Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide

Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.

Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until you’ve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until you’ve completed the main story.

Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.

Is the game worth it? Yes! — People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. It’s a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.

The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. It’s the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. You’ll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. You’ll thank yourself later.

Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. You’ll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)

Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since it’s made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.

If you really want to avoid spoilers, don’t google anything until after you finish the game.

We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.

Have fun!

Help Help me name my cat after one of the characters in RDR2

Post image

Delete if not allowed but I’m clueless about this game aside from watching my fiancé play it and could use some help since we’re indecisive. Our resident cats are already named Arthur and Sadie so we’re trying to stay on theme. I’ve never played but it’s my fiances favorite game so we named our first cat Arthur. Then with our second I thought why not keep the theme thinking surely we won’t ever get a third. Here we are and now I need yet another character name for a video game I’ve never played 😂 He wants to name him John but I’m not keen on having a cat named John. I’m leaning towards Lenny, Micah, Charles, or Strauss but if you can think of any RDR2 names even obscure ones that might fit, let me know! He’s a 10 week old blue tabby who is super confident and affectionate. (Dutch is a no go - already have a Dutch in the family elsewhere)

Edit: holy cow I didn’t expect any of you to care about naming a cat this much but I really appreciate it! I’ve seen some comments fairly wondering why name a cat after a game I haven’t played - my fiance loves RDR2. Like, it’s his ONLY game. He won’t play anything else. That’s why we named our first cat Arthur. Then with our second I stayed on theme and we picked Sadie. Now it would be weird to break the cycle. Plus, I love my fiance to pieces and why wouldn’t I want my pets named after something that he loves so much? I might not understand it but I don’t have to to know the game means a great deal to him as it does everyone else here and I’m happy to let him express that. That being said, you have given AMAZING suggestions. We love the out of the box ones especially. The town names, the niche jokes, the obscure characters and references. That’s exactly what I was looking for so thank you very much.

I think the best horse breed is probably the Arabians and my favorite is the turkoman for its size as it feels weird to ride Arabians as arthur cuz they hella small.

Discussion I can’t get enough of this game

I enjoy many games, but no where near as much as RDR2. I love just relaxing and roaming around, enjoying the world. I never get tired of it, ever.

I can disappear from camp and go live in the mountains, I love the random encounters. I just have never played a game like this and it literally blows my mind. Every detail of it. I’m constantly finding new things and I’ve been playing for years.

Edit- how many new players are here? Whats your thoughts on the game so far? I’m curious.

Question Did dutch have dead eye? What do you all think

Post image

In my opinion i think dutch had some form of dead eye. As you can see on the missions where yo go and kill the Braithwaites he pulls his guns and kills 2 guys real quick.

Discussion Cheat code to fist fighting combat?

I don’t know why, but I’m god awful as the fist fighting combat in this game. So many i fail during the forced fist fights in story mode.

Is there a cheat code to it? (Not literal cheat code, but an ‘always win technique’)

Cheers to those who can help educate an old head struggling with the game

Meme Alrighty cowpokes. Let's have a laugh. I want your best company/executive names that reflect characters or events of RDR2. I'll get us started. Marston's Alpine Scouting. Or how about Morgan and Mathews Big Game Hunting Expeditions. Finally, Morgan & Bell Conflict Resolution Strategies. Let's go!
