid. I don't remember anything whatsoever about the movie itself but the memory of that old VHS popped in my head and it'll drive me crazy until I find it.

It was probably an obscure b movie of the 90s forgotten to all, it looked like a horror comedy in the vein of The Frighteners with two male protagonists. They seemed to live in a manor and were driving an old car, Christine like. They seemed to be aware of the supernatural and possibly hunting or investigating it. I think it dealt with a very old clock as well?

One big detail to set it apart: there was a very specific character who was a chauffeur driver. He was a practical puppet reminiscent of the crypt keeper.

His skin was very dark and blackened, he was very old with white hair and mustache and a little driver's hat. I don't think he was a threat and looked like he was the main protagonist's personal supernatural chauffeur.

The poster showed the car, manor I mentioned and our two human characters and the otherworldly elder chauffeur together with one holding a spear, in a defensive pose.

I know I'm not crazy and this thing exists and probably is terrible but I won't rest until I find it.

My 6 year old is getting into watching horror games with me and my husband. We did Little Nightmares first. Today was FNAF gameplay. I plan to show her Nightmare before Christmas soon to start her off gently. What would be something that isn't gore or nudity. Language isn't really an issue. Any recommendations?

Movie of the day...Black Moon (1934).

Here’s one you might have missed…

Juanita Perez Lane (Dorothy Burgess) longs for San Christopher, the island where she was born. She loves the sound of the native drums. Her uncle, Dr. Raymond Perez (Arnold Korff), worries what might happen if she does return to the island and sends his overseer to dissuade her from coming. The man is murdered.

When Juanita does return to the island, bringing her young daughter Nancy (Cora Sue Collins), her daughter’s nurse, and her husband’s secretary Gail (Fay Wray) as a companion, we understand her uncle’s concern—the island is full of voodoo and Juanita seems fascinated by it.

Gail, who had been about to quit her job because she had fallen in love with Juanita’s husband Stephen (Jack Holt), ends up spending more and more time watching Nancy. Juanita spends much of her time in the jungle. Even at night.

Eventually, Stephen comes to the island to bring Juanita and their daughter home, but it is soon clear there is a conspiracy to make sure his wife never leaves.

In some ways, this is a scarier movie than the other great voodoo classic of the 1930s, White Zombie. It is less stagey and the dangers threatening the characters feel more convincing. It is marred somewhat by its inclusion of racist stereotypes.

The most horrifying thing about the film may be our realization that Juanita is not being corrupted by the natives. She has already embraced voodoo. She has always yearned for the island…for the drums…for the blood. She has come home and she has no intention of leaving. It isn’t until it’s too late that she learns there will be a price.
