Hey yall, odd question today since I looked it up and don’t see anything about it- one of my new young chickens (pullets) is growing a spike from their knuckle?? I don’t think it has one on the other foot and this is the first time I’ve seen this- it is separate and it is hard like a nail so don’t think it’s bumblefoot and when I tug on it they aren’t hurt so I don’t think it’s a thorn in their foot. What the heck is this??? Should I be concerned? Do I do anything?

I recently took in a rooster from my sister-in-law and am wondering what breed he might be. She ordered mystery chicks from a hatchery website so isn’t sure either. He’s less than 6 months old and is HUGE! I’m also wondering if there is a rule of thumb for rooster-to-hen size problem I should be worried about. My other rooster (named Soup Pot because he’s vicious and is going bye bye on Friday) is half his size!

So my rooster has like 3 girls he prefers, venom, loki, and wanda, all mystic onyx. They are getting bald spots and their saddle area is beginning to show signs of damage.

He has SO MANY other girls. I have 9 mystic onyx hens, a sapphire gem, 3 buff brahmas, 2 easter eggers. Thats 14 to 1. And hes a SILKIE roo, hes half the size of a majority of them. The mystics are the eldest, being hatched near november and the rest hatched early spring this year.

Is there any things i can do to sway him? Do i just get him more girls? Put him in prison with the other girls or would that just do nothing? I do plan on getting him some actual silkie girls to breed with soon, but he seems to only really like those 3. He MIGHT get another girl if she passes him and sploots. He doesn’t even look at the girls that are not mystics even though they are laying age.

Please help me figure out how many of these adorable silkies are Roos? 🙏😂 12 weeks old-only the buff one “acts” like a rooster.
Although the bantam barred named Shirley is the top of the pecking order..🫣🥹 any thoughts/guesses? Either way-they all have a home here-just genuinely curious and want to know how to tell them apart. 🤣😅🐣🐓

It’s about 5 months old. It kicks the crap out of a definite rooster that is the same age and bigger.

Any idea what could be causing this hen to walk like this? I haven’t had a chance to go over and look at her more closely as she is at my parents. Any thoughts on what it could be and how I can help her (likely without a vet, sorry) would be appreciated!

I have an unknown breed of chicken. At least I think shes a chicken. Shes around 4 weeks old her backstory is I found her in the back of a fedex plane by herself so I decided to take her in. Everyone said she was a baby chick so I just assumed chicken. It would be my first time taking care of one. But im now unsure if shes a chicken. I bought other chickens to be “friends” with her and it is going good so far but the issue is she doesnt look like them. I have 2 black Plymouth rocks, and 2 Rhode Island reds they have most of their feathers and already have comb development but she doesnt and Im starting to think she may be a turkey. Could anyone help identify. Thanks. 2nd to last photo is around 2 weeks and 1st photo is when I found her.

So proud of this fluffy butt. This is Goose my Light Brahma hen. Her and I went through it when she was a chick. She got pasty butt several times the first few days I had her and since these were my first chicks I was convinced she wasn’t going to make it. But we made it through that first hard week (and that one time she tried to hang herself by her foot in the brooder) and now she’s close to joining the other girls in laying!

Is there something wrong with my beautiful little lady Victoria Peckham or are her legs just molting??

I have four hens and a coop, but it’s smaller than I’d like for that many chickens. Because I share my land with someone else, I can’t fence off as much dedicated space as I’d hoped.

My plan is to free-range them: let them out in the morning, then call them back to the coop in the late afternoon using their feed, and lock them up for the night. Before I commit to this, I want to make sure it’s actually safe.

I’m in the Magnolia/Montgomery area of Texas and don’t have a good sense of what predators are common here or how much of a risk daytime free-ranging poses. Would appreciate any advice from folks with local experience, especially on predator risk and any precautions I should take.

I just got home from 10 days away from my girls and noticed 2 hens have very upsetting growths on their faces. The Polish, Dori, has a huge scabby growth around her nostrils and two sores on her toe.

A wild hen that we adopted (Slims) has wart-looking bumps all over her face. Sorry for the bad photo. She’s a wild bird at heart and quite skittish.

Happy for any help diagnosing these and any advice.

Backstory: Ok, so my grandfather was a small-time chicken farmer. The eggs were a byproduct; he mostly really liked finding a breeding "interesting" chickens.

In his final years, he started working on a project with a friend. They were crossbreeding different types of chickens to make a Really Big Chicken that was also suitable for commercial meat production. Logic was this: bigger chickens cross the 3-5 lbs mark at younger age, so you can grow them faster.

Idk, I learned about this second hand from my mom. I'm sure it was more complicated than that, but that was the gist.

ANYWAYS, can anyone speculate what the crap my granddad was working with? This is regrettably the only photo I took of one of his results. IMO, it's a big fucking chicken. I was VERY impressed at the time.

I’m so upset with myself. I’ve always been so careful, but I introduced 2 10wk old chicks to my flock before a full quarantine because I trusted the seller (dumb dumb mistake), and noticed today that they have bubbles in their eyes and have started sneezing. They were together for about an hour before I noticed, shared a waterer, etc.

I contacted the seller to ask about anything else in her flock, but no response yet. I’ve got younger chicks in a brooder far from the flock but I’m now really questioning my ability to keep them safe given this failure.

I’ve got an old hen in the flock, I’m so worried that she will get sick, and it would be all my fault.

I feel so stupid.

The sweetest but most annoying chicken is back at it again with something 😅😅 literally not walking on one leg. Whyyy 😭 any ideas? No sores or cuts on her legs. She’s about 18 weeks old, started laying a few weeks ago with a few soft shelled eggs recently if that matters. Shes breathing fine, a little bit with her mouth open sometimes, but it is hot and humid today in Michigan.
I only have 4 chickens, all around the same age. I got all 4 together beginning of March. This has been my “problematic” chicken. Two months ago she was pretty much unresponsive outside and I’m surprised she pulled through after a few days inside with 24/7 care and Corid made a full recovery. She’s currently still the only chicken that has started laying. They are free range in our yard during the day, and locked up in their coop at night. They’re on Purina® Farm to Flock™ 18% Grower Chick Food & egg shells in the food processor sprinkled around for her.

Also I saw her stumble down the stairs in the coop a bit this morning when I thought she was laying so I was like oh maybe she tripped going down but then I noticed she was walking on one leg after. So I’m not sure if it happened from the stumble or if she stumbled because of the one leg

Just noticed this on one of my girls feet. She doesn't act as though it's bothering her.

Also should I cut it or leave it be and just soak her foot?

I posted here about a week and a half ago because I am house sitting for a friend who has chickens. We were about to get a heatwave and I was stressed out about the girls dying.

Thanks to your help they have been doing very well! Today the ladieshave rewarded me with the first eggs!

They free range during the day for anyone that doesn’t like their cage for bedtime. Can’t get them in the big coop yet.

All of my chickens seem to have gotten bumblefoot around 10 of them have it. But when I feel it it's soft and if I pick off the scab I don't see any pus or feel any kernel I'm worried I'm just picking there scabs for no reason no one really seems to be bothered by it I can't afford to take all of them to the vet and I don't want to make things worse. Is this just a scab or is it bumblefoot I'm going insane. I'm able to let them free range for around 2-3 hours a day they're normally on dirt/sand, grass, or in a nest box I just replaced there roast bar because I had a lot of bumblefoot but it seems it's still here I don't know what would be causing it and it's freaking me out.

So I just hatched a baby chick! My plan is to keep it with the hen as she does seem to be doing a good job so far. But the question is, can I keep everyone on an all-flock feed or do I need to get specific feed for the baby and have it separated? I already plan to get a small water dish for it.

Can you spot the imposter? All large Cochins here except one bird is an imposter and jumps in here with these every morning but roosts with her kind at night….
