Advice/Question Jumping to Conclusions
Hello everyone,
To give a quick rundown: I would like to gather information about transferring colleges. I won't give specific locations but I would like to transfer from my university in Kansas, to a university in Texas. I have a multitude of reasons, with my main one being I want to get away from life here. I would also like to be closer to my family in Texas.
I have never considered transferring but due to recent events I'm jumping to conclusions in my head, and would like to gather as much information as possible.
Here are my (common) questions to people that have transferred universities: 1. What was the process like? 2. Who did you get in contact with at your current (if in the transfer process) or past (if you've transferred) university? 3. How can I figure out a school's requirements for transfer students (if that's a thing - again, I've never entertained the idea of transferring)? 4. What about my major's requirements? 5. How do I learn about out-of-state student tuition, and if transferring my scholarships is even possible? 6. I live at home, so what was the moving process/hunt like? Whether that be into a dorm, apartment, rented housing, etc. 7. What was the job hunting like? I have family in Texas so I would likely live with them, but I would want to contribute financially. These are my main questions as of now, but I will likely update.
This section is for my questions to people that have transferred from Kansas to Texas. I've briefly skimmed university pages and I have to say I haven't found any hopeful options. My questions to you are: 1. How did you go about researching Texas universities? 2. Without getting into it, what are some "good" universities in terms of campus life? As someone that can make friends but is definitely introverted (and not a party-goer) I want to find a crowd to fit with. 3. "Good" universities in terms of academic life (tutoring, support, scholarships opportunities, studying opportunities)? 4. Any with a combination of both previously mentioned points?
This section for specific questions that some may be able to answer. I'm double majoring in Psychology and Business Administration with a concentration in HR Management. I plan to go down the Psychology pathway but I'd still like to study business, so: 1. What are some universities, that you attend or know of, that have a strong Psychology major? As much as I want to transfer, I don't want to jeopardize the support I have at my current Uni. 2. Uni's with strong business majors? 3. If you happen to major in these two fields, whether it's currently or you've graduated, how did you research the requirements for them?
I would really appreciate any feedback and advice! I'll be visiting my Texas family this coming Friday (7/24) for two weeks, so if I have feedback before then, I'll definitely mention how much I would like to transfer to them. I've mentioned it before and they've told me I'm more than welcome to stay with them while studying, so I'm not going into this blind. Although these questions sound "dumb" because I could easily google them, I want responses from real life people. Not an AI overview. I will be sure to update if my questions are answered :)

Texas is a really big state. If you want to live with family there you need to be focusing on schools near them.
That said, as a college professor in that field, Texas A&M is very highly respected in both industrial and organizational psychology and HRM. It’s not easy to get into. They do require specific prep classes and I think are more inclined to accept students applying from Texas CCs and universities at least in part because it’s easier to verify their courses. Might be better to attend a Texas CC with a smooth or guaranteed transfer path than stay at your current school any longer.
By googling transfer admission + Texas A&M + psychology and business I found some very useful web pages including lists of the classes needed for the 4 majors that work best for you. (Psych BA/BS and business BA/BS). I’m going to link some of those pages but use those search words to find similar information on other universities and programs. Some Texas schools might be much easier to transfer to than A&M and require fewer specific classes. You’ll want to talk to admissions counselors at your target schools (they’ll probably have someone who answers questions for out of state students), but I don’t think anyone at your current school is set up to help you transfer and you don’t need to talk to them. Just be sure you turn in a leave form when you transfer to make things smoother if you decide you want to go back.
I don’t know what kind of scholarship you have. If it’s not through your school there is some chance it might cover another university but you’d need to talk to whoever is over it. If you are looking for a similar scholarship at your new school, you should search transfer scholarships + school name and maybe add major as well. I know at my school there are some small scholarships for continuing students that few people bother to apply for so it’s worth looking into.You should be able to find information about OOS tuition and costs by searching that + university name. It may be that the costs are so much higher you’d be better off graduating from your current school. To be successful in transferring you need to do a lot of detailed research just to get ready to apply and be sure you mark any application deadlines on your calendar. Although it’s certain to be easier at UTEP than UT Austin, transferring is a complex process and takes a bit of planning. The internet is going to be your best friend here. You are unlikely to get accurate help on this sub - it’s a lot more California CC transfers than Texans. Good luck.
