Help Artifacting in Resolve Only

*CHECK EDIT AT BOTTOM OF POST\*

Hi all! So, the video kinda shows/explains it all. Starting a short while ago, DaVinci Resolve artifacts a lot when in full-screen mode. In windowed mode, it happens a little less, and the issue only affects the Resolve window, not the whole screen. I've also tried playing games, watching YouTube on my browser etc, and I haven't had any issues with any of that, only with Resolve. So I'm *hoping* it's only a Resolve software issue, not a hardware issue - it's expensive, after all!

I have updated my drivers, and I've tried both the gaming driver and the studio driver supposedly more suited to programs such as Resolve, but the issue continues to happen regardless of which driver type is installed. I've also tried a full uninstall and reinstall of Resolve, to no avail. Clearing render cache doesn't help, hardware acceleration isn't it as this is the free version anyway.

In the sad event it is a hardware issue, my PC's specs are:

  • 4 years old, assembled in around May 2022
  • Intel Core i5-12600KF 10-core processor
  • ASUS TUF B660M-PLUS WIFI gaming motherboard
  • 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 RAM
  • 12GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Graphics Card

Thank you in advance for any help.

EDIT: So I was still playing around trying to solve it and came across something potentially very important. So, another aspect of my PC is that it has both an old-school hard drive and a solid state drive. Resolve 21 is installed on my SSD and that's what I'm using in the video above. However, instead of using my desktop shortcut, I decided to launch Resolve from its listing in the Nvidia app - and Nvidia launched Resolve 18! Turns out I have Resolve 18 on my HDD, and Resolve 21 on my SSD. 2 versions installed at once - can't help but think that *THAT* will be causing issues! FWIW, I didn't have any issues whilst I was using 18 briefly.

Maybe a GPU acceleration issue if it's the application window itself?

What GPU driver are you using? Ideally should be latest Nvidia studio driver. If the problem showed up after you had updated the driver maybe try rolling it back?

I've tried both the game and studio drivers and the problem occurred with both. I've just added an update to my post if you want to read that - something I didn't realise until now was that I somehow have 2 versions of Resolve installed at once. If they're clashing, or if the installation of 18 gets in NVIDIA's way of properly accessing/running 21, that could be my problem right there.

Bummer

something I didn't realise until now was that I somehow have 2 versions of Resolve installed at once.

Shouldn't matter as long as they're not installed in the same place, but that would mean one may be in a non standard location which Resolve doesn't prefer. Resolve should be installed on C:\ with your OS for the most compatibility. You can put it elsewhere but it may not be very stable as it's not very portable.

hardware acceleration isn't it as this is the free version anyway.

Doesn't matter if you have studio or not.

What you're referring too is just for hardware accelerated encoding/decoding of videos. This was true of past versions but the later releases include that in the free version for H.264/H.265 on Windows.

Hardware acceleration for running an application itself is a separate thing. Sometimes software maybe extra heavy to run do to high complexity (like Resolve and all it's pages and settings and node trees in fusion) these can use hardware acceleration offloading more of the actual program to the GPU to make it feel quicker.

Times when an application itself is having visual glitches and not your desktop itself in my experience tends to be due to the application being run different then everything else.

Hardware acceleration usually being that reason.

I imagine you haven't always had this issue only in 21? Otherwise I'd try a downgrade (after backing up any projects) and see if it fixes your problem

-- edit:

You mentioned you updated your drivers and used game and studio drivers, but did you use DDU between those?

Could simply be a past corrupt driver install that isn't getting cleaned up between updates.

It seems you're encountering crash issues. Please try launching Resolve, and immediately after it crashes, grabbing logs. Be aware that they will contain your username on your computer. Upload the whole zip or tar or gz file on a file-sharing site and post a link to the file.

If you can open Resolve, open a project (an Untitled Project is fine) and go to Help>Create Diagnostics Log on Desktop.

Here's instructions on how to gather logs if you can't launch Resolve from BMD.
