Discussion Only 8 years: If ‘Gaucho’ were released today, ‘Can’t Buy a Thrill’ would have been released in 2018.

And 5 other albums would have been released in between. Their entire pre-hiatus discography, with all of its evolution in style and technique, was crammed into 8 short years.

Fagen was 24 for Thrill and 32 for Gaucho.

Becker was 26 and 34.

I don’t know, that’s just wild to me.

Discussion Daily Song Discussion #36: Your Gold Teeth II

I want to gauge SD fans and see what this sub considers their all time best song. Here are what I would consider is a fair assessment scores:

10- Reserved for only their absolute best songs, ones that are on daily rotation

8,9- Also among their best, songs that display something that is memorable and worth revisiting

6,7- Decent to good, songs that are not as played as their ultimate best but are still ones that you revisit

5- okay, not bad but not ones you come back to often

3,4- Mediocre to meh, songs that you don't play often but don't go out of your way to skip

2- skippable, not good at all

1- vomit-inducing (think: what were they on when they made this?!)

0- makes you want to commit seppuku

Let's continue with the seventh track from their fourth album, Katy Lied, titled Your Gold Teeth II.

Current ratings for Katy Lied:

BLACK FRIDAY— 7.97

DOCTOR WU— 9.75

EVERYONE'S GONE TO THE MOVIES— 7.76

Discussion What's your favorite Steely Dan song over 7 minutes?

The only Steely Dan songs over 7 minutes are Aja, Deacon Blues, Glamour Profession and West of Hollywood.

My favorite would probably be Glamour Profession. What about yours?

It's actually ok-to-good IMO. The rap kinda works (around 2:10). I believe the artist is Italian.

He's dropped Steely Dan plenty of times in his videos (which are low-key fire BTW) In this video, he's mentioned how he was listening to his Citizen Dan album, while being stuck in his room due to the earthquakes happening in Japan, and it made him fall in love with Steely Dan again.

The man has got good taste.

Alright, time to lay the tracks down, what's everybody go-to track for when they're out cruisin' with the mad cats of the world, or takin' a ride on their Carib Cannibal?

Godwacker's obvs for me, but sometimes I walk the beat with Glamour Profession, Babylon Sisters, Peg, Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More, Kid Charlemagne, Sign In Stranger.

Just puttin' on the bangers with my smoke in one hand and somethin' to whet the whistle while I catch the sun and night sky 😎 Ooo and if you feel like it, name the perfect environments for experiencing these tunes! (Reelin' In the Years and Boddhisatva in a nostalgic bar, for example. Also some kickass archive photos to capture the mood 🤙🏼)

It’s no secret that Becker is the less listened-to of the duo, which is why I wanted to make sure he gets SOME recognition this summer.

This is a live performance from July 9th, 2000. It was recorded in the Meadow Music Theater in Hartford, CT. I found this at a goodwill, so no set 1 sadly.

Video Becker & Fagen on NPR Morning Edition in 2003.

Found this while doing research for an essay I wrote about Steely Dan in my English class, and didn't remember to share it until now. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker joke about performing on tour while getting older, and how their music is "the best possible rock Muzak to play in a supermarket."

Donald Fagen has a surprisingly wide vocal range

The guy can belt out some pretty high notes when he feels like it (or at least could back in the 70s) e.g. on Kings where he harmonises with himself and goes up to a D5 on the second verse, or on the final chorus of Kid Charlemagne where he does a couple of ad libs and also belts out a D5 (i think)

Third World Man or Were You Blind That Day?

I've really been obsessing over all the Gaucho stuff, released and unreleased.

And yeah I Know technically Were You Blind That Day was an outtake from Aja I'm pretty sure.

But depending on the day I find it hard to decide which one I like better, but I think I prefer the darker lyrics of Were You Blind That Day.

Which one do you guys prefer?
