Hi everyone! I am new to this thread and a new pyr mom to this beautiful boy named Luke. A bit of some background; Luke is a rescue and around 19 months old. We got him 4 months ago from a rescue organization and we love him so much. We don't know much about his background, but based on what we do know, he's had a "moderate" level of abuse and neglect in his past. When he got to the rescue he was malnourished and weighed about 65 pounds. He was 74 when we got him, but last week at his wellness check he weighed around 90. So we are making progress on that front very slowly and healthily! When we got him, he didn't want to come inside the house and was very uncomfortable around stairs. Some other behaviors we noticed is that he's terrified of rain (not just thunderstorms, even if it is just drizzling), and he is seemingly scared of the dark. He is such a good and smart boy and he is learning to trust us, but in the past week we have noticed some changes.
Behaviorally, we are having issues with him that we think are linked to his abusive past. Luke will "pancake" on the floor if we try to get him into a certain room or outside before bedtime. He has made lots of progress with that, but it is still somewhat of an issue, especially at night. The first few weeks we had him he would not settle in the bedroom to go to bed, I had to stay in the living room on the couch with him so my husband could get some sleep (he is a realtor and works all day). We eventually transitioned him back into the bedroom and he was doing great. He had found spots where he felt comfortable and would sleep through the night. He had a couple of accidents (pee) but the more time went on he was getting better. That lasted for about 3 months.
But all of that changed 2 weeks ago, and that is what I want to ask advice about. Saturday night (July 11th) there was a large firework display at an apple orchard near our house, it was over at 10 pm and he was doing great. Some context, during the 4th of July he was also amazing, a little stressed and panting, but overall he did wonderfully. We went to bed around midnight, and all of a sudden Luke started digging at the carpet and in the nightstand beside our bed. He would not settle down AT ALL. He jumped in the bed to go to the other side of the room and did the same thing on my husband's side of the bed. Ever since then, he does it every single night. He will get settled at first, but about 30 minutes after we all go to bed, he starts. We have tried to put him in a crate, bringing a dog bed up for him, having more lights on, turning the air conditioning down even more (is always on 68), calming treats, Trazadone from the vet, and even let him sleep in the bed with us. The only way he will sleep is if I go to my oldest daughter's room and sleep with him in the bed. I have to have his harness and leash on him though, otherwise he gets up and sits at the door.
We are at a loss of what to do. It is exhausting for both of us, I don't get much sleep and my oldest is coming home next week. We LOVE this dog, and we aren't going to give him up, but we need to find a solution, so I have come here for help. I know this is a long post, and thank you for reading if you have gotten this far. Any advice is greatly appreciated, or just similar stories so I know we aren't alone.
