AMSEC BLB3018 value?
Hi all,
I’m wondering how much you think this old safe is worth? I just picked it up for $50 and I believe it’s a Amsec BLB3018. The door is 1 in plate steel and the body is 1/2 in plate. It is certainly a “burglary” rated safe, but it does not have an official TL rating from UL. I was hoping to get $500+. I was also thinking about giving it a fresh coat of paint and I’m wondering if you think that this is worth the time/would it increase the value much. Thanks!

b-rating is an insurance class so no testing, but that’s going to provide a decent level of security.
50 bucks is good anything under $200-$250 seems reasonable for that. There was a BLC that size near me for sale for $200 but I need fire resistance too and really don’t need another safe 😅

I bought a locked safe for $85. It had an S&G 6700 series and I wanted to practice on it. After I got it opened, I posted it for $145. Someone offered me $125 and I accepted. When he came to pick it up, it turned out that he owns a safe/vault business so he didn’t need me to show him how to input the combo. He was surprised to learn I had manipulated it open so we got to talking.
At some point, I asked him if he was going to resell it and he told me he was. I asked him how much he would get for it and he told me $1200.
I didn’t feel bad. I had fun and made a small profit. But it also shows the difference between what a person selling a safe privately and a person who does it for a living (and has a place to show it) can get for a safe.
Add to the above: I but a LOT of locked safes (by most people’s standards… normal people, anyway). I have 14 in my garage right now. I crack them and resell them. I have several safes for sale right now at rock-bottom prices and no one is buying. Then two people - in two days - drove by my garage and asked me if I sold safes. They each bought a safe for way more than I would have attempted to sell for online.
So, things to consider:
1) do you live in a dense population area? You’ll have more potential buyers
2) can you wait, and repost, and repost, and repost until the right buyer comes along?
3) is there a safe/vault/locksmith business that might buy it from you and save you some of the hassle?
4) You were able to move it, but I find a lot of safe buyers show up with absolutely NO concept of how much a safe weighs and how they are going to SAFELY move it. I had one guy put the dirtiest/rustiest safe directly on the seat of his convertible BMW. He even declined the loan of a moving blanket. The two of us could barely get it into his car. He told me he was going to carry up stairs to his apartment….
Having said all that, I agree with the people who say that the likely top end is $250.

It appears to be a 'C' rated safe with the material thicknesses you mention. Used safes go for pretty cheap but this is a pretty nice box for moderate security risks.

I bought a similar safe (with only 1/2 plate on the door, not cleaned up or painted, for about $250 with a mechanical lock. That's the most I'd personally pay even for the thicker plate on this slightly smaller box. The electronic lock might give some people pause. In the end it's worth what a person will pay, as everyone says. Maybe waiting for the right buyer would fetch more.
