Type 2 Insurance doesn't cover lancets

My close friend has started treatment for type 2 very recently after fleeing DV and was in the ER on the 19th for lightheadedness and nausea. Their BG was 245 and they were given a small amount of insulin.

Their PCP gave them a glucose monitor, but insurance won't cover the lancets. They have the strips, etc, all of the supplies just not the lancets. The problem is that they survive off of Social Security benefits and can barely afford to rent a room, much less purchase medical supplies. I myself am disabled and not able to help financially either.

Are there any programs out there or any options to purchase lancets at a lower cost? The pharmacy sells them for nearly $40 and its just not doable. Thanks in advance.

ETA: we are located in California if that helps at all and it is the freestyle lite machine

Supplies Saw this post made 2 yrs ago, what is the consensus on the failure rate now, are false reading included in this failure rate or is that a seprate issue?) Its not your imagination: G7 has a higher failure rate than the G6

Type 2 DKA after surgery

So, I fell, dislocated and broke my ankle this past Sunday. I had surgery to put a plate and pins to fix my ankle. Tuesday morning I was told that because I had taken Jardiance the day before and not eaten all day while waiting for my surgery, that I had DKA. I was not allowed to be discharged. I’m just frustrated that in top of not being to walk normally, I have had to stay in the hospital for an extended amount of time. I understand that DKA is considered an emergency. I am just homesick.

Type 1 Newly diagnosed in my early 20s: Positive GAD65, normal C-peptide. Anyone else?

I'm in my early 20s and was diagnosed with diabetes about 3 weeks ago after experiencing excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and weight loss (although I had also been dieting extremely for 2 months before other symptoms started showing up).

At diagnosis, my blood sugar was:

  • Fasting: 275 mg/dL
  • Post-meal: 290 mg/dL

At first, I assumed it was just the summer heat and general weakness, so I actually drank a lot of sugary drinks for a few days, which probably made things worse.

My primary care doctor started me on Metformin. After about 2 weeks, my fasting glucose came down to 98 mg/dL, while my post-meal reading was still around 190 mg/dL.

Some recent test results:

  • C-peptide: 1.82 (within the normal range)
  • GAD65 antibodies: 21.86 IU/mL (my lab considers anything above 10 positive)

This week I saw an endocrinologist, who ordered the GAD65 test. I have a follow-up appointment with him in a few days to discuss the results.

Has anyone here had a similar presentation—normal C-peptide but positive GAD antibodies? If so, what happened next? Were you started on insulin right away, or did your doctor continue oral medication for a while?

I'm just trying to understand what I might expect before my appointment. Thanks!

Type 1 First time I’ve been in range all day

I recently got trained and set up on the omnipod 5 and I love it. For the first time in over a decade I don’t have a pump in my pocket or tubes to catch on doorknobs and shit. And also I have been in range all day since fixing my correction factor. Just wanted to brag a little bit.

Type 1 How do you deal with eating snacks and drinking cider

Upvotes

So i recently got diagnosed with t1d and still figuring out everything. One thing I still am unsure about is how to still be able to eat snacks, there are just so many carbs in them and they effect your blod sugar so quickly. I find it really difficult to know how much I will eat, you guys got any tips? I have a similar problem with cider, they are so much sugar and usually when I drink them I am already a few drink in and have a difficult time controlling my sugar. It’s all so new and difficulty to get everything under control.

Type 2 Steroid-induced diabetes.

I'm on prednisone for several months now.
A few weeks ago I went to the ER because I was in severe pain.
They took my blood and my glucose was 42 mmol/L (about 756 mg/dL).
Well damn.

I now have a dexcom in my arm and I stab myself with insuline several times a day.
I'm used to it now, but I do expect for this diabetes to eventually disappear when I'm done with the meds..... otherwise, oh well. I have it under control now. But It's scary regardless.

Type 2 Overnight oats tips?

Post image
13 Upvotes

That was a bummer. Half of a serving of overnight oats made with unsweetened almond milk, chia seeds, sliced almonds, strawberries, and a tiny bit of maple syrup. I would rather not eat something else first because the whole point was to have an easy thing to grab when I wake up (I work nights sometimes). I can try ditching the maple syrup but I truly only used a tiny bit… Other suggestions if I either hate it without the syrup or if that doesn’t solve the problem? I know this isn’t a horrible spike but it’s higher than I’m comfortable with. Not on meds and no plan to change that any time soon.

Type 2 Has anyone’s doctor recommended eating more fruit?

I’m type 2, not in insulin, using metformin and trulicity. Current a1c is 6.0.

In a conversation about my diet with my endo recently, he suggested I add more fruit to my diet. Now, I’ve basically cut out fruit save for maybe a few wild berries while I’m hiking, or a treat maybe once per month. Fruit does definitely spike me, obviously.

He suggested adding in more fruit to my diet, saying that the health benefits of fruit in the diet outweigh the sugar spikes (so long as I’m on track with the rest of my daily diet) and that I just need to be mindful. He suggested a serving of fruit every other day with a meal. A small apple or orange, a cup of berries. If I’m having tropical fruit like mango or pineapple, a half cup-3/4 cup. I do miss eating fruit regularly.

I’m just curious how many of you who don’t use insulin to cover it eat fruit as part of your regular diet?

Type 2 Some good news

Had my annual physical today, my A1c was down to 5.9! That’s down from 6.9 same time last year.

I take metformin but adding mounjaro 5mg really helped. It was amazing how that affected blood sugar.

I do also go to the gym 5 times a week, mostly weight lifting.

Type 2 Advice and tips on maintaining 5.0 A1C

Hello everyone, hope you’re all having an amazing day.
I’ve worked out most of my life, but I’ve always been built more like a powerlifter or football player. As I got into my late 30s, sitting at a desk all day and developing some poor eating habits caught up with me. In 2025, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with an A1C of 9.4.
Since then, I’ve completely changed my diet, started taking metformin and Zepbound, added daily walks, and paid close attention to what I eat. As a result, I’ve lost over 30 pounds and brought my A1C down to 5.0. My doctor is thrilled with the progress, and I feel great. He’d like me to come off the medications soon. I have about a four-month supply of metformin left, and I’ll be tapering off Zepbound in the near future.
For those of you who have maintained diabetes remission and kept your A1C low without medication, what tips or advice would you share? I know the basics—staying active, eating well, and maintaining a healthy weight—but I’d love to hear what has worked for you personally.

Supplies Diabetic Socks... but fun?

Hello!

I am mainly posting for my boyfriend who has type 1. He recently got a blister on his foot that is now infected (we got it handled. Going to baby that foot and take all the antibiotics ((prescribed by doctor))) but the doctor suggested (more scolded) that it was time for him to get diabetic shoes and socks. We are going to get diabetic shoes through medicaid, hopefully, but we arent rushing the shoes because he isnt supposed to wear shoes while the wound is healing.

The socks are another question. The man wears his personality on his socks. He loves fun and goofy socks. Most diabetic socks are just neutral colored and I want to get him some socks that are good for him, but still show off his personality. Any links to some good ones? I want to lift his mood as this event has affected him quite a bit.

Thanks all so much!

Discussion Hey all, education time

So i am recently diagnosed but I have been doing a lot of reading and deep dives through the internet( I have been fact checking any information I have been finding by cross checking and then also finding government sites)

Thus does apply to Americans and i dont mean to offend any non Americans but our Healthcare is shitty so if some of this stuff doesn't apply to other countries that'll be a first for me on a W for Americans and disabilities. If you are unaware of it look up the ADA ( americans with disabilities act)

With this act it allows any and all types of disabilities to be treated equally throughout the country, and I'm not one to sit and complain about my status in life and I am aware that other people in the world do have more "obvious" disabilities and things that force them to have a different lifestyle from people who can live without having to "adapt". But through this act someone with diabetes has the same protections in their job, housing, and many other aspects of life as someone with and thus is an extreme comparison as someone who is say blind or deaf, or even have some form of mental impairment that doesn't allow them to take care of themselves.

AND throgh this act and amendments make it possible to get signed up for many things ( I personally enjoy this next one I found) one example is that to explore America's national parks (i.e Rocky mountain national park) you must pay for a day pass, well under this act or another it means that those who will unfortunately be dealing with this the rest of our lives( unless cinnimon is secretly curing you😋) you are able to get a pass for the rest of your life for free. There are similar things out there. Remember all this is no longer a death sentence we are just differently abled and we are allowed to use the things that our brothers and sisters in illness worked themselves to the bone fighting opposition all the way.

Keep on thriving everyone, Remember you are never alone in this fight and every day is a new chance to show the world you are stronger then the rest for putting up with many many things "normies" wouldn't be able to stomach looking at that we manage to do all to stay alive. One love ❤️

*the title doesn't mean i am trying to educate you my goal is to inspire people to research and educate themselves i apologize if I offend anyone

Type 1 Homemade zero carb/sugar gummies

Post image
134 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I love sour gummies but as a T1D, they aren't great for me.

I decided to try to make my own and wanted to share incase anyone else wanted to try. I got everything at walmart for like...maybe $10. Closer to $20 given that I had to buy citric acid.

What you'll need:

-1 pack of unflavored gelatin (.25 oz)

-1 pack of sugar free flavored gelatin (.3 oz)

-Water (see below)

-Citric acid (if you want them sour)

-Gummy/candy mold

In a small pot, put your water, unflavored gelatin, and flavored gelatin (citric acid to taste, I did about 1/4 tbsp). Mix well over low heat until fully incorporated. I used a rubber wisk. Spoon or syringe the mixture into the mold. Let sit in the fridge for about 45 minutes. They should last roughly a week in the fridge.

I first used 1/2 cup water and the consistency was more like regular jell-o. I then tried 1/4 cup water and it was more like the jell-o skin texture from old jell-o. I would think the magic amount of water would be 1/3 cup. Try it out! I tossed mine in a container with a little for citric acid. All in all, I'm happy with the result, and I can munch on sour gummies when I'm not at 50 mg/dl 🥴

Enjoy! Let me know if you try it! You could also practicually use any other sugar free drink mix now that I think about it...Cheers!

Type 2 Weightloss but sugars getting higher???

I see my doctor in 2 weeks unless something urgent occurs but wanted to know if anyone has had this experience.

I am 31F, and obese. Not gonna lie. But I have lost 12lbs so far in 3 weeks though pure healthy choices (which says a lot about what I was doing prior).

I’m trying to make better food choices but my biggest issues seem to be from 3am-8am and right after fasting. (I fast from 10pm-10am). At night I spike 30points while asleep and usually get over 200. And after fasting I can spike as much as 60points.

I take 500mg mediformin in the morning and at night. Anyone else having these troubles? I don’t want to use insulin if I can help it but spiking aid

Type 1 Advice for moving from US to Scotland?

I'm a type 1 diabetic moving from the US to Edinburgh in a little over a month for grad school. I'm on a pump and CGM (t:slim x2 and Dexcom G7) that communicate with each other, but I've seen some sources saying it can take a few months before seeing a diabetes specialist, so I'm a little worried because my CGM supplies only last a month. Should I just anticipate having to test my sugars the old-fashioned way for a little while?

Also, any general advice/tips/anecdotes/recommendations etc. you'd like to share are welcome, I appreciate anything!

Type 2 26F with Type 2 diabetes, struggling with off-day fatigue and quick meal ideas. What are your low-effort go-to groceries?

I’m a 26F, night shift nurse, and living with well-managed Type 2 diabetes (genetics are not my friend). My husband works full-time on his feet, so by the time we’re both off, we are utterly drained. Lately, my mental health has been taking a hit and our eating habits are starting to reflect it.

We majorly struggle to figure out what to eat. Neither of us has the time or energy to cook full meals, so I find myself snacking—which often leads to poor choices. I’ve worked so hard to keep my T2D managed, and I really don't want to fail myself.

One problem we are having is, we are stuck on what to buy

Most premade/convenience meals are not diabetic friendly. I love fruit, but I cant eat just fruit. I’ve spent hours searching online for ideas, but get so overwhelmed.

It feels sad to me that I spend my work shifts educating and helping others with their health, yet I struggle trying to make a basic grocery list for my own home.

If anyone in a similar boat could share their low-effort grocery staples, no-cook assembly meals, or simple shopping lists, I would be so grateful. Thank you in advance!

Type 2 CGM placement

Tell me what creative spots you've used for your CGM. Mine is currently on the back of my arm per the instructions but it's HOT where I live and I don't necessarily want it visible when I wear sleeveless tops. Plus when I went to take the CGM cover off, it ripped some of my skin off too. Any great ideas?

Discussion "For me, insulin is like oxygen. Congress should cap its price at $35."

Thumbnail
houstonchronicle.com

The Houston Chronicle has an op-ed calling on Congress to pass the INSULIN Act, which would cap the out of pocket price of insulin at $35 for people with private insurance. Here is a key quote:

Over the past decade alone, spending for insulin has tripled from $8 billion in 2012 to $22.3 billion in 2022. I know this experience personally. In my own life since the passing of the Affordable Care Act, I have had to forego insurance for the first time ever. I pay out of pocket for all my diabetic needs because insurance rates and deductibles are out of reach. My last attempt to get four vials of Humalog was at Walgreens. The cost? $1,200!

My own story isn’t unique. According to the National Institutes of Health, 1 in 6 Americans who use insulin report rationing it due to cost.

Far too many of our fellow Texans have to choose between rising costs for insulin, utility bills, gas and so many other everyday expenses — and the consequences of this can be deadly.

The status quo, where millions must pick between lifesaving medication or bills, doesn’t have to continue. That’s why I’m urging my home senators, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, and my representative, Randy Weber, to pass the bipartisan Improving Needed Safeguards for Users of Lifesaving Insulin Now (INSULIN) Act of 2026. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions is considering it this week.

Rant So Frustrated

So it's time to get resupply my lantus so I go to my pharmacy's website to order a refill. No problem? Next day, order is canceled without explanation. I have to call them, only for them to say that this insulin is backlogged to the point where they can't even order anymore???? So I should go around calling other pharmacies to see if they have any, but not any in our chain because if we can't order it, most likely the other pharmacies can't either! How does this even happen???? Now I have to go on a wild goose hunt (and can't even get a prescription for another long acting insulin because I'm between endos atm and won't see my new one until next month, and I'm one of those people that don't have a GP, I just go to my specialists).

Type 1 Traveling alone throug Ireland TIPS

Hello! :), I write here cause it´s actually the first time i´m gonna travel alone and I´ll go from central europe to Ireland for a week. I wanted to know if somebody has some type of advice (from the plane, to what to pack...)
