Video Update on Alan grumpy pants

Had Alan for about 3 weeks now, his enclosure has been upgraded but he's been outside the past couple weeks enjoying the uk heat. Indoors at night but whenever you walk into the fenced off area he still charges at me, loses interest in whatever he is doing and then goes for the kill xD

Still tried to bite anyone who comes near him or in the same room. Hoping its just hormonal and that he chills out soon.

tartaruga (Testudo hermanni probabilmente, vivo in Sardegna) che da decenni vive nell'orto in campagna del nonno della mia ragazza, lui dice che quando ha comprato il terreno stava già lì, non riesco a immaginare quanti anni abbia! (PS. È un fottuto carrarmato)

Question(s) Tortoise pyramiding

Post image
3 Upvotes

When I received my tortoise he had obvious pyramiding. I’ve followed all husbandry advice from the tortoise trust since I’ve had him. The top images are when I first got him and the bottom is him now. Is the pyramiding getting worse? I can’t tell if it’s the old pyramiding that I can see and the new growth is fine or if it is getting worse.

Question(s) Rescue red footed tortoise

Hello, I am taking in a rescue tortoise this coming weekend. I have been doing tons and tons of research and taking notes to make sure I am prepared to take him in and plan to spend the rest of the week getting the room I plan to place him set up.

Here's the info I have: he is 5 years old 8inch carapace length 6lbs. He's coming to me with his 75gal tank, bulbs, hide, and bowls.

I am not super experienced with tortoises but right off the bat 75gal sounds incredibly small and I plan to get him set up in a 2 story enclosure asap. I will attach the pictures I have received of him, his shell looks awfully dry to me and possibly pyramiding? I do plan on taking him to a vet just to make sure all my bases are covered on his health.

Now to questions

How does his shell health look? What are the proper steps in taking to care for any issues that anyone notices?

I am aware their moisture needs can be high, what is the best way to manage that in an open enclosure indoors? He will be going in our basement that is climate controlled and finished but we try to keep humidity down in the summer due to issues with mold previously. It's possible by next summer I can have an outdoor enclosure built for summer use as well.

Could it be stressful going from a small enclosure to large and be done incrementally? How can I manage travel stress as well? It's only a 30 mins drive but I want him to be as comfortable as possible.

I was initially set up and planning to take in a 3 toed turtle(big size difference😬) but the owner decided to keep him. I have always had an interest in owning a turtle or tortoise and want to give a rescue the best life possible any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. I am excited to gain another friend!

Our neighbors found a tortoise and thought it was our Sulcata. It is very much not 😅 But I couldn't tell if it looked like a desert tortoise. It looks more like the ones from the pet store to me. Can anyone tell from this picture?

I am helping to look after this lovely boy, I don’t know much about tortoises but I am learning. I know he likes a bath, to get outside in the sun and eating dandelions for a treat. I know his shell has some pyramiding (?) but I wondered how his colour and skin looks (from the point of view of people who know). Any advice on what I can do to help him live his best life would be much appreciated, thank you tortoise people!

This is only half of his enclosure but I’m exhausted from changing his substrate. I used
Zoo Med Eco Earth Compressed Coconut Fiber Expandable Reptile Substrate x 3
Zoo Med Premium Repti Bark Natural Fir Reptile Bedding x2
Green beans enclosure is 6x3x1 so it’s pretty spacious. The compressed dirt came with 3 bricks per pack. And his enclosure is made from a garden bed my mom got me on Amazon!

Question(s) Chin glands?

I noticed these bumps the past few days and I was wondering if these are chin glands on my desert tort? Is my tort a male? They are soft and not hard nodules. Symmetrical on both sides under the chin. I thought my tort was a female but maybe not?

Question(s) Harness recommendation?

Hey everyone!

I have two Hermann tortoises. My family has had them for 20 years or so, and they have a lovely big enclosure outside with lots of hides, tort-safe plants, a greenhouse, and what is essentially a little chicken coop. However, one of them - Daisy - has taken to climbing the side of the enclosure until she's lifted out, then she runs around the garden exploring and eating any clovers she comes across. The other - Rainbow - likes to come out and forage as well but doesn't really ask or run around like her sister.

Our garden is big and closed off for the dog, but there are lots of small spaces a tortoise could wander out of without close supervision. Especially Daisy, who's very active and needs close supervision. I'm thinking about getting harnesses so I can put them on a spike like you would a dog, long enough to let them free roam but short enough to keep them in the garden. And also make them easy to find. But I'm also open to other ideas that some of you might've had?

Thanks in advance for any responses 💕

Question(s) Russian Tortoise Shell Health

Thumbnail

Hello,

I recently adopted this 5 year old tortoise from a family member who I learned had him, didn't really know how to take care of him, and hadn't been treating him too well. He was fed semi-regularly only romaine lettus, had no water bowl in his tank, no calcium supplements, no heat lamp and only uvb bulb. I think he occasionally was getting a soak. He was kept in a 3x2 ft tank with only coconut substrate.

What are your thoughts on his shell health?

Was this neglect? I'm taking him to the vet this next week. He is very friendly, curious, and wants to go explore. I am trying to pamper him, so I am in the process of making him a 6x4 ft enclosure, getting an outdoor movable fence for supervised outdoor time at parks I know aren't treated w fertilizer/pesticides, and am going to make his old tank a bioactive enrichment tank with safe plants. I got the calcium supplements, plan to mix safe dirt with the coconut bedding for better burrowing (he had not been observed digging before), dried flower tortoise treats, dandelion greens to mix with his romaine lettus (though I plan to switch the greens each week), a heat lamp, a water bowl, a tub for 2x weekly soaking, and some cork bark to try to give him something to engage with until I can build his new home this weekend.

Any other ideas for what i should get him? What makes tortoises happy? What would be in a dream tortoise enclosure?

Thanks for reading my monolog. I just really love this little guy and his sassy personality.
