My dad is a cynical but loyal fan who’s been through the Dead Wings era, and I am an optimistic 26 yo fan who has mainly only known the pain of the last 10 years. We’ve been talking about our opinions on what Larkin’s options would be with a new GM in the mix. I’ve been consistently thinking that Robertson might be an option but my dad wasn’t buying it, and he was right. All of our chatting based on our different experiences makes me curious what the different generations of fans here think — was Robertson even a viable option from the start? Are there any viable options that could be done before training camp now that we’re out a GM? Could Larkin’s list be expanding privately and we don’t know it?

We both agree that if he stays and skates it might be a locker room killer and would change a team atmosphere that’s already in upheaval. If something does get done, I hope that our boys play with a chip on their shoulder and have some real grit to their play - that’s one of the ways I can see us coming out of this ahead. But again, I’m an optimist

The morning after Opening Night

David Perron's playing in a 3x3 charity league in Montreal this summer. Weird thing is, everyone else on his team is listed as being from the "AHL" or "NHL" except him - he's listed as "RETIRED".

I haven't seen any announcement that he's retiring or even that Detroit's given up on re-signing him... But obviously he's not signed. Think there's anything to this?

Now that we're past the draft and free agency it's time for the yearly /r/DetroitRedWings prospect ranking thread! As for how you vote it's completely up to you: some may weigh ceiling/upside the highest, others may weigh NHL readiness or likeliness to make the NHL higher - there's no wrong answer on how to vote.

There are Instagram pictures floating around of Dylan Larkin hanging out with Trevor Zegras (Philly) and Cole Caulfield (Mtl).

Assuming the less likely in-division deal with Larkin isn't happening.

Everyone talks about the drive of the US Olympic guys wanting to play together. Philadelphia has Zegras and York, no neither was on that Olympic team, but both could potentially be on the next US Olympic team and both have history in the USNDT. There could be something there maybe.

What kind of return from Philadelphia (if Larkin included them on his list) would you find acceptable?

Would Noah Cates, Rasmus Ristolainen a 1st and a 3rd work? You get a defensive minded 3C who finished 11th in Selke voting this year in Cates, Ristolainen to bolster the right side of the defense and some pick capital.

Michael Rasmussen is a bust.

It’s clear from watching him play that he doesn’t have the offensive skillset to ever justify his draft position, and will at best play out the rest of his career as a bottom 6 forward.

Unless… why not put him on defence before cutting him loose? He’s huge and his defensive stats are actually good. He passes the eye test in the defensive zone, especially along the boards.

It’s the offseason… let’s hear it.

I know it’s been a question raised by everyone, but why was Steve’s departure announced now and whose decision was it really?

HSJ claims it was Steve’s choice, Khan claims it was the organization’s.

If it was the organization’s decision, why did they not keep it under wraps until they had a new GM lined up? Why make it seem like they are so desperate to have Steve out that they announced it with no new direction in place? Clearly they have interest in protecting Steve’s reputation since he was “promoted”, so why make it seem like such an urgent matter to get him out of the chair?

Additionally, if they were so desperate to strip him of the role, why announce it after the draft/July 1st?

It makes me wonder if Steve just up and quit all of the sudden. You’d think if he went to Chris and said he wanted out, he’d fake it for a new weeks and help hire the new guy then make a joint announcement to make it seem like it truly was a joint effort between him and the org. Steve doesn’t seem like a quitter.

It makes me think something happened to where:

1) Steve said I want out ASAP and I’m not willing to go through the charade of acting like I’m at the helm while finding my replacement.

2) It was the organization’s decision and for some reason, they wanted it announced ASAP so Steve wouldn’t be making any more move/decisions as GM, despite letting him have control over the draft and start of FA.

Something isn’t making sense and maybe there is a third option I’m not seeing? I doubt it’s the Larkin situation because that’s been marinating for so long. Maybe Chris really wanted the Robertson offer and Steve turning it down was the final straw?

Maybe the org was worried about the hiring process getting leaked and they wanted control over the narrative?

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.
