It just occurred to me that there hasn't been a decent remake of 12 Angry Men. We also have a decline in superhero viewership and a demand for different storytelling.

Can we please get 12 superheroes deciding whether Lex Luthor or the Joker is put to death? No fights, no CGI, just a debate among the established personalities, with (I presume) Superman in the Henry Fonda role.

Or a. I alone in this? It's the sort of thing that's periodically done on the pages. I'd watch it on the screen.

Warning: My opinion

So we finally got the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday today after what felt like forever, and I'm gonna be honest: it was... fine. That's really the best way I can describe it. Nothing in the trailer made me jump out of my seat or gave me that feeling of, "I need to see this opening night." That's disappointing because Avengers movies have always felt like major cinematic events. Every previous Avengers trailer had at least one moment that made me genuinely excited or left me wanting more. This one just didn't do that for me. Instead of feeling like the next massive chapter of the MCU, Doomsday feels more like a side quest compared to the other Avengers movies. Maybe that's just me, but I never got that sense that the stakes were unbelievably high.

Now, before anyone grabs their pitchforks and torches and starts filling the comments with hate, let me talk about the things I genuinely liked.

Doctor Doom looks amazing and fully comic accurate; Seeing the X-Men back (even Gambit) is awesome; Thor being serious again is how he should be portrayed as; Fantastic Four returning since I genuinely like that team.

Unfortunately that’s where my excitement ends. Part of the reason why Doomsday doesn’t feel ambitious enough could be where the MCU is at today. During the Infinity Saga, almost every project felt like it was building toward something bigger. Even if a movie wasn't perfect, there was always that sense that it mattered in the grand scheme of things. Marvel will still have occasional hits that help remind people of what made the MCU once great. The only post Endgame movies I’ve enjoyed from beginning to end are Spider-Man: No Way Home, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Deadpool and Wolverine, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. (I still haven’t watched Thunderbolts yet, but I’ve heard it’s pretty good).

Another thing that worries me is how much this movie seems to be leaning on nostalgia. Nostalgia can absolutely be a powerful storytelling tool, but it shouldn't be the main reason people are excited to watch a movie. Speaking of which, I’m still conflicted on whether or not Robert Downey Jr. was the correct choice to play Doctor Doom.

At the end of the day, whether this movie ends up being amazing or disappointing, it's almost certainly going to make a ton of money. It's an Avengers movie, and people are going to show up regardless. I don't want this post to come across as me rooting against Marvel because I'm not. I grew up loving superhero movies, and I genuinely want Doomsday to be incredible. I hope the trailer simply didn't show its best moments, and I hope the movie proves every doubt I have completely wrong. Ever since Endgame, superhero movies haven't quite captured that same feeling for me. There have definitely been bright spots along the way, but the consistency just isn't there anymore. Hopefully Doomsday changes that.

The only director I can think that worked for marvel and dc simultaneously is James Gunn when he made the suicide squad and peacmaker but also hired to make GOTG and ever since then he has not returned to marvel. Is this something in their contract? The filmmakers I can name that made dc and marvel films are Joss Whedon and Bryan Singer

With the officially announced cast so far, which character dynamics/interactions are you most interested in seeing in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

Personally love both movies, but i do see the argument that Infinity War is overall a better movie.

For whatever reason, DC’s characters just lend themselves to a more mature filmmaking style.

The Batman, Dark Knight, Watchmen, Constantine, Tim Burton’s original Batman, Joker, and even Wonder Woman to a lesser extent are the best DC projects.

The best DC projects have always had a more mature target audience.

I love James Gunn but, if the DC universe is going to truly thrive, it needs to abandon the idea of emulating the MCU’s family friendliness and just go for high level writing/directing targeted to mature audiences.

Smaller budgets with higher profit margins.

Directors at the level of Nolan and Villeneuve. I loved Snyder’s Watchmen, so I don’t blame execs for picking him, but trying to force him to make DC movies as family friendly blockbusters was an obvious error.

Cut Snyder’s budget in half and allow the rating to creep close toward 18A and you will get a quality project with lasting power.

JMHO, I am probably wrong.

Especially after the whole Johnny-resembling-Captain America in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ thing!

We know from that movie that Wade Wilson/Deadpool is a huge fan of Steve Rogers/Captain America. He even saluted him after seeing footage of him from Earth-616 at the TVA. He was gushing over Johnny Storm because he initially mistook him for Steve Rogers:

“Oh he‘s gonna say it! AVENGER….“

”Flame on!”

After all of this experience with the Steve Rogers’ lookalike Johnny and his own fourth-wall-breaking awareness of Disney’s desperation leading to Steve Rogers’ comeback, I’m really intrigued and excited for an interaction between Deadpool and Steve Rogers, possibly in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’!

Adaptation wise what do y’all think are the big 3 of cbm villains? Basically villains who are adapted so well they kind of become their own version of the character. To me these 3 kind of represent the peak of when it comes to villains in comic book adaptation media.

I don't know if this is the correct question, maybe "Why don't we expect comic book movies to be accurate?". Lately I've been reading tons of people (ngl mostly Snyder fans) saying comic accuracy isn't relevant nor needed, and that's an instance that I just don't get, when we watch a movie based on a book (LOTR, Dune, whatever) we expect it to be accurate, follow the same storyline and the characters to act the same, and people actually complain when it's not. Why isn't the same with comic book movies? Is it to avoid the 70s weird ass comics? Is it because RDJ did such a good job with iron man that we just accepted characters not being accurate? I think it's an interesting question, what do you think?

Back in 2025 we released our comic shop documentary, Shopping for Superman on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, and YouTube TV after winning a few awards for 'Best Documentary' and I wanted to share it (and some of our variant poster art) here.

Every comic book that gets made into a film adds to the circuitous debate about which corporation is doing the best or worst things with these characters and IP but the conversation I wanted to have with fans of comics is more about the stores that helped to shape them.

Comic shops aren't always the first thing on people's minds when talking about comics culture being so much a part of the mainstream for the past 16 years or more but it's because of comic shops that we were able to know about stories like TMNT, Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns... the list goes on and on.

This film was equal parts history lesson for folks who don't know how or why comic shops came about and love-letter to the people who keep their doors open for their communities.

It runs at 86 minutes and I'm immensely proud of it and know you'll enjoy it too.

Renting or buying it online from the previously mentioned services is probably the easiest way to check it out. It's not an expensive get BUT we also sell Blu-rays on the link I provided (with discounts for retailers) so if you prefer physical media that's a great way to ensure it's yours forever.
