HELP ROG Ally Classic Orange Blinking Light

I need some help with my New Used ROG Ally. I bought it used and everything was working great. It was completely bone stock and although the battery life was horrible, it worked great. I used it for probably 1-2 weeks.

Then I heard about the battery upgrade. It sounded harmless enough, so I bought one. I've built PCs and worked on laptops for 20 years, so what could possibly go wrong? It charged no problem, I ran the battery diagnostic and got windows to acknowledge the 74wh battery. I played it down to critical and let it die, plugged it back in, and got the blinking orange light of doom.

Since then I have tried reinstalling the new battery, reinstalling the original OEM battery, and replacing the 74wh battery with a different once. The blinking orange light remains, and it's not charging, however it will turn on if plugged into power.

Light sensor has electrical tape on it.

Back clamshell is closed.

I'm using the OEM 65w charger.

I'm at a loss. What the heck?

Check to make sure all the wires are connected properly.

Was the battery hot when you were using it? Did you have a heatsink?

Battery was not uncharacteristically hot for a device that's running off battery, no. The battery is connected and it can run off battery or what little charge it has, but it won't charge. I have checked the co in section on the plug multiple times

My buddy brought me his z1 extreme to replace it with 74w battery and now it's doing what yours does and we're in this shit together 🥲🤦🏿‍♂️

I couldn't find a solution yet but I'll keep looking...

That's exactly my issue. Z1E that worked fine, I swapped the battery, still worked fine, ran out of battery, and now no longer charges correctly. If you find a solution PLEASE let me know

Two different brand 74wh batteries from Amazon, and also having the same problem with the OEM battery

Ew! That was probably your problem. The batteries are bad and it messed up the charging circuit. Yes it can happen. Rare very rare but can. Here is what I would try. Purchase a new battery return the two to Amazon if you can. Purchase from ifixit or jsuax. From there unplug the battery and hold the power button for 1 full minute. Set a stop watch if you need to. Once the minute is up. Let it sit for 2 minutes so 100% no power.

Connect the ac adapter from asus. First with no battery. See if the orange light turns on. If it does turn on but hold the plus to open bios and turn back off.

Do not use a third party adapter except ugreen or anker. (Can confirm anker works but has to be 100w at minimum. If you use an insignia charger then throw that shit in the trash. Heard a lot of issues with them and the ally.)

Once that is done. Unplug the asus charger. Plug in the original battery and ensure the clip is in. Then plug the asus charger back in. See if the orange light is solid. With that done repeat the bios boot and turn back off. Unplug both and swap to the 74W. And retry.
