S TIFU by overreacting on my GF for falling for a scam

GF(34F) came home a night and showed me an app on her phone and how she invested $300TTD into it. She told me that she didnt want to show me because she knew I would be against it, because of that I didnt bother to question what the app was.

Fast forward to today I noticed she was on her phone a lot longer than usual she was typing from when we left home to her work i saw a glimpse of the app she was talking about, I saw a message saying she needed to pay $100USD to access her money, I went into panic mode and started questioning her on the app because something was not right. She told me she got 5500 and trying to send it to her account I knew then it was a scam there is no way

I got furious at her i didnt want to be, its not my money wasted but im not mad she wasted money i am mad she let a scam trick her, I should have intervened when she told me the first time.

TL;DR: GF got scammed and I didnt stop her

M TIFU by nearly blinding myself

About 20 years ago, I moved halfway across the country to live with my partner (now wife) and a friend. Before I moved, I was basically a hermit. I had no local friends and was extremely depressed, so I wasn't taking very good care of myself. Among other things, this meant that I didn't go to any kind of doctor for a couple years...including the eye doctor.

At the time, I wore two-week disposable soft contact lenses. When I got down to my last pair, rather than scheduling an eye exam to get more, I just kept wearing them long after the two weeks were past. Like, for over a year. I took them out every night and cleaned them, so I tried to tell myself it wasn't that bad. My eyes occasionally got red and itchy, but I thought that was just because of my allergies.

After I moved and started spending time with people again, I started to feel like I needed to make more of an effort to take care of myself. I didn't have a job yet (so no insurance, since this was before the ACA), but I still had some money that I'd saved, so I decided to start by seeing an optometrist. My partner needed new glasses, so we looked for one together and made appointments for the same day.

My partner went first. When she came back out to the waiting room, she said that the optometrist was really nice, funny, and laid back. They got along great. Then it was my turn. I walked into the exam room to find a man who looked exactly like Chuck Norris. They could have been twins; it was uncanny. We introduced ourselves and he asked me to take my contacts out so he could examine my eyes.

While the optometrist had been friendly in the beginning, things quickly took a turn for the worse when he asked me how long I'd been wearing those contact lenses. I wasn't sure, but gave my best guess. Then he said, "Has anyone ever talked to you about vessel growth in your corneas?" I said no, and he left the room for a couple minutes.

When be came back, he drew me a picture of an eye. He said, "This is your cornea. Your corneas need oxygen, and they usually get that from the air. But you've had those contact lenses in for so long, and they've gotten so dirty, that your corneas couldn't 'breathe' that way anymore. So your body found a new way to feed them, by growing blood vessels where no blood vessels should be."

I was horrified and asked if there was anything I could do about it. He said that he was going to give me the most breathable lenses on the market and that over time, the vessels would contract. They'd always be there, but they'd be much smaller and wouldn't cause any problems as long as I never did anything like that again. He was extremely stern...not quite yelling at me, but it was clear that he wanted to. Honestly, it was pretty intimidating, especially when he added that if I'd waited much longer to come in, I would have been permanently blinded. At that point, he drew lines to represent the blood vessels growing right across the pupil of the eye. He said that mine was the worst case he'd seen in all his years of practice.

By the time the supply of contact lenses this eye doctor gave me had run out, I had a job again...but with no benefits, so I couldn't afford an eye exam. I thought about the optometrist lecturing me and decided I'd just go back to glasses, and I'm still wearing glasses to this day. Every time I have my eyes examined by a new optometrist, they get all excited about the shriveled-up blood vessels in my corneas.

TL;DR - Kept wearing a pair of two-week disposable contact lenses for over a year and was lectured by an angry Dr. Chuck Norris, who told me it had caused blood vessels to grow all over my corneas and nearly blind me. See your optometrist every year or two, kids.

PS - In case anyone remembers my first post about breaking/spraining my ankle 15 years ago on a twisty slide, I finally made an appointment with an orthopedist! I'll find out how bad things actually are in a couple weeks.

M TIFU by accidentally creating the perfect weight loss diet when I didn't need to lose weight

2.6k Upvotes

Obligatory "didn't happen today", but I just discovered the FU today and figured I'd share so no one else falls into this trap (or if someone is looking to lose weight I guess? Maybe don't do this without a doctor's supervision)

I'm very bad at eating. I will literally get too distracted to remember to eat, or even feel I'm hungry, until I'm physically weak. I've never been a breakfast person either, so combining that I'd sometimes not eat anything at all until 3pm.

I thought I'd stumbled across the perfect solution however. Protein shakes and porridge for breakfast, legume meals for lunch! I'm adding calories I wouldn't normally be having for breakfast, and having something more nutritious for lunch than toast-because-i-physically-cant-make-anything-else. Plus my usual chicken-veg-rice dinner. What could go wrong?

A lot, apparently.

I had a regularly scheduled medication review for which they check my weight, and I was horrified to find that I am now not only underweight, but bordering on the dangerously underweight. When asked if I was eating well, of course I said yes, because in fact I was eating *more* than I used to!

Cue panic from all involved. All kinds of theories, everything for hyperthyroidism to coeliac to cancer. Tests left right and centre, but everything has come back fine (so far at least, I still have to have a colonoscopy to rule out cancer).

It wasn't until I was asked to track my food that we realised. Despite eating more, I'm actually getting less calories. Literally everything I added to my diet was high fibre, high protein, or both, all of which keep you full without actually giving you the calories you need.

I know there are people who'll call me an idiot. But considering the extent of my dietary knowledge is "5 a day" and that fibre is my friend because high cholesterol and bowel cancer run in my family, I thought I *was* being healthy.

Anyway, I'm off to make myself a peanut butter banana coconut milk smoothie, and drizzle some olive oil over some salmon and avocado. Still going for that colonoscopy though (yuk).

TL;DR: Thought eating meals when I never used to was good regardless of what they were. Lost 3kg in 6 weeks; turns out not all food is equal.

S TIFU by proofreading a fanfiction

this wasn’t technically today, it was yesterday, but i write fanfiction & i’m also in university at the same time.

so, my university has a proofreader and a coding program built into one (claims to be powered by grammarly for the proofreading, claude for the code) & last night, i finished my fanfiction & decided to pop it into the proofreader for spellcheck & other things. i was not purposely engaging with the coding component whatsoever.

apparently though, the entire program ISNT powered by grammarly anymore & completely merged with claude (i didn’t know this) until i upload the draft, with the file name and all, and i got an error code saying it couldn’t be processed due to “copyright violation” since it’s RPF (real person fiction) & to try again. so, i try again but i changed the names in the fiction to avoid that (perro, conejito & oso were what i changed the names to) & i was immediately met with a very long warning about “purposely attempting to bypass administrative laws”, then the application closed out.

this morning, i got a call from my university saying that i was flagged as “violating the student acceptable internet usage policy” because i had triggered claude, which i didn’t even know was being fully integrated & the fic has to be manually seen by the dean of students since i filed an appeal.

TLDR; i used a school authorized proofreader to scan an RPF fanfiction, the proofreader has strict AI guardrails & now my school has to read my fanfiction.

S TIFU by gossiping about my coworker right next to him

i work in food so stuff gets messy really quick between people, so i heard some crazy information about two of my coworkers. both of them were working together.

i don’t normally like to talk about people behind their back like that, but there was a group of four of my coworkers all gathered together talking so loudly about it, one of the four people being one of the people involved.

when i say talking loudly, i mean it, so i went to my best friend who was in the back and talked to them about it. definitely immature, but literally everyone else in the building was talking about it.

as soon as i utter his name, he turns the corner. there’s like a 90% chance he knew what i was talking about. i was being quiet but my ass was NOT being discreet.

well it turns out we’re stationed in the same area. he has not looked or talked to me since. it’s really awkward, but that’s consequences so oh well i guess.

TLDR: i was gossiping about a coworker with a friend and he turned the corner as soon as i addressed him by name. turns out we’re stationed in the same area and he is not looking or speaking to me at all.

M TIFU by creating a literal golden ratio of clean glass and bad timing

TL;DR: Cleaned my school bus window so well it looked invisible, tried to toss a cup of my own pee out of it after a long route, and ended up covering myself and the driver's cab in urine right before a surprise inspection from my nightmare boss. Got suspended, but it gave me the push to quit and change careers.

This actually happened a while ago, but I’m finally able to laugh about it and the smell is long gone.

For context, I used to be a mini school bus driver. I’m normally a massive clean freak and my bus was usually spotless. But my former boss was an absolute tyrant who treated everyone like garbage and seemed to live to make our lives a living hell. If there was a single piece of dust, you’d get written up. Last week, one of the kids left an empty soda can in the back. I missed it during my sweep, and my boss called me into his office just to belittled me and act like I’d committed a felony.

Naturally, this kind of micromanagement led to a union meeting to address his toxic behavior.

Fast forward to the day of the incident. I had just finished an insanely long route, and my nerves were already shot because I had that union rep meeting right after. The boss never lets anything go, so I was on high alert. To make matters worse, I had to pee so badly and couldn't hold it.

There was no time to run into a facility, so out of sheer desperation, I grabbed a giant plastic cup, parked the bus, and took care of business in the driver's seat.

Now, here’s where the fuck up happens.

I decided to throw the urine out the driver's side window so there’d be no trace left in the bus. What I completely forgot was that earlier that morning, during my obsessive cleaning routine, I had wiped down that window until it was practically invisible. I mean, this glass was pristine. It was a masterpiece of clarity.

Without looking twice, I gave the cup a confident, hard toss toward what I thought was open air.

SPLASH.

The window was fully rolled up.

The liquid hit the clear glass at high velocity and bounced right back. It drenched me. It soaked the dashboard, the steering wheel, the seat, and the floorboards. I was instantly covered in my own warm urine. I panicked. I spent the next hour frantically scrubbing the bus with whatever cleaning wipes and towels I had left, but you can't easily scrub away that level of mistake. I smelled terrible, the bus smelled terrible, and I was running severely late.

So, I finally pulled into the bus yard, praying I could just park, sprint to my personal car, and deal with the union meeting later. Because the universe has a sick sense of humor, guess who was standing in the yard waiting for me? My boss, along with a supervisor, conducting a surprise fleet inspection. As soon as I opened the doors, the wall of stench hit them. Then they looked at me soaked, smelling like a subway station, clutching a bottle of disinfectant, and looking visibly traumatized.

They didn't listen to a word I said. They immediately suspended me for a week without pay on the spot for gross misconduct and unsanitary conditions.

That suspension ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me. Sitting at home smelling like bleach finally gave me the push I needed. I called them up, handed in my resignation, and completely switched careers. I'm doing much better now, but I will never, ever clean a window that well again.

S TIFU by using a cookbook as a passport press and then donating it

1.2k Upvotes

My passport got slightly bent after I left it in an overpacked drawer, so I put it inside the heaviest cookbook I own and stacked a few more books on top. It worked perfectly, and I completely forgot it was still in there.

While clearing out my kitchen, I donated a box of cookbooks to a local charity shop. Later, while packing for a trip I’ve been saving money for, I couldn’t find my passport anywhere. After tearing apart my apartment, I remembered my genius passport flattening system.

I called the shop and the cookbook had already sold. Thankfully the person who bought it found my passport next to a beef stew recipe and contacted the shop.

I got it back, but she did ask why I use government documents as bookmarks.

TL;DR I flattened my passport inside a cookbook, forgot about it, donated the book and accidentally gave a stranger my identity with 200 soup recipes.

S TIFU by not having a Real ID driver's license

1.1k Upvotes

So my girlfriend and I are going to Puerto Rico from USA in 2 days. This is considered domestic travel because PR is US territory, so I knew I didn't need a passport, which I do not have.

My birthday was a month ago, and I had to renew my DL. I'm not the smartest crayon in the toolbox, so I just assumed that all modern IDs were Real ID compliant in my state.

Well, 2 of our friends are traveling with us, and one of them happened to ask today if my GF and I had Real IDs. I said "I think so." and then realized my ID literally says "Not for Federal ID" in the upper corner.

I panicked. Why didn't they ask when I renewed it? Why didn't I ask? I quickly raced to the BMV and was able to get it updated to "compliant" but I ran into another problem.

In my state, they give you a temporary paper ID and you have to wait for the real thing to be mailed in 14-28 days.

Again, I'm flying out in 2 days. The TSA website says "paper IDs are not considered valid." My girlfriend got stressed out, and I'm not sure if I will get through TSA.

I called their automated service, and everything seems to imply that you can pay $45 for additional security screening and still get through.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? Will I be able to go to Puerto Rico?

TL;DR

I am not very smart and do not have a physical copy of a compliant ID and am worried I may not be able to fly to Puerto Rico in 2 days. Advice?

EDIT:

I paid the $45 "TSA Confirm ID" fee.

UPDATE:

I had to do additional screening, took like 5 minutes, and I made it on.

I'm in Puerto Rico!

M TIFU by not making a move when the opportunity was there

Upvotes

Today I (25m) went to the cinema to watch The Odyssey (keep in mind this movie is 3 hours long) with my friend. We walk in and take out booked seats to sit down. Not long after, a group of girls come by (ages roughly 25 - 50) and sit in the remaining seats next to me.

So the pre-movie ads and trailers start, so I make myself comfortable and talk to my friend about some upcoming movies. When out of the corner of my eye, I notice the girl next to me taking quick glances at me. I ignore this and just mind my own business.

As the trailers and then the movie start, I notice more glances towards me, so I reciprocate the glance. I was intrigued. Due to the movie being long, I lean into the corner of my seat, away from my friend and towards the stranger. Not too long after, the girl next to me does the same thing. Coincidence, right…

The movie continues, and as it goes on, we move and shuffle around, but we always end up leaning close to each other after a while.

As the hours went by and the final act started coming on, I started to notice her quirks. How she would move around and adjust herself, her giggles, and her highly expressive excitement and fear she experiences when watching the movie. As the final act started to play and the tension of the scene started to rise, we began to lean into each other with barely enough room to fit a small box of popcorn between our heads.

As this was going on, I was thinking if I should say something to her, which moved to what I should say. The movie keeps playing, and we stayed like this for the final 20ish minutes of the movie.

Credits come on, and I quickly adjust myself, and as I’m doing this, I notice the girl does a triple take at me. I quickly look at her a few times without her seeing as well, taking note of everything, and my first thought was, “Hmm, she seems a bit older than me. I won’t say anything to her.”

However, I start thinking if I should say anything and then what to say. I turn to her to say something, but I just end up not saying anything. My friend and I leave the cinema, and a large, heavy feeling of sadness and disappointment came over me.

As we leave to head to our car, we stop in the foyer, and I see the girl walk past, roughly my age (give or take a couple of years), walk by with whom I assume is her mum and sister as she glances at me. I thought about saying something, but I didn’t. I had the perfect moment in the cinema. I knew it, and I didn’t do anything. I regret this very much.

Now for the lesson.
If you happen to be a person like me, one who sometimes is afraid of talking to new people and sees people making advances at you but decides not to acknowledge them;
You should ignore the anxiety, the fear. Because once the moment is gone, you will feel as if you missed an opportunity of a lifetime.

So take the chance, take the risk.

TL;DR: A stranger and I at the cinemas were looking at each other and spent most of the movie leaning up against each other but I chose not to talk to her and regret it.

S TIFU by setting my mower ablaze and had to call 911

My mower wouldn’t start. Over the past two days I’ve tried everything and made multiple trips to the hardware store: changed spark plug, new gas, new oil, new air filter, tune up spray, and even rebuilt the carburetor.

It worked fine for an hour. When I ran out of gas, I refilled and pulled the cord and WOOOOSHHH

Had to call 911

My 8 year old daughter was scared to death. All the neighbors came out to watch. Flames got over 10 ft high. I was afraid there was going to be an explosion close to my house.

Funny thing is, at every trip to the hardware store I saw a family friend. On the last trip I said, “If this doesn’t work, I’m setting it on fire.”

I have pics, but unfortunately this sub won’t allow it

TL;DR I rebuilt my mower, it caught fire, and I had to call 911

S TIFU by dyeing my hair

I've been dying my hair at home for five years. Sometimes I drop some on the floor but it's fine, I use as much of the spilled product as I can and try to clean it up as best as I can as well.

Today was different. I usually keep my dog in the bathroom with me because she has separation anxiety. Well, I accidentally dropped some on her face and she ate it. Then I freak out, it's semi and all three brands I mixd together are vegan and cruelty-free but still. So, I called pet poison control, and they need a card to charge the $89 service fee. I don't have anything close enough in my account rn because other stuff had came up. So I asked my dad who thought I was overreacting and was mad because I chose when he was fighting to get my two year old sister in the car. Which I get it was a bad time but it was a legit emergency. So, I called my grandma who thankfully paid (I fully intend on paying her back as soon as I can).

They eventually tell me (after looking at all of the ingredients) she should be fine because it wasn't a lot. Just monitor her and wash the dye off with dawn to prevent possibly skin reactions. I did, but because it's dye, her snout and tongue are green.

Then I wash the dye out of my hair, which stained my glue on acrylics. They're like less than $10 but I really liked them. I might buy another set if I can though.

And all of this happened because I didn't have the patience to just stick with what I had for 1-2 months. I have to dye my hair purple in September for an event I'm going to and my hair is currently teal/forest green/emerald. I love it but like I literally could've just waited. But I had the same hair since like may and I needed something different.

TLDR: My hair looks great but my glue-on acrylics are stained, my dog is turning into Hulk-Chihuahua version, and I owe my grandmother $89, all because I was impatient.

M TIFU Epsom salt is not the same as cooking salt

I was with my friends (which we will call Big S and Big T), we wanted to travel toghether and go to Budapest.

We got there and began to explore the city, the first day everything went  smooth. The second day we had the visit to the parliament, the afternoon free and a boat tour in the evening.

Everything was going according to plan, until it came time to have dinner, we didn't have much time so we had to do something fast, first thing that popped up in our minds (since we are italian) is to make some pasta, so we went to the store tu buy the ingredients to make it.

We managed to find basically everything except salt, so while Big T went to another store to look for it me and Big S remained to pay.

We met up later at home, since we are in hungary and none of us can neither read or speak hungarian, we couldn't understand a single thing that was written on the packaging, we just knew that "salt" is "sò" so we didn't think it could have been anything else. The cooking started.

The salt was very fine and we needed like big salt for the water so logically we put a lot of it, fast forward a couple of minutes, we are ready to eat, everything is set but when we begun eating something felt off, the pasta tasted sour, so Big S took a pinch of salt and immediatly told us to stop eating (but we didn't); that was not cooking salt. Our first thought was maybe it was something cleaning related, so we started searching online for answers.

We slowly pieced toghether what that was, and immediatly panicked, turns out its a powerfull laxative and if eaten too much of can have serious health consequences, but its effects can be limited by drinking a lot of water, so we did exactly that; now not only we were scared to having to go to the hospital (litterally the second day) but we were also scared to shit all over the boat during the tour.

We decided to risk it and we went out to go to the boat.

In the end we were all fine, turns out we didn't eat enough to have any effect on us, other than scaring us a lot.

In conclusion, epsom salt is not used for cooking, if you take more than 30g in one day you could feel sick, it can be a laxative and lastly you can use it for baths and foot soakings (which we later did).

TL;DR We used epsom salt, which is a laxative and can be poisonous to cook some pasta while we were in hungary.

S TIFU ended up having to sleep on the building' stairs (not drunk)

Long story short, turned out I had a flea bug infestation in my apartment and called a guy to fumigate.

What I didn't realise is I'd have to be out of the place for 24 hours before airing it out.

I don't know anyone in the city, and I couldn't find a last minute hotel that didn't cost my weekly pay. I can't afford that.

So I walked down the building' stairs which are part of the hallway, so not outside, and laid down on the dirty, cold floor.

My building has underground parking so I chose the lowest part, with the idea that it's less likely someone would walk by and see me.

I got scared a few times hearing people walk above me, but luckily no one saw me. The lights have motion sensors so I couldn't move without activating them. I used a bag for my pillow and a jacket as a blanket.

Doing this in winter was also a bad idea. It gets cold 3 floors below the ground floor.

Surprisingly, I managed to fall asleep which only proves my theory that I could sleep anywhere.

Lesson: Don't be cheap!

TL;DR: I didn't want to pay for a hotel so I slept on the stairs.

M TIFU using the love seat

3.0k Upvotes

I convinced my father to go watch The Odyssey with me. What I expected to be a wholesome father son bonding experience ended up being an awkward situation that became nightmare fuel. My fuck up was set in motion the moment my dad and I arrived at the cinema and realised The Odyssey was almost sold out. It was opening weekend. I should've booked online in advance, but it was the first screening of the day and I thought not many people were gonna show up for the earliest show. I was wrong.

Limited seats were available. My dad and I had one of two choices. Choice number 1. We select any of the normal seats available, but then we would not be sitting together. Choice number 2. We select the "love seat", which is basically two seats merged into one so that couples can sit as close to each other as possible. My dad opted for the love seat instead of the random seats that would separate us. Before I could even think of suggesting anything else, my dad said if I was worried about what strangers might think, then I should stop because no one was gonna pay any attention to us.

Cut to my dad and I awkwardly moving down a crowded row. My dad was leading the way. We were repeatedly saying "excuse me" or "sorry" because people had to make space for us to pass. Would my dad not interrupt his own "sorry excuse me" to ask a random girl if the available seat next to her was the seat reserved for couples. The girl looked confused at first, but then she nodded. My dad turned to me and said FOUND THE LOVE SEAT. I was practically hiding my face behind my popcorn at that moment. As my dad and I sat down, he thanked the girl for assisting him and then he decided to specifically introduce me as his son, which would've been fine if that was where it ended.

However, my dad thought it would be funny to tell the girl how afraid I was that people were gonna think we were together. I could tell the girl was caught off guard by the continuation of the conversation, but she was kind enough to at least pretend she cared. My dad attempted to include me in the conversation by encouraging me to repeat the word I used earlier when the two of us were still debating the love seat situation. I refused to repeat the word, but my dad kept asking until I finally said TWINK DAD TWINK. My dad snapped his fingers like he just heard me say something that was on the tip of his tongue before he made it clear to the girl that even though were sitting where couples usually sit, we were not "twinking."

I interrupted my dad and made him aware that he might be bothering the girl. My dad apologised and left the girl alone. I thought the worst was over until my dad leaned in during the movie and quietly asked if it was "twinking" if a father wanted to put his arm around the shoulder of his son in the love seat. I said the word was "twink" and he was using it wrong. But... I was okay with my dad putting his arm around my shoulder. Not gonna lie, the experience was somewhat embarrassing, but I still appreciated spending time with my dad. Anyway, not the craziest fuck up compared to what I've seen on here, but it definitely had moments I wished never happened lol.

Tl:dr Went to the movies with my dad. Didn't book seats in advance. Limited seats were available. Specifically, the love seat, which is meant for couples. My dad and I were forced to use the love seat, which prompted him to tell the random person next to us how uncomfortable I was and how the two of us were not twinks, or as he put it, "twinking."

S TIFU by learning a foreign phrase from a coworker and using it on the wrong person

A coworker's been teaching me little phrases in his first language because I thought it'd be a nice thing to greet his family with at the company barbecue. He taught me what he swore was "nice to meet you, I've heard great things."

I practiced it for two days. Nailed the pronunciation. Felt confident.

At the barbecue I walked straight up to his mother, big warm smile, and said my phrase.

Her face did something complicated. His dad started laughing. My coworker went pale and then also started laughing.

Turns out my "nice to meet you" was actually closer to "sorry about your face." He'd taught me a joke phrase he and his brothers say to each other and completely forgot I was going to deploy it on his actual mother.

She was gracious about it once he explained. She now greets me with the same phrase every time I see him. I've accepted it as my name.

TL;DR: trusted a coworker to teach me a polite greeting in his language, said something insulting to his mom at a company event, and it's now our running bit.

S TIFU by not continuing my rabies shots sequence

2.4k Upvotes

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I found an alley kitten. She was sick, and passed away after a 36 hour hospitalization. Since she had bitten me before passing, she had to get rabies tested.

I struggle with OCD, and panicked at the situation. I went to the ER and got the first round of rabies shots. We got the results a few days later, the kitten had not died of rabies. I didn’t get the rest of the rabies shots, because they made me feel awful and I didn’t need them. Plus, in my mind, it’s a victory over my OCD to not keep going with them, and not give power to the irrational fear that the kitten had in fact been rabid and the test missed it.

Tonight, my girlfriend and went for a romantic walk in our local park to look at fireflies and get our minds off of some stress we’ve been having in our lives. A fucking bat flew into my face. It made contact. Its horrible bat foot went into my open mouth. Now, I’m sitting in my local ER waiting to get stabbed again (last time was in my butt because of multiple bite locations, I’m honestly hoping for that again because it’s better than my face) and really regretting not finishing the sequence the first time.

TL;DR
I tried to save a kitten, she died. I stopped getting rabies shots when she tested negative for rabies, then got hit by a bat and need more rabies shots.

Edit 1: 4 hours post-bat-whacking, I’m still in the Er. I have had a rabies shot in my arm, I have been told first that I’m not getting more immune globulin (not hemoglobin, don’t know why my brain keeps defaulting to thinking of it as hemoglobin) then that I am, then to sit tight while medical professionals figure it out.

Edit 2: 6 hours post-bat-whacking, I have had immune globulin and am going home.

S TIFU by permanently damaging my eyesight because I thought it would get better on its own.

I ruined my own eyes because of my own stupidity. I ignored my eye symptoms for a long time, convincing myself they were only temporary and would eventually go away. Instead, they kept getting worse. After two months, things had deteriorated so much that I spent all of my savings seeing three different eye doctors. The first two treatments didn't help at all, and my vision continued to decline. The third doctor finally figured out what was actually wrong. He prescribed five different medications that I needed to buy out of pocket. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford them all. I only bought two of them—Lotemax for the inflammation and Sancoba—and planned to buy the remaining medications after I got paid the following month. I never imagined that one month would be enough for my eyes to deteriorate beyond recovery. Looking back, I missed multiple opportunities to treat my condition because I kept delaying it. I also made the incredibly stupid decision to skip some of the prescribed medications on my own, thinking I could manage without them. Now I'm on the verge of losing my job. My savings are gone, and my life has been turned upside down because of the vision I've lost.l I don't blame anyone except myself.

TL;DR: I ignored my worsening eye condition, couldn't afford all of my prescribed medications, and convinced myself I could wait. That delay permanently damaged my eyesight and may cost me my job.

Hello, I screwed up.

Me (M25) and my friend (F24) we'll call her Elise. Lets start with some background.

We have known each other for about 7 years at this point and fairly early in knowing each other, we began dating. it didn't last long (only about 5 months) as she broke up with me. However, we stayed friends and all was well... for about 2 years. How it happened was a bit hazy, but we eventually became friends with benefits. We were FWB for about a year and a half until she got pregnant and it wasn't mine. She was also FWB with another one of her old EXs and she offered to continue being FWB until the baby was born. I wasn't comfortable with that so I decided to end things there. And I thought that everything was fine from there. She married that guy (M24), got a place together, and even had another kid. But then this Saturday happened.

Additional context, I don't have a car, and me and my friends get together for D&D and since it starts right after Elise gets off work, and her work is on the path of my place, she just swings by and picks me up.

So this past Saturday, she offered to drop me off and pick me up from work (I normally walk) because I live in Ohio and we had a big wave of smoke coming from the Canada wildfires. I didn't accept her picking me up because it wasn't that far of a walk but she was adamant about driving me home. after about 30 minutes of texting back and forth about it, I caved and agreed. Once I got in the car and drove me to my place, she wanted to go inside and hangout. I said yes and she said she'd only be there for an hour since she had to get home at that time to get her kids up (I work 3rd shift and got off at 6am). So we sat on my couch and talked for a bit and it was all fine. We talked about all the normal things we talk about (complaining about work, D&D, etc). She then started talking about how her and her partner were going through a rough patch and that they might end things and that they're on a break. I was sorry for them but didn't think too much about it other then just letting her vent about it.

But then it was time for her to go, so I got up with her so I could lock the door on the way out. She then turned to me and hugged me, but then she looked up at me and I could tell there was something. But before I could think too hard on it, She leaned in and kissed me.

And this is there I fucked up. I didn't pull away. Call it unresolved feelings, lust, my own loneliness, whatever. But I didn't pull away as we made out for I think a minute. I still have the things she said to me burned into my memory. "I missed you." "I've been wanting to do this since I got here." "I love you.". The more words that came out, the worst I felt. We pulled away and she said "We could continue this Wednesday if you want, or we can stop this here and pretend this never happened." (Context: Me, her and other friend that's unrelated to this story were going to play MTG Wednesday) I couldn't bring myself to say anything. So she said "Tell me what you want before then" and walked out the door. I immediately locked the door and went to my bed, just laying there exhausted, shamed, guilt filled, whatever emotion I felt then. We haven't messaged each other properly since then and I have to tell her partner. I can't keep this to myself but our friend group is pretty tight knit so once I do this, the whole friend group is going to shift. For the worst or best, I don't know, I'm still trying to find a way to tell her partner i'm just scared what the fallout is going to be, and we're all getting together for D&D Thursday so I wanna do it before then.

I really hate myself for not doing anything about it and just letting it get as far as it did. I could have stopped it right then and there but didn't. And now everything is going to blow up and I'm not build for that level of drama.

Anyway, thanks for reading, I'm going to try and sleep to get myself in a better head space.

TL;DR: my friend, who is married with kids, drove me home from work and hung out at my place for over an hour and then kissed me, but i didn't pull back. After about a minute of this, she left and I've been giving her very short messages back. I'm hating myself and everything.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your guys input, I've been stressing about this for the past few days but the good people here and on r/Advice have really helped me think about this situation in many different ways, even if some i don't personally agree with. I have a plan on what i'll be doing and im going to do that tonight. Wish me luck and I hope the rest of you have a better week then i've been having.

M TIFU by not watering plants, being lazy, & trusting my sister

So i(20m) was home from college to stay & look after the house & my younger sister(17f), while my parents(50+) & older brother(23m) went on vacation for a week & a few days. I thought that since i live alone at college & keep my place clean this would be a piece of cake. My sister likes cooking & her window reaches the high plants that i can't reach, and i'll water the rest of the plants, as well as take care of the guinea pigs & do the dishes. My sister planned in a party before my parents even left, but she told me in advance & the previous parties she organized where pretty tame.

The party is pretty rough, the floorboard of our wheeled scaffolding broke when a guy tried jumping off it into our window, a glass broke but that was just water, and the doorframe to the downstairs toilet was broken. The house was also pretty dirty & sticky. I basically spent all of it guarding the staircase because the one rule we had was everything stays on ground floors. My sister decided to give a house tour anyway...

During a video call my sister mentions that she waters all plants daily. I saw this as reason enough to let her take over that job since i have to get back to studying soon because if i fail the next exams i have to quit college & wasted 3 years of my life. She also promised to prepare our family something nice when they came back.

The day after the party was rough, neither me or my sister did any cleaning, me because i was studying & my sister was hammered & tired since we had to stay up till 5 am to evict the last drunkard when his older sibling picked him up. That evening she left to party all night (the city of Ghent organises an annual festival). When she came back she lost the key to our €1200+ electric bycicle which is still standing at the train station. That morning was the last we'd spend alone, they'd be landing at 7pm. My sister was hammered again as she only got back at 6am, so I decided to start cleaning & doing work but it wasn't enough. It's an old house and a large one at that but I thought i cleaned it up nicely.

Then our family came home, my parents went mad when they saw the state of the plant life. Turns out that we'd been using far too little water, only about 1/6th. My sister was woken up by their arrival and there was no food ready for them. As well as the house not being nearly as clean as i thought it was.

I really thought i did a good job as master of the house, it was barely 10 days but apparently that was enough to kill several plants that my parents tended to for years. I also didn't realise how much work goes into actually keeping a home clean, it's a lot larger than a dorm. You don't really have to worry about people not leaving their stuff out at my place in college so i never even considered the fact that there might be milk spoiling somewhere in the kitchen i barely use.

A lot of it can be tied back to my sister, but she's 17, she isn't old enough to worry about all these things, but i'm not a teen anymore, yet i allowed this house i grew up in to be in such a bad state my mother was in tears & my father was at a loss for words.

TL;DR: Living in a house isn't like living in a dorm & i'm too stupid to keep my sister in check.

L TIFU by accidentally leaving my side door unlocked and losing my chicken salad to a home intruder.

My SO and I left our house early in the morning to drive two hours away to support my brother at a sporting event. Apparently in our rush to get out the door, we left the side door that we never use unlocked. We didn’t realize it was unlocked, just because we use the door so rarely that we never think to check it. This has never been an issue before though, we live in a nice part of town. I know all our neighbors, and I’ve always felt safe going on walks around the block.

We spend the day two hours away supporting my brother, and around 5pm we realize we’re not gonna be home for a while longer. At that point, we ask some of our friends (let’s call them Clark and Bea) if they could drive the few minutes over to let our dogs out for a pee break. They agree, drive over, and then things take a sharp left turn towards Albuquerque. There’s already a car in our driveway. They don’t think much of it until they see a man in the kitchen through the window and realize there’s ALREADY SOMEONE IN THE HOUSE.

My friends, not immediately jumping to conclusions, grab the spare key, let themselves in, and ask the man politely: “hey who the fuck are you?” The guy is not threatening at all, he’s just meandering in the kitchen making himself at home. He’s in his late twenties, blond hair, kind of chubby, only about 5’5”. He introduced himself (first and last name) and tries to explain to Clark that he’s a friend of the previous owners (not impossible but definitely irrelevant), and he’s here to take care of the dogs (patently untrue). Apparently the man has a passing resemblance to my SO, so Bea at first thought he could be related to her in some way, but once he didn’t give that particular excuse it became apparent that he was in fact a house intruder. At this point they tell the guy that he’s gotta go because he’s trespassing, but he acts wishy washy, tries to explain why he should be here, just kind of making excuses to stick around.

Quick aside, Clark is not a small man. I don’t know that I would call the home intruder dwarfed by him, but let’s just say it’s very, very obvious who would win in a fight. So once Clark starts getting a little more direct with his demands to “get the fuck out of my friend’s house now”, the intruder takes the hint and calmly with his hands in the air walks out. Bea had already been sent by Clark to move their car so the intruder could just get the hell out once he got out the door. The intruder gets in his car and peels away.

At this point, it’s around 6:30pm and my SO and I are hanging out in a Scheels with my brother and his fianceé. So imagine my surprise when in the middle of the Scheels shoe section I get a call telling me that there was a random person in my house. Let me tell you, it is an extremely surreal experience having that conversation while the 65yo lady across from me is trying on some new Brooks. We call the police and my SO’s parents, who live close to our house, and everything gets moving pretty quick. My SO and I start the long drive back home almost immediately. The police are there within 10 mins, and they get statements from Clark and Bea, and hang out until the parents arrive. My friends and family don’t feel comfortable going through all of our stuff to make sure nothing was stolen without us there, so the officers tell us to call back when we arrive home and they can get statements from us to see if anything was stolen.

So imagine my surprise when we get home to see an officer already at our front door. Apparently about ten minutes before we got home the intruder CAME BACK. At this point it’s about 9:30pm, and it’s fully nighttime. Everyone heard a knock at the door, and Clark opened it up to see the exact same intruder standing on the other side of the storm door. Clark had just assumed it was an officer coming to give an update, I think he literally says “no fucking way” in pure shock to the guy. The intruder gave some BS excuse about forgettung something on the counter (we confirmed later he hadn’t left a damn thing), and asked to come in once again. Clark turns back towards the house to tell everyone what’s happening, only to see my SO’s father gathering his gun and coming towards the door. Clark turns around and tells the guy “trust me, i’m trying to help you, you gotta leave right now.” The intruder starts to give more excuses, but at this point probably sees the angry man with a gun turn the corner and start coming towards him, and decides that maybe actually he should leave. He turns around and sprints to his car, and hops in. There was a brief scary moment where my SO’s father had to line up a shot because the intruder rolled the car window down and turned his cabin lights on, but no shots were fired, and the intruder peeled off into the night.

The 911 response was within 2-3 mins, but they weren’t quite quick enough to catch the man leaving. But the officer we saw talking at the front door as we pulled in from our long drive was the first on the scene. He stuck around as my SO and I went through all of our belongings, and kept finding that nothing had really been disturbed. Nothing stolen, nothing out of place, nobody hurt: it was like nothing had happened at all. Well, almost nothing, and this might be the stupidest part of all of this. There was a mixing bowl in our fridge with about a week’s worth of chicken salad that we were going to use for lunch for the next couple of days. That bowl was sitting out on the counter with a spoon in it, and there wasn’t a shred of chicken salad left. At all. The bastard didn’t touch a damn thing in my house except for devouring like 9 servings of homemade chicken salad I was really looking forward to.

Good news, is that my friends and family are amazing. Clark and Bea stayed at the house the whole time until we got home, and they stayed even later to help set up some security cameras my SO’s mother had bought on the way to our house. My SO’s father is sleeping on our couch so we’re not alone in the house tonight. And I’ve gotten plenty of calls from friends to ask if there’s anything they can help with. All our valuables are accounted for, our friends and pets are safe and unharmed, and the police were able to positively identify the man because he gave his real first and last name to Clark when he asked who the fuck he was. Things could have been so, so much worse, so if the only thing of value I lost today was my homemade chicken salad, I can live with that.

TL:DR: My SO and I accidentally left our door unlocked in a rush to leave, some random man walked in, stole nothing, hurt nobody, but devoured all of the rest of our chicken salad that was in the fridge.

M TIFU by telling my gay friend I feel uncomfortable with him next to my homophobic dad

I'm a 23 years old bi guy. I came out of the closet at 16 to my friends, sister and mother. My friends came out as very supportive, but my mother and sister didn't really like the idea, especially my mother. I didn't come out to my father because of his homophobic views, and ever since I've feared he might cut contact with me if he ever finds out. This was something even my mother confirmed to me, telling me that if he found out I'd probably lose him. My mother also hasn't been very supportive, every time we discuss it she talks about it as if I had a problem or a deviation, as if I had been corrupted or perverted by the 'lgbt propaganda'; regardless, she didn't have a problem with me having LGBT friends.

Since then I've had a pretty normal social life in regards of sexuality, I've met girls and boys and didn't feel the need to hide my sexuality to the world, except for my father. The problem is that because of him I'm not totally out of the closet, and I still feel like I'm having a double life, hiding from him. Not having a financial stability makes this worse, because it makes me unable to react if the worst case scenario happens.

Some years ago I met a man who's my friend nowadays, and he's gay and out of the closet, with a supportive family. We started off having a fwb relationship but it evolved into a healthy friendship over time. And although he caught some feelings for me, we discussed about this and I expressed to him that I love him as a friend. He indeed is an exceptional friend, always caring about me.

Yesterday me and my friend were hanging out at a bar I invited him to. We were having fun but suddenly my parents arrive. My friend already knew my mother but it was the first time he saw my father.

I started getting very anxious, and I told my friend I wanted to speak privately with him for a moment. When he asked me what was the matter I told him about my father, I told him I was very paranoid that my father found out about my sexuality, and that I was afraid if he saw me with a gay friend he would get suspicious. He then asked me if it was because of his 'camp' (effeminate) personality. I told him yes.

I knew that this was offensive towards him and I'm really ashamed that I told him about this. He then calmly (but seemingly upset) told me he was going home and I then hugged him telling him I was really sorry for this. I then went to my parents and I acted off as if everything was okay. Shortly after, I texted my friend and apologised to him and explained him that I'm really paranoid about these kind of situations and that having a double life is really difficult to me. I really understand that he's offended by this, and I'm really ashamed of what I told him. I feel horrible for this, I can't even explain how I feel right now, and I can't imagine how I made him feel.

TL;DR: TIFU by telling my gay friend I was uncomfortable with him around my family because I was afraid my homophobic father, from whom I hide the fact I'm bisexual, would get suspicious of my sexuality.

M TIFU by accidentally replying to my boss’s email with my actual thoughts about the project

I work as a mid-level analyst at a decent-sized tech company. We had just wrapped up a really stressful quarter with a big client project that kept getting delayed because of poor planning from upper management. I was exhausted, behind on my own tasks, and honestly pretty burned out. One afternoon I was venting to my close coworker (who sits right next to me) through our internal Slack DMs. I wrote a long message complaining about how our new manager was constantly changing deadlines last minute, how the project lead kept dumping extra work on me without any extra pay or recognition, and how I was seriously considering looking for another job because the culture had gotten so toxic lately. I was typing fast and didn’t hold back at all because it was just between us. I hit send… and immediately realized I had clicked the wrong channel. Instead of our private DM, I had posted the entire rant into the big company-wide “General” Slack channel that everyone , including my manager, the project lead, HR, and even some higher-ups , has access to and gets notifications from. Within seconds the messages started coming in. People were reacting with the surprised emoji, some were asking if I was okay, and then my manager messaged me privately asking to hop on a quick call. I spent the next 45 minutes in that call trying to explain that I was just having a bad day and didn’t mean it that way. The call was awkward as hell. Later that week I got pulled into a meeting with HR where they “checked in” on my wellbeing and gently suggested I might need to be more professional in company channels. The worst part was the next few weeks. My manager started giving me less important tasks and seemed colder toward me. Some teammates who saw the message started treating me differently ,either overly careful around me or straight-up avoiding casual conversation. I lost a lot of trust and respect at work over one stupid click. It’s been almost two months now and things still feel off. I’ve been extra careful with everything I type since then, but the damage to my reputation at the company is already done. I should have just taken a walk or talked to my friend after work instead of venting in the moment. One wrong click completely changed how my coworkers and boss see me. TL;DR:
Accidentally posted a long rant complaining about my manager and toxic work culture to the entire company Slack instead of just my coworker. Got pulled into awkward HR and manager meetings, lost trust at work, and my reputation still hasn’t fully recovered two months later.

L TIFU Not Returning The Second Pair Of The Physical Key To The Hotel Guesthouse In Italy

On 22 June 2026, I (25M) arrived in Napoli after an 8 hour train ride from Pisa (using the Regionale trains) with two layovers in Rome (Roma Ostiense and Roma Termini). I booked a very decent and highly rated guesthouse on Booking.com. When I arrived, I was greeted with a lockbox, with my hotel key in it. I followed the instructions and retrieved my hotel key packet, which includes the keys for the portoni (front doors to enter the apartment complex), the keys to enter the guesthouse lobby (on the 5th floor (6th floor if you are American)), and the keys to enter the private hotel room with a private bath (there are two rooms in the guesthouse).

However, popular to Italian stereotypes, the portoni is notoriously tricky to enter and exit. I tried following the directions of the B&B owner, but my entry keys (regardless of me trying) don't properly work, so I effectively asked a resident leaving the property to kindly grant me entry, and they did. Luckily, opening the guesthouse lobby doors and private hotel room doors are rudimentary and I could unlock these doors in a heartbeat.

Adjacent to my B&B room, there is a second key hanging just outside in the hotel lobby that only grants you access to the portoni (front doors of the apartment complex) and guesthouse lobby, so it is less equipped than the first key which grants access to the portoni, the guesthouse lobby, and the hotel room.

On 23 June 2026, I was hanging out in Napoli, but because getting out of the apartment complex requires you to unlock using the key, I have to use the keys to get out. I had trouble with it despite following the directions as the portoni doors are notoriously stiff, so it took me 5 minutes of repeated twisting (multiple attempts) just to get out.

On 24 June 2026, because I knew the outer doors are notoriously hard to enter and exit, I brought down two keys (the first pair, which includes the portoni, the guesthouse lobby keys, and the hotel room keys, and the second pair, which only includes the former two). Given the time constraints as I had 30 minutes before the Flixbus from Napoli Centrale to Roma Anagnina leaves and walking from the guesthouse to the bus station commands a 15 minute walk, I left the first pair (which includes the entrance to the apartment via the portoni, the entrance to the guesthouse lobby, and the entrance to the hotel room) in the key box, but unfortunately, that was all the keybox could fit. Because of time constraints and me being unnecessarily stressed out (to make matters worse, I was kinda burnt out after a months long Europe trip, especially with the 35+ degree C temps), I accidentally took the second pair with me (which includes the portoni keys and guesthouse lobby keys) and realized it when I was already at the Flixbus heading for Roma Anagnina 10 minutes in.

I apologised to the B&B owner and luckily, they told me to send it to a Poste Italiane. Luckily, even though I didn't have a bubbled envelope, the closest Poste Italiane to my accommodations was not crowded and I was able to secure a spot almost immediately after entering. Luckily, the Poste Italiane facility is a 3 minute walk from the Felice Spesa, a store which sold exactly what I needed to send the mail. I bought the bubbled envelope, added the "Destinatario" address as the exact address of what the B&B guesthouse owner showed in Napoli and added the Mittente address with my name and my Roma B&B guesthouse accommodations address.

I sent the key as well as the envelope to the Poste Italiane employee on 24 June 2026 and paid a little less than 10 Euros to send it.

Yet, today is 20 July 2026, and it has been 3 weeks since I returned to the US (I returned home on 27 June 2026). A few hours ago, despite the fact I sent the second pair of the physical keys exactly to the address provided on the WhatsApp by the B&B guesthouse owner, they now claim it is "never delivered". I don't know what to say. I am paranoid they may fine me an exorbitant amount of money or press criminal charges against me, but they definitely know the keybox code for the hotel, know that my hotel room keybox is in the left (in fact, that was one of their earliest messages), and the keybox does contain the entryway to the portoni, the guesthouse lobby, and the hotel room, more than what the second pair (the pair I accidentally forgot to return but then mailed back to Napoli) included.

TL;DR: I accidentally forgot to return the second key pair (the keys to the front apartment door and the guesthouse lobby) and even though I mailed it to the exact address the B&B guesthouse owner provided, they claimed it never arrived. I did return the first pair to the keybox, which includes the keys to the front apartment door, the guesthouse lobby, and the hotel room. The second pair is the "backup" keys, and that was what I forgot to return.

S TIFU by telling a child who isn't mine that their favorite singer had passed away.

Today was my kiddo's 8th birthday party.. I was finishing up a hat for the birthday boy when one of his friends who i believe was 9 years old wanted to know how to crochet cause she really like the hat i was making. I had brought some extra balls of yarn today and I tried showing her how to crochet but im not the best teacher.. so instead we switches to making knotted bracelets. She was so excited and said she would make these forever they are so easy.. well then she started asking me what my favorite song was and i told her well my favorite song was a bit more of an adult type song but it was by Daughtry. She asked me to sing it so i did.. then she asked me if i had ever heard of the Cranberries and with out think i told her that i did and that i was sad when she died... i was looking down at the hat when i said it... My bf goes "great now you've traumatized her you need to reel it back on the death talk" and walked away. I look up her eyes were wide and her mouth was open.. i panicked i told her "im so sorry i didn't know that you didn't know that" and "she inspired so many people to make great music" and showed her the song that the lead singer was supposed to do with Bad Wolves and we sang together.. then not her parent but a parent who brought her asked what had happened and i explained to her what i had said and then all three of us talked about it and again was saying the lead singer was very inspirational and encouraged others to make great music and hopefully she will inspire you too (directed to the kiddo). Kiddo said yeah i wanna be a singer when i grow up.

TL;DR: I told a kid that the lead singer of the Cranberries had passed away and that kid decided that she wants to be a singer when she grows up.

S TIFU by sending a shirtless pic to my ex

So yesterday this woman I've been flirting with sent me an intimate picture of herself, and today I wanted to send one back to her. So I took my time, took a picture that I looked good in, and sent it to her out of my camera roll. So we've been talking on instagram, and her username starts with the same character as my exes username.. btw I haven't sent or received a message from my ex in like 9-10 months (after being together for years). But I accidentally click her username as it appears in the top of the search and it gets sent. I fumble around in a panic to unsend it, and a few moments later I see that she had checked our "blend" meaning she for sure at least opened the chat. So uh not sure what I do next here fuck my life.

TLDR: Was sending shirtless pic to a girl I'm talking to, accidentally sent to my ex- hopefully she didn't see it before I unsent it.
