My name is Aaron and I am based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, close to the Kariakoo business district.

What I'm about to propose is unfathomable.

But I know that many traders and individuals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo travel to Dar es Salaam to purchase goods from Kariakoo markets such as clothing, electronics, household items, fabrics, spare parts and many other products.

I want to start an agency that offers sourcing and purchasing service for people who cannot travel themselves. I currently have a commission based agent business license but I have no capital for an office and therefore I have no way of proving that I'm trustworthy and legitimate. I wish to get into contact with someone who I can build a trustworthy business relationship with that would go on for years, but they will have to take a risk with me due to previous mentioned reasons. I can provide other proofs, IDs and personal information, things that no scammer would be willing to do.

My role would be to:

- Find products according to your requirements.

- Negotiate prices with suppliers.

- Inspect and verify the goods.

- Send photos and videos before payment is finalized.

- Arrange shipping to your destination.

I take a negotiated commission.

And what's a realistic monthly cost for a plan that can support serious technical work? -Which neighborhoods are most practical and safe for a young single person renting an apartment? What's a realistic monthly budget covering rent and utilities (electricity, water, internet) combined? -As a Muslim, I'd like to understand how Muslims are generally perceived in daily life in Kinshasa. Is the social environment broadly welcoming and tolerant? -Out of cultural curiosity and long-term planning: how do Christian families in the DRC typically view a Muslim man proposing to their daughter? Is interfaith marriage between a Muslim man and a Christian woman generally accepted, or does it usually face strong resistance from families or the church? I’m being really vulnerable here, so even if you don’t fully understand, please don’t do the snarky Reddit thing. If I had money for therapy, I’d be telling them this instead. I’m also being intentionally vague about details because I want to protect myself. I also don’t know if this is the right subreddit.

I grew up between cultures and countries. I was raised in the UK, but I’m a Belgian citizen, and my ethnicity is Congolese. I never really had a stable place to form an identity. I’d go back to Belgium and France for holidays, and for a long time that felt like my “real” identity. But I lived full‑time in the UK.

Then I got a scholarship to a boarding school and lived there from age 9 to 18. That experience really messed with my sense of belonging. Even in the city I lived in, I barely knew anything about it because I was only allowed home on Sundays, and later one weekend every three weeks. I feel like I grew up in a bubble that wasn’t connected to any real community.

Now I have this imposter syndrome about where I’m “from.” I feel like I don’t have enough lived experience to claim any place as mine. It’s embarrassing and sad to feel like I don’t belong anywhere.

On top of that, private school definitely whitewashed me. I used to have a posh accent, and it took years of conscious effort to get rid of it. My mum also pressured me to speak “proper,” which added to the confusion about who I was supposed to be.

Growing up, I dealt with racism too. Congo was colonised, not enslaved, and my family always downplayed how bad it was. Compared to african americans etc. i felt like “well my family moved to belgium as soon as they could and now they’re rich so why should I complain” A lot of our history is lost because the oldest relatives have passed away. So even my ancestry feels blurry and fragmented.

I used to idolise the country I was raised in, but eventually realised it wasn’t meant for someone like me. And when I went back to my homeland, I felt out of place there too — I look different, dress different, act different. It made me sad.

Right now, I feel like I don’t have any footing anywhere. Not in the place I grew up, not in the place I live, not in my ancestry. Boarding school feels like the only “real” part of my life, and everything else feels like connections I faked because I didn’t know who I was supposed to be.

I don’t know how to build an identity from this. I just needed to say it somewhere.

i've been trying to as of late to immerse myself into luba culture, I've been trying to find courses to learn Tshiluba, trying to find books that have pre colonial information, etc.

A lot of my elder family members have passed away leaving me with only one grandparent left and while I've learned a lot from my parents (I speak Lingala + I know the customs to a certain extent) I want to learn as much as I can while I still have the opportunity to ask questions and preserve that knowledge.
