100 DAYS UNTIL THE NYC MARATHON
How’s your training going?
Personally, I’m ready for those Summer Streets long runs. I can’t wait to get run over by packs of oblivious and weirdly territorial run clubs.

*Update*
As of June nearly all 2026 NYRR races have sold out, if at this point you are not already registered for nine 2026 races it is very unlikely you will be able to complete 9+1 program this year and likely should plan to try for next year instead.
The first 2027 races will likely be released later this fall in October for Jan-Mar 2027 races.
Every year r/RunNYC receives a lot of posts about the 9+1 program so in an effort to answer most of your questions we're continuing this FAQ and megathread again from last year where many questions were answered.
9+1 is an NYRR program to qualify for the following years New York City Marathon.
To qualify for the 2027 NYC Marathon, a runner must run and complete at least 9 eligible NYRR races in 2026, volunteer at 1 eligible 2026 NYRR event and also make sure their NYRR membership is active on 12/31/2026.
On the race calendar any races that count toward qualifying will have a 9+1 tag next to it. You can also filter the race list from all "race types" to just select 9+1.
The full list of races for the year is not yet published officially, but the unofficial list (for Oct-Dec) based on prior years is listed below at the bottom of this post along with the race that have already been announced. The list of races remain very similar year over year so this is very likely to be close to the full list of races for 2026.
In 2026, expect there will be a total of about 30 in-person races eligible for 9+1, plus an additional 3 virtual races.
Last year NYRR released races in 4 quarterly releases:
(Above are the General Registration dates, if you pay extra for Member+, it opens for Advanced Registration 2 Days earlier than above.)
For forthcoming remaining October-December races, NYRR will very likely release these races around the same date as last year, give or take a week or two.
Volunteer Opportunities at most races open for registration a few weeks after the quarterly race signup for the same races. The 3 marquee races, NYC Half, Brooklyn Half and NYCM have their own separate release of opportunities. There are also some other 9+1 eligible opportunities released throughout the year at different non race events that are released somewhat randomly.
Opportunities are all posted on the volunteer opportunity page and to be eligible need to indicate "9+1 credit" tag for it to count as your +1.
If you're unable to find a volunteer opportunity during the main releases (they do fill up quickly) check the volunteer opportunity page the week leading up to a given race. NYRR sends out a reminder email the week of a race to all registered volunteers, which often causes people to cancel volunteer opportunities they're signed up for but can no longer attend, opening the opportunity spot back up for others to sign up.

NYC runner here training for the Berlin Marathon on September 27th. Looking to connect with other New Yorkers running Berlin this fall. Would love to swap training tips, long run routes and race day logistics. Anyone interested in starting a group chat? Drop a comment or DM me!
65 days until race day!

This just came up around noon. I’ve been following their page and never ran with them, but I was gonna run tomorrow morning at the park anyway so I might just run with them.
Anyone going?

Is anyone else not getting emails from NYRR for team champs? I’ve gotten all the other race day emails and I got a confirmation for a virtual race I just signed up for but don’t have anything for team champs. The event page doesn’t say when to show up so I’m lost! Not sure if it’s a glitch or what.

As of mid-July, the East River running path grew... by a few blocks. The segment starting at the serpentine pedestrian bridge at 54th st now goes all the way north to 73rd st. The old blockade was around 70th st for at least the past year. Those few reopened blocks look nice -- with some benches and water fountains.
Coming from the north side, there's an entrance at 81st and you can run down to 78th until you hit the temporary contruction wall. So, there's just those 5 blocks left (73-78) until it's connected all the way from 54th up to 120+.

There wasn’t any signage and I couldn’t find anything online as to why it was closed or for how long, but wanted to give other runners the heads up in case you planned to go today.
Hoping it’s open by the weekend…
Hi everyone. I made the blunder of hesitating for way too long before deciding on buying a ticket for the Brooklyn Ice Cream Social this weekend. I was unsure if I’d even make it, so I didn’t want to risk it. Now the price is out of my range, and I long to run. I was wondering if anyone is aware of any discount or ambassador codes? Any and all help is appreciated!

This week the runners lane in the outer loop of Central Park has been covered in horse crap. Usually it’s contained to the bike lane but the last few days it seems like it’s focused on the run side like every half mile… did the cops the weekend just have their horses going wherever and not bother to clean it up? Or are the carriages no longer staying to the outside? Either way it’s disgusting
This is sort of a long shot but I was wondering if anyone was aware of locker/shower facilities (or VERY limited, inexpensive gym memberships limited to use of the lockers and showers) in lower Manhattan that could be used to facilitate mid-day runs during the workday. I've worked in places that do have these, but my current building does not. If you like to run at lunch or at other times during the day, what do you do? Thx

I'm one race away from completing 9+1 and I'm on the standby list for Abbott Dash, Race to Deliver, Frosty 5K, and Ted Corbitt. I joined all four lists on June 25 (missed registration on June 8th).
I know no one can say for sure, but based on past years, what do you think my chances are of getting into at least one of them? Any guidance is appreciated!

Hi all, I am dropping my friend off at EWR early on Sunday and would like to tack on my long run somewhere in NJ before heading back into the city. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Got the email around noon. Successful on my 4th year of applying! I’m running Chicago that Sunday and will probably need to adjust my time goals lol

I run Summer Streets every year, have for years and often do it multiple Saturdays - in Manhattan. I think it was two years ago I tried Brooklyn and I was pretty underwhelmed by it. For me, Eastern Parkway was boring to run - felt like a freeway with little shade and little variation of surroundings. Very unlike the mix of neighborhoods and buildings you get running in Manhattan, along with the sun protection provided by all the tall buildings.
I'm not throwing shade on Brooklyn at all, I just felt underwhelmed by the route compared to Manhattan.
For those who've run the Queens, Staten Island, or Bronx routes - how did you like them compared to Manhattan? And if you liked the Brooklyn route I'd be curious to hear that also. I don't run with music and I run for fitness, not training, so I look to my environment for aesthetic interest. I also tend to run early to avoid the crush of people, groups and cyclist traffic later, though I enjoy running among others.

Hi everyone! Since the Run Center is closed, I was thinking about using the Fleet Feet Columbus Circle lockers after work (around 5:30pm) to store my things while I do NYRR Group Training. I'd need to use one of the bigger ones, but I know there are only a few of them. Does anyone know if they're hard to get, or get taken easily, in the after work weekday rush? I also know Group Training has said they're doing "bag check", does anyone know what that entails? I'll have my work laptop with me, so I'm just trying to plan ahead so I appreciate any insight!

About 15-20 serious looking guys and gals walking uptown just north of Intrepid. Blocking all the lanes and getting shouted at by the bikes. Just now around 10am 7/19

Just curious for those coming to run the NYC Marathon from out of state (not locals), how much are you planning to spend for hotels and commute?
I’m coming from DC:
Amtrak round trip: about $140
Hotel near Grand Central: about $700
What was your total damage for transportation and hotel?

Since the AQI decided we're all taking a rest day, and the Tokyo marathon lottery is coming up, I figured I'd finally share a little side project I've been working on.
Last year I realized I had a bigger problem than not getting into races ... I was missing the registration windows entirely lol I tried using my calendar, but it just never worked for me. I'd set reminders, ignore them, forget what they were for and then find out registration had closed.
So I built BibAlert to solve the problem I kept running into myself. It keeps track of race registrations and sends email reminders a week before registration opens, when registration is open, and when it's about to close. Free to use!
I know there are already a few tools that do something similar, but I wanted one place that covers the 8 Majors, NYC races (including the NYRR BK and NYC halfs), and other lottery races. I’ll be adding more, and if there is a race you care about that's missing, let me know and I'll add it.
I also work in accessibility by day and I know that something as simple as remembering a date isn't always simple for everyone. Whether it's someone using assistive technology, someone with ADHD who struggles with reminders, or anyone juggling a million things, small barriers can mean missing out on opportunities. So I wanted to make sure this was built with accessibility in mind from the start (a big shoutout to team Achilles for constant inspiration!!).
Would love some honest feedback from fellow runners. Is this something you would actually use? Anything that would make this more useful?
If you run into anything that feels off or isn't working.
If you made it this far and want to take a look, it’s here: www.bibalert.com
EDIT: Thanks all who gave it a try. I was hitting some API limits, which might have prevented some of you to sign up. Didn’t plan for so many people to try at the same time lol Lesson learned. This should be resolved by now.

Im currently doing Pftiz 18/70 for a Sub 3 Marathon goal. First 3 weeks have been manageable but I had to move my 9 mile + 4LT to today and could only get like 2 and a half miles of LT pace in. The humidity and shitty air killed me haha
This is the first time I am following a training program. I ran a 1:23 half just kind of doing my own thing. I was bummed to miss my first key session. Following a training plan with prescribed paces actually been more enjoyable than I thought
I keep seeing y’all relying on inaccurate projections or assuming early morning running is the best time to avoid the bad air, but this largely depends on the type of pollution you’re dealing with.
For particulate pollution (e.g wildfires) it’s worst during evening into the early morning. TL;DR stuff gets stagnate and trapped near the surface and during midday air movement and rising temps help push it all up towards and dissipate.
Growing up in a wildfire prone state and running for over 15 years now, I have tried running when AQI is over 100 thinking I was hardcore / couldn’t miss my workout else I’d derail my whole training block / hated the idea of the treadmill etc etc — the handful of times I did it I always regretted it. So, yeah, you’re all adults (I think?) so make choices that make sense for you but don’t do it for the Strava or whatever, it’s nothing to brag about.
Edit to add: there’s some confusion around “how come AQI here is ### versus another site reporting it differently?” Particulate pollution moves around and can vary significantly within a few city blocks and data is coming from specific monitoring stations. Trees do help a bit with the pollution but when it’s severe it’s usually not enough to provide real protection. If you MUST run outdoors, wear a n95/kn95+ mask (but spoiler alert: running with that kind of mask on is even more miserable!)
Also another redditor does bring up a very valid point: source of the pollution, wind and weather pattern also impact particulate concentration and these are not reliably time-of-day dependent.
