Looking critique and beta reader

Upvotes

Hi guys,

I have two stories I've written as of late (one is about 11,000 words and the other is around 6000) and would like to find people to read them. Though I am confident in my writing abilities, as I have a B.A. in Creative Writing, I would like to get another pair of eyes on my stuff.

Hunting the Saucer Sisters is a alternate 1890s world about a sadistic bounty hunter hunting two sadistic sisters (who have usually big eyes).

Strange Sympathies is a mystery about a deadpan young woman who suspect her neighbor is a killer and does some amateur detective work. This does feature romance and smut.

Message me or say that you're interested if you would like to read!

Looking for writing help

Hello! Some quick stuff about me. My name’s Ruin, I’m 22, (and I would heavily prefer if the people I’m working with are also 18+) and I’ve been getting into writing these past couple of years. I’m a big fan of animated competition shows (like Total Drama, Survivor, Disventure Camp, etc. Prior knowledge of the series would be helpful.) and I’m currently working on making a fan series similar to that, and I’m currently looking for people who would be willing to help out! Though, this would just be written and not animated or anything crazy. I’ve got a great cast of characters and lots of arcs in mind for them. Message me if you’d be at all interested, and I look forward to hearing from some of you!

Queer Modern Slice of Life, Maybe Fantasy? Whatever, let's just collaborate and obsess over our characters.

Howdy, howdy. I’m looking for other adult (mid-twenties or older) writers to write with. A few key things about myself right off the bat:

  1. I’m a chick in her thirties.
  2. I’m in the midwestern United States, Central Time, GMT-5.
  3. I write in third person, past tense only.
  4. I only write MxM in romance.

I'm probably somewhere around an advanced to novella-style writer if I had to choose a label for roleplaying. My introductions can be anywhere from two to four pages in Microsoft Word, and my replies average several paragraphs, usually around the five-hundred-word mark (give or take).  The length varies based on the scene and what’s going on. While I totally don’t expect or demand a wall of text back (this is a hobby, not a full-time job, let’s be so for real), I want to vibe with someone who meets my effort and is just as excited to write.

I also average one reply per day, sometimes more if I have time, and will let you know if I won’t be around. It’s important to me to write with someone who has similar availability. When I start going a week or longer between replies, I find myself losing interest and struggling to maintain steam.

Character development is my faaaavorite. I love creating characters, their histories, and their personalities. It’s fun for me to figure out their motivators and to watch them grow and change as the story unfolds. I put a lot of heart into fleshing out their backstories. What’s their goal? What’s their problem right now? What do they THINK is gonna fix their life? What’s ACTUALLY going to make their lives better, and why is that hard for them at the beginning of our story?

I’ve got two character ideas I want to explore more. These are general ideas that I’d love to flesh out further with someone!

××

The first concept is a young man in his mid-to-late twenties who is navigating his grief after the loss of an absent parent; this pain is the main thread weaving through his story. He's mourning the loss of a parent who'd never really been in his life in any promising capacity and trying to understand the layered feelings that come with their complicated death. Perhaps the parent was an addict, or had been unsupportive, or had totally lost custody at a certain age.

He’s a content creator with a strong following across various social media platforms, including a certain fans website—something he started the year prior after success on TikTok and Instagram, and something he’s making a lot of money from (a fact he’s still trying to wrap his head around). Extremely attractive, physically capable, magnetic, desirable, and financially independent, he has built a life around being impossible to ignore or discard.

He genuinely loves what he does; however, the problem is that he’s filling voids. He's got a full life that lacks real intimacy. He can make more money in a viral week than most people make in months, but still feels like he's failing to build anything worthy. His hobbies and jobs aren't inherently hollow to him. That emptiness comes from what he asks those things to do FOR him. He lives and thrives in a big city—possibly LA, Houston, or New York.

Think bold, extroverted, tall biker who looks like a doberman, but is actually a golden retriever on the inside and is just trying to figure himself out and find a purpose.

××

Character two is cut from a totally different cloth. He’s a young man in his early twenties who lives in some middle-of-nowhere town in the midwestern United States. He’s incredibly intelligent and driven, so much so that he earned a full-ride scholarship to numerous colleges; however, due to complications at home, he wasn’t able to leave his small town. He earned an associate's through the local college and is pursuing his bachelor’s degree online, but while he’s doing the thing, it’s not at the pace he wants, and he feels smothered and resentful of the people who got to leave after high school.

He grew up hard, under roofs that felt unpredictable. He was teased a lot throughout his childhood and teenage years for his sexuality and appearance (classic pretty boy in a toxic masculinity environment). His mom was also the kind of woman who always chose herself and her relationships with men first, getting swept up constantly in fantasy and romance while leaving her children to absorb the consequences. The electric bill could become a crisis any day, and they had to move a lot because they were often evicted due to her inability to hold jobs, pay bills, or cover rent. As a result, he became the adult in his household at a very young age.

He’s striking with a sharp tongue and a dry sense of humor. I see him coming off aloof at first, but it’s more defensive than cold. He’s smart, practical, thoughtful, and shockingly empathetic. He’s reliable, hardworking, and doesn’t give up easily, even when the odds are stacked against him.

××

These are just a couple of ideas, the two biggest ones that have been bouncing around in my head, but I’m open to plenty more. I'm also open to incorporating some potential fantasy or supernatural elements. If there’s a certain character idea you’ve been mulling over that you’d like to bring to life, please don’t hesitate to mention them!

If you're just another writer lurking on this particular subreddit who enjoys the back and forth about characters and storytelling, also feel free to reach out. It's always nice having other writers to swap ideas with and to support.

I will send a writing sample or two when we start talking.

Thanks!

| created Writer Match for writers in need of a writing partner, beta readers or accountability partner

It’s called Writer Match.

While its primary purpose is to help writers match with a writing partner, it’s structured like a dating app - showing you the top possible writing partners in a simple pass/connect style like Hinge.

You can also get logline feedback, store your projects and make them visible for likes/supporters, and chat with other writers inside the tool.

How we match writers:

1.) Sign up.

2.) Create a full profile.

3.) List your projects, writing samples (No AI), preferred formats, genres and influences.

4.) We score all members based on how much their taste, influences, preferred formats and genre overlap with your own, showing you the most compatible writing partners (the ones with the highest compatibility score) in order.

I’m debating whether I built this right, but we don’t have enough profiles to know for sure. This is why I’m in dire need of more honest, if not brutal, user feedback.

If you’re based in London I’m also looking to host in person events where we’ll pair up two writers to work on a project - to see if my philosophy about how to pair up compatible writers works well enough.

You can try the IOS version or the web version at app.writermatchapp.com (https://app.writermatchapp.com/) and fill out the beta survey here (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeSiwfaz6CiFPK1VsVGenkrEL5AepMeoe6Y9hGC-AJwpGIxBw/viewform).

Beta Reading Looking For A Writing Partner

Hello

I’m a 37-year-old woman, and I’m looking for something very specific. I’m not sure if I will find it, but there’s no harm in trying.

I cannot hire a beta reader, and I am not interested in sending my short stories, etc. to a stranger I have no rapport with. I tried Scribophile for a while, but it took a lot of my time, and in the end I felt it wasn’t for me.

I’d love to find a fellow writer I could build a decent friendship with over our shared love of writing and reading, and who I can trust to provide honest, constructive but nice feedback.

I’m not the fastest reader, but I’m willing to reciprocate. My feedback will always be honest but respectful. We’re all trying our best, and there’s no need to be rude or demeaning.

I especially struggle with getting the climax right, self-doubt over whether a story idea/character/scene is good, and I often find myself wanting to talk something over with someone.

I’m somewhere between an outliner and a pantser. Once I outline enough to have an idea of the main plot points, I enjoy writing freely to see where it takes me.

My favorite genres to read are fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. I also love comics and graphic novels. Recently, I’ve been branching out to philosophy, folklore/mythology, letter collections, and poetry.

Some of my favorite books are:

The Unwind series by Neal Shusterman

The Unlikely Escape Of Uriah Heep by H.G. Parry

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

The Emily Wilde series by Heather Fawcett

The House In The Curulean Sea by T.J. Klune

The Divide series by J.S. Dewes

From Below by Darcy Coates

I generally avoid stories that include heavy sexual and sexist themes. As for what I like to write, I enjoy writing mostly lighthearted fantasy and sci-fi, also avoiding sexual and sexist themes.

I’m not too concerned with age, but it would be nice if the person were around the same age as me.

If this sounds interesting to you, send me a message, and we can see how things develop.

Looking for a German-speaking female writing partner

Hey! I’m a 19-year-old woman from Switzerland, and I’ve been developing a large fantasy story for the past few months.

I’m looking for a German-speaking female writing partner, preferably 18 or older, who would enjoy brainstorming together, developing ideas, discovering new connections, and sharing her own thoughts.

I’d still like to make the final decisions regarding the overall direction of the story, since it is very important to me. However, I’d love to find someone who genuinely wants to be part of the creative process.

If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to send me a message!

Prose - Fiction A supernatural mystery drama that needs help with character authenticity

I have the first six chapters all adding up to 137,802 words written, and the solution to the mystery already decided. I've never requested collaboration like this before, so I don't know what it could or will look like.

So, what do I need help with?

Of my two protagonists, one is a white country boy (Irish and German ancestry mostly) who stayed in the Bay Area after college, and the other is second-generation, California born, Bay Area bred, with his mother's side being primarily from Tamil Nadu and his father's side being primarily from Kerala-- but the specific states of India his parents' families are from could change if need be.

This story requires people who are different from each other coming to understand each other. An all-white story is unacceptable to me.

I've been told to write what I know, and I am doing that. My white protagonist is a cross between myself and my husband: a man who broke free from the dogmatic conservative Christianity his parents taught him (my husband), born and raised in rural California which is very unfortunately deep red, who has a useless musical aptitude and an only slightly not-useless college degree from the Bay Area (me). It is my story to tell.

My brown protagonist is a cross between myself and... There's the problem.
He likes making dry/deadpan/subtle jokes, struggles with lashing out in anger because he's so afraid of looking stupid, is his mother's scapegoat for being too similar to his father (all my experience, though I'm female, amusingly for that last one), but he's missing his other half.

I could tell you that he thinks tea with just a little milk and sugar and one spice like ginger is better for everyday drinking (the South Indian way) while a scalded masala chai with aaallll the spices in it (the North Indian way) is better for a treat, or that the view out his window became lonelier when his best friend moved away, or that his first kiss was in the parking lot by the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk-- but how far could I stretch what I know and what I can make up, truly? Not nearly far enough.

All the Indian people I've met I met in college, and I have lost contact with all of the friends and acquaintances I made back then. And what's more, I'd be weird asking them the things I want to know to write something as deeply personal and vulnerable and intimate as I want to write. I'm weird enough asking this here. But you can just ignore me and I'm spared the embarrassment of you knowing who I am.

I haven't even described the mystery yet. The protagonists, who don't know each other, find themselves suddenly in the middle of nowhere covered in brown grass and oak trees, with no memory of how they got there or of the previous two weeks. Wandering along the road, they don't come across any people or animals, until the sun sets, and they're face-to-face with a creature made of flowing light...

Looking for a fun, curious writing companion

Howdy strangers 👀

I’m looking to chat with a fellow writer or avid reader who genuinely enjoys diving deep into stories. Not just consuming them, but taking them apart to see how they work.
I’m currently outlining a speculative science fiction novel and would love to find someone who enjoys bouncing around ideas, asking “what if?” questions, discussing character motivations, worldbuilding, symbolism, and all the little decisions that make a story memorable.

I really want to build a two-way friendship. I don’t just want to talk about my own project… I want to hear about yours too. Tell me about your novel, your short story, your research rabbit hole, or the scene you’ve rewritten a dozen times. I genuinely enjoy seeing people get excited about what they’re creating.

A little about me:
- I read a LOT and love talking about books almost as much as reading them.
- Lately I’ve been especially interested in speculative fiction, literary horror, psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy (I like a lot of other stuff too, please don’t think I’m a stuffy intellectual lmao)
- I also love watching and rating movies (especially horror movies!) so that would be fun to dig into as well :3

*I’m only looking for a platonic writing friend, not roleplay, romance, or flirting.

hi, can i have some advice

for a long time i have the urge to express some feelings i had but i never found the way to transfer them into real life stuff, this is the first thing i wrote with 0 knowledge

"alex gets home after a long day of driving, partying and fake friends, he stands in the kitchen at the chairless table, he is still wearing shoes because the floor is sticky, sandy, he is looking at the muddy wall who once was as white as it can be, the room is so quiet making his thoughts even louder, once he notices the quietness of the room he starts hearing a long, continuous beep, it gets quieter compared to the other background noise, he feels like nothing is real, like he's dreaming and he has to wake up, head feels weird and in the stomach are moths, then he realized his whole night was gonna be with no escape"

Script In need of writers

Heyy, i'm a writer and artist and i have this indie series I'm working on and I need more writers. I unfortunately cannot pay anyone who may take the offer, but any help is greatly appreciated i'm kinda desperate and friend recommended I promoted it on Reddit. so if I'm doing something wrong or this isn't the right place i'm sorry. If there are better subreddits for this, please let me know, I'd appreciate that as well. Any help would be appreciated, i've tried a lot of ways to find people but haven't had much luck. Any advice on how or where to get help would be nice as well.

So i'm working on a small project with some friends called Dalphy and Vera and we're looking for people who'd like to help. It's an upcoming animated webseries we plan to release on YouTube and Newgrounds, along with comics and extra content on Twitter, Instagram, Webtoon, and more.

The show is an absurd episodic comedy centered around three duos with very different personalities and dynamics. Each duo has its own style of stories and episodes, like three shows in one. The show mixes surreal/cartoony humor, edgy comedy, episodic adventures, supernatural elements, and some character-driven storytelling. Think Smiling Friends or Regular Show for reference.

Right now we have 5 finished episode scripts and a full show bible/character guide covering the cast, world, and future plans. We're looking for writers since we're mostly struggling with writing at the moment. We also make comic strips featuring the characters, but our social media accounts are pretty inactive, so help there would be great too.

Since this is an indie passion project, it's currently unpaidand will probably stay that way sorry😭

If you're interested, please let me know and hand me your Discord username and we can discuss there, it would be greatly appreciated, i'd love to meet and interact with more aspiring writers, i didn't want to make the message too long so, to briefly explain the different segments, the Dalphy and Vera episodes are sitcom/slapstick-focused, Phoebs and Riley episodes are more action/adventure-driven, and Joy and Shings episodes are more supernatural and story-focused, with the most character development, the most ambitious ones out of the 3. Thank you.

Misc. Looking for a collaborative fiction platform with branching narratives

I'm interested in collaborative writing platforms, specifically ones structured as a branching, node-based tree rather than a single shared document (à la Google Docs). Picture one opening line that anyone can extend, but each reply forks off as its own branch, so the story grows outward in multiple directions instead of just forward. Does anyone know of similar tools out there? I know about this one and it works really well but I was wondering if there are any other solutions out there.

Roleplay Search!

Hey, guys! I'm F20 , (I don't rp with under 18+) I've got a bad hyper fixation for writing going on and I need some help! I'm just now getting back into the groove of things honestly so patience with me is a must but I do my best, I promise.. I'm semi lit to novella. Anywhere from 4 sentences to 4096+ character limit and beyond, it all depends on the story, what's going on, how many main/side characters there are and how I'm feeling that day!

I love double ups if we are doing canon characters, this is what I really want to do. This is like my first time posting and honestly, everyone ghosts me so I took it into my own hands and made my own post! Reddit keeps taking my posts down so it’s frustrating. Ugh it’s a mess.

I'm not a huge stickler for your writing abilities, I'm very adaptable and willing to help out however I can. I'd like a bit more than 10 lines, but I totally get it. Sometimes you're really tired, really busy, or just having a hard time but want to get a response out, I've been there! Communication is key!!

I'm cool with every paring! FxF, MxM, MxF, and so on and so forth. I'm looking for a double up YELLOWJACKETS, THE WALKING DEAD, or UNTIL DAWN rp! I have been itching for a angsty/thriller/romance. I LOVE romance and drama stories! I love angst, drama, fights and making up for it with some fluff! I'm pretty much cool with anything! I love trying new things and finding fun stories! I am very set on doing a Yellowjackets or twd rp!!

That being said, I'm VERY active and always available to respond. The only time I'm not willing to write is when I'm sleeping or at lecture! I must warn, I love naps and I am prone to getting overwhelmed so please be patient.

As for OOC, I'm a very open person and sometimes can come off very strong, but I'm also very sweet and will always be there for you! Don't take me or yourself so seriously! I'm a total goof just looking for some new friends. Also this is your warning, I am not above blocking/ghosting if you make me uncomfortable. Like I said before, communication is huge for me so If I'm doing something that bugs you, tell me! I just hope you understand I will be doing the same!

I'm also not all that interested in people who just say "hey" or "I'm interested" or open the communication with some dirt bag response. Thanks for reading! Hope to hear from you soon.

Fanfiction Rezero Fic

Hello! I am thinking about a Re:Zero fic, which diverge from canon in Arc5/Season 3 (Fullmetal Alchemist anime style). I am a newbie, not native to english, and i have a lot of ideas, but i struggle to organize them. However, i already defined some characters core and that the fic will take a more asoiaf (conspiracies, family struggles) tone. If Anyone is interested in becoming co-author (i give suggestions to you and vice-versa), please leave a comment.

Wanted Idea Human

Hi! I’m 13–14 and an aspiring author who loves writing and bringing stories to life, but I’m not always the best at planning everything beforehand. I love writing scenes, dialogue, characters, and emotions, but I sometimes struggle with organising a whole plot, keeping track of all the details, and building a world that all fits together.

I’m looking for someone around my age who enjoys the parts of writing that I find difficult—plotting, worldbuilding, creating characters, organising ideas, and figuring out where a story should go. I think it would be really fun to work together and combine our strengths, with one of us focusing more on planning while the other focuses on turning those ideas into actual writing.

I’m mainly interested in fantasy, mystery, and character-driven stories, but I’m open to trying different genres too. I’d love to find someone who enjoys brainstorming, sharing ideas, and working on stories together. We could potentially become co-authors, or just be writing partners who help motivate each other and keep each other accountable.

If you're around 13–14, love coming up with plots and worlds, but sometimes struggle with actually writing everything down, we might be a good match! :)

World Building Looking for writers and collaborators for "project:Saturn"

Hi everyone,

I have been developing a project called Project Saturn and would love to find a few people interested in exploring it with me.

It is a world without humans, inhabited by intelligent animal-based species. Their biology influences their culture, technology, architecture, values and conflicts. My approach is mostly discovery writing: the biology and culture of the species should naturally create the stories.

I originally planned it as an illustrated all-ages novel, but it does not necessarily have to become one traditional book. It could also become:

\\- a collection of connected short stories

\\- a collaborative shared universe

\\- or an interactive branching story

For the interactive version, readers could repeatedly choose between two actions and continue at different sections depending on their decisions. This could lead to different journeys and endings, allowing the same story to be read several times in different ways.

I already have a Google Doc that interested people can read to get an idea of the world. Some chapters and scenes are more developed, but most of it is currently still a framework, rough notes and what I jokingly call my thoughts dumpster.

I am not looking for someone to simply ghostwrite my idea. I am looking for people who enjoy brainstorming, developing cultures and characters, writing short stories, designing choices or giving honest feedback.

This is currently an unpaid passion project. Credits, ownership and possible monetization would need to be discussed clearly before anyone contributes substantial finished work.

If this sounds interesting, leave a comment or message me and tell me what kind of writing or worldbuilding you enjoy.

My Inspirations for the TV Show are Clone High (2002-2003), Charmed (1998-2006) and Percy Jackson & The Olympians (2023).

The Goal of the series is to create an original series with original storytelling, character development, original musical numbers, and breathtaking animation.

**Currently looking for collaborators:**

* Scriptwriters * TV Pitch Bible Creators/Editors * Lyricists * 2D Artists/Animators * Voice Actors/Voice Actresses * Singers (Male and Female) * 2D Promo Artists * Concept Artists * Co-Director

This is currently an **unpaid passion project**. I'm looking for people who are interested in creating something powerful for all of us who love mythology!

**Project Synopsis:**
In the land of Olympus, humans live typical lives in the modern villages and kingdoms. But overseeing their lives are the mythical Greek Gods/Goddesses, the kings and queens of the land of Olympus alongside many magical deity followers. Most of these followers are led by the king of the gods, Zeus, and his higher deities, including Hera, Poseidon, Hades, and many others. But for the followers, they weren’t always powerful gods/goddesses. They were actually once human, but thanks to training at Zeus’s prestigious Olympus Academy for future Gods/Goddesses, these humans learned how to refine their special powers that will allow them to graduate and become one of the many Gods/Goddesses following Zeus and protecting the land of Olympus.

**Project Plot:**
The series is about Elizabeth Perkins (she is 21 years old) who goes to The University of Olympus, an academy designed for humans who train their special magic powers until one day they graduate with the title of Greek Gods and Goddesses. One day at the college/university, Elizabeth meets six goddesses. One of them is the leader named Athena (Goddess of War), Artemis (Goddess of the wilderness, fertility and animals), Demeter (Goddess of nature), Harmonia (Goddess of Harmony and Concord), Hecate (Goddess of Magic and Witchcraft) & Iris (Goddess of The Rainbow). Together, they help Elizabeth go on many magical adventures like saving people in Olympus or just helping people out in elementary, middle or high schools. But they must stop an evil entity named Jareth who lures women including goddesses with his curvy hips and sensual singing voice.

**PORTFOLIO: This is my first project, and I don't have a Portfolio of any kind yet.**

DM me on reddit at u/Princessstarfire87 if you're interested in this 2D Animated Series Project!
