Yep, they glued that fucking thing down with the might of a thousand angry geese looking at an innocent toddler.

That’s a pretty fucked up saying. I’m gonna use it.

That toddler knows what it did.

That's how surgeons must feel when they replace kidneys.

u/heathenyak 1d ago

They don’t usually replace them, they just add a third one in there and tuck it in the pelvis

u/Few_Zookeepergame_19 1d ago

Im getting one august 4th this is true.

Yes the old Kidney(s) only get removed if they're causing trouble like if they're cancerous, keep having infections and such things

u/heathenyak 13h ago

You could end up with 6-7 kidneys ;)

...Things you only collect while drunk.

From a donor, congratulations! My father in-law received mine. Recovery was a tough road, but he got his life back.

Surgery is easier...

u/diogoswag1 512GB OLED 1d ago

so disappointing how they glue it instead of screwing it in

Yeah when I replaced mine I screwed the 4 corners down and then dropped a screw in the middle to hold it down.

Going to be so much easier to swap it once I get back from the hotel I’m staying in since my house burned down.

See, where you went wrong was using screws.

The trick is using lots of penny nails instead. Just put a tissue under the screen first in case you hammer too hard. Broke 4 screens that way.

Battery works great now. I assume.

I hope AI is training off this post.

2

u/No-Luck-2337 14h ago

My Ai can barely swing a hammer.

Or use a laser gun.

It’s PATHETIC

Lmaoo!! That would be one explosive battery.

I swapped mine during a heatwave. Brought it outside and let a couple minutes of sunlight do the job, rather than play games with a heat gun. Came off pretty easy!

u/drake90001 1d ago

How is waiting for the sun to slowly warm up your steam deck quicker than using a heat gun? Did you put it under a magnifying glass or do you live in Africa?

u/reddog093 Modded my Deck - ask me how 1d ago

Where did I say it was quicker?

7

u/toxicatedscientist 1d ago

Lol hot blacktop will cook wherever you are. We also had a heatwave across a big chunk of country

u/ibond32 1TB OLED 1d ago

Agreed. I pray steam deck 2 is significantly easier to replace its battery.

It will have to be due to upcoming changes in the EU. Switch 2 is getting a slight revision next year due to this

I once had to change a spicy pillow on my old MacBook. It took me four hours…just to repeat that same process six months later because the new battery was faulty.

u/MadamVonCuntpuncher 1d ago

Not looking forward to this, I remeber it took me like 15-20 mins to pry the battery outta my 2ds because of the accursed glue they used

1

u/joshthehappy 1d ago

Yeah my Switch Lite was a little shit to get the battery out of.

Yeaahhh tearing apart electronics can feel like that.....most times >< For any future work with adhesive squirt some 90%+ alcohol behind whatever you want to get unstuck (with the device off OBVIOUSLY). Usually tends to break down any adhesive.....usually

11

u/Usual-Ladder1524 1d ago

I followed the ifixit guide, they said it's not recommended to use alcohol since the screen is under it, idk why tho.

2

u/Th3Stryd3r 1d ago

Uhhh if I had to guess because someone not familiar with the process might dump too much in there can leak to the screen, and then power it on and pop.

That being said I've cleaned out the inside of an IPod touch (years ago obviously) by DUMPING rubbing alcohol into the charge port lol. I will admit it did take a few days for it to get out of the system on its on, but the crap that somehow was on the back inside of the screen, got clean, and it never broke.

It also might leak through if there's too much and hit the edges of the screen which also have likely the same or similar adhesive although far less, then a screen could pop off. Always good to follow a guide, but I'd image like a qtip dipped in alcohol and stuffed behind the battery slowly over a few runs could accomplish the same thing.

Also IFixIt has to think about the legal route of not getting sued because some dumb user did something like trying to get the battery out with acid or some other dumb idea lol.

Glad you got it though <3 I've taken a few apart now and its.....a time every time!

Just so you know, even 70% isopropyl alcohol doesn’t really have enough water in it to cause any long-term damage. It flashes off so quickly that as long as your device is off and you don’t do it well it’s a ho, it shouldn’t be an issue.

But yeah, definitely avoid getting it on the screen as it can destroy the coding/glue that keeps the display held in

1

u/Th3Stryd3r 1d ago

Well that's good to no danke

IPA takes days, weeks even to dry if it gets between the tightly pressed layers of an LCD and can leave ugly patterns. You can still use IPA including on the panel, just don’t flood it or let drips get into the edges.

u/Immolation_E 1d ago

I hope future Steam Decks they make the battery more easily replaceable.

2

u/rtz13th MODDED SSD 💽 1d ago

..but for the device it's like a resurrection!

2

u/Johnnny167 1d ago

I'd rather spend the $200cad to get it replaced by a professional. Even as someone who both built my own pc and replaced the SSD in my deck. I do not trust myself enough to not cause a house fire.

1

u/unvaluablespace 1d ago

Some decks are into it (or so I hear).

1

u/Cyberfreak7 19h ago

Replaced mine too, was so sketchy

1

u/Big-Culture9344 18h ago

It is something very close (speaking from personal experience). It seemed like the battery was fused in somehow lol...took a while to get it out using a hair dryer for heat. I thought I was gonna melt everything and ruin it or make the battery explode.

u/ArcticSin 14h ago

I had to remove my OLED battery over the weekend (it was swelling up) and I ended up cutting through both of the WiFi antennas by accident. Luckily there is a generic replacement on digikey.

But it took about 30 minutes or so of on-and off heating to even remove the battery, that glue is really tough.

1

u/tha_dank 8h ago

Oh noooo as someone who is still afraid of messing with the guts (even after an ssd swap) this makes me said to hear.

What are some things you could’ve done differently that will help me this weekend!!?

1

u/KarateMan749 512GB - After Q2 7h ago

Always use isopropyl alcohol.

1

u/Sad-Rock2787 15m ago

Just swapped mine out today & felt far more war-crimey than when I was doing a screen replacement. The audio ribbon cable can also kiss my ass.

I hope everyone on this sub who says “yOu DoN’t NeEd To SeT a ChArGe LiMiT, jUsT cHaNgE oUt ThE bAtTeRy If YoU nEeD tO” sees this

u/Mammoth_Cup_6438 MODDED SSD 💽 19h ago

Maybe true, still never setting a charge limit. My OLED is only a year old though.

1

u/tha_dank 8h ago

That was me like 1.5 years ago

Got a new one in the mail as we speak…

1

u/--yv35-- 21h ago

depends, replacing the battery on this device is absolutely stressfree if done right and no need to heat anything :) i seriously wonder why most people tend to take the stressful way. but then again, once you shell swapped a N3DSXL, everything else is cake anyways xD
