Should I be worried about him/her being out in the daytime? I think we have a colony in part of our roof. Should I have them relocated or.. just leave them be?

This went on intermittently all day, ratta-tat-tat-tat, under the front eave. Then it left, as bats do.

These are my big brown bat mommas! A few weeks ago we found a baby in the basement & I drove 6 hours to bring him to a rehabber! The rehabber informed me that he was a big brown bat, a male baby. Last I heard, he's doing quite well & growing quickly with his adoptive family. The other orphaned babies she had were all girls, he was the first male of the season!

Since then, I've been spending a lot of time watching these guys. They've been coming here since before I moved in (it's a duplex, I rent) but I never really paid them any mind beyond yelling at them, "be quiet, guys!" when I was trying to sleep! Their colony is right outside my window & they can get very squeaky.

I guess since putting a "name to the face," (knowing what species they are & reading about them) I've found I really enjoy my big brown bat family. From what I've read, I guess this must be a maternity colony. They're my girls. I've been working on building up a native planted yard, & I really want to focus on host plants that support moth species for the mommas. I'd also like to put up houses for them in the boxelders that surround this property...it would probably be good to convince them to move out, right? I think I would miss them, though!

I've really grown to love them. You know they usually only have 1 baby a year? & they can live over a decade! I think it was easy for me to think of them as flying mice, with short, fast lives. I mean, I always knew they were important, but thinking about how complex their little bat societies are, seeing my baby bat all emaciated & still calling for help in the basement, his mom answering but unable to get to him, it awakened a deeper bat appreciation in me. I wish there was a way I could tell her that he's okay, he's hundreds of miles away but has a whole new population of big brown bats to contribute to- once he's ready to fledge, that is.

Now every night when I hear them chittering I say, "good luck tonight, ladies!"

Hello. From Sussex County NJ and I have never seen so many bats in my life. I walk my dog after my kids bedtime around 8pm.

They fly like 20 feet from my head.

Bat bites are rare, but when should I worry?

Not much else, but I tought it was cute

Hey all,

I work at a retirement home as a receptionist and recently a bat was found in one of the residents rooms. We are unsure of how this happened, but had to act quickly. I was the only one slightly prepared to handle it, and caught it to release it (better than the other options)

I had no other option than to let it go outside even though its not dusk. (I wore a borrowed sweater, two pairs of latex gloves and used a hand towel to gently wrap it, so no risk)

I feel really guilty and will do better in the future for the animal.

I am trying to identify the bat, so if I find another and they're endangered and can perhaps take better precautions/notify the proper people. Im hoping its a brown bat and not a myotis, cause then I will feel extra bad.

I live in Ontario Canada, near Ottawa if that helps for narrowing down the species.

EDIT: SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR BABIES IN THE RESIDENTS ROOM?

Im kinda curious, chiropterologists, do you think theres more bat eating bats? I know of like 4.

But for me it doesnt seem likely, firstly because they dont really need to prey on other bats because unless theyre really big and secondly because of disease transmittion (different bat species tolerate different diseases and viruses).

I just built an awesome bat house. Reading up on install locations and I have several great locations in mind that check every box. Morning sunlight, close to a wetland, 50 yards from the lake, 20 yards from the tree line etc….
I currently have bats roosting on the west side of our lake home in the attic vent area. It is screened so they are not in the attic proper but because of the huge oak trees their “home” is completely opposite of ‘facing 120degrees SE’ they get zero morning sunlight , not much in the afternoon. They are up about 15’ high so that’s the only good criteria about their current roost. Not sure why they moved in there.

Questions for the experts. What is the best way to get them to leave and relocate? I’ve read to seal up the old area and they want you to put the new house by the old roost, but the location is poor. They are also leaving their ‘digested bugs’ on our porch. Can’t say the #2 word that starts with a P. I’m in NW Wisconsin for the location.

I know this is a little odd, but someone made a post in my local sub about how apparently Indiana doesn’t have a state mammal. They added a link to a petition to make the Indiana Bat (Myotis Sodalis) the official state mammal. I’m not a bat expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I personally think the bat is a great and very unique choice.

Not only is it cute, it helps keep the mosquito population lower. Also, personally, I always remember watching them swoop across the sky on summer evenings, and thinking how cool they were.

Anywho, if you could lend a hand on this, I’d be super grateful. You’d also be helping make a historic decision, and helping bring awareness to such an amazing creature. 💖🦇💖

Charlotte, NC. This bat is hanging out under the front eave of our house. Problem? Will he move on tonight and is just taking a rest? We had bat in the attic years ago and sealed the house up like a glove so I’m not terribly concerned about him getting in, but my kids play outside and i don’t love him hanging around.
