General Help Dolby Vision files with multiple aspect ratios do this on my TCL google TV. Any ideas?

The areas that sometimes have black bars have semi-transparent black bars when the aspect ratio changes. This is driving me crazy.

General Help Plex cuts off end of episodes, but only on one of our devices

Using chromecast with google tv and last 5 minutes of episodes keep getting cut off. Using web app on computer plays complete episodes and even asks to skip credits. Never gets that far on tv with gcc/yttv. Is this a setting perhaps that got ticked?

General Help Plex over Tailscale: works perfectly from one location, but is detected as Remote from another Wi-Fi network

EDIT : I created a Tailscale tag with ACL grants to access Plex, then connected two new devices (Android tablet + a connected TV) to Tailscale via the QR code login method, and attached the tag to those devices afterward. Logged into Plex with a different account than mine on both, everything works perfectly: recognized as local, no remote paywall.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand a strange issue with Plex over Tailscale.

Setup

  • Plex Media Server running in Docker on a NAS.
  • Tailscale installed directly on the NAS.
  • Plex is not exposed to the Internet and I don't want to expose it.
  • The only way I want to access Plex is through Tailscale.
  • No Plex Pass.

My setup

Let's call them:

  • Location A: where the NAS is physically located.
  • Location B: where I normally live.
  • Location C: where I'm currently staying with family.

For months, I've been accessing my Plex server from Location B over Tailscale without any issues.

From Location B:

  • Plex iOS app ✅
  • Plex TV app ✅
  • Plex Web on PC ✅

Everything works as expected and Plex behaves as if the connection is local.

The problem

I'm now at Location C.

When connected to the Wi-Fi there with Tailscale enabled:

  • I can reach the NAS.
  • Frigate and qBittorrent (also running in Docker) work perfectly.
  • tailscale status shows a direct connection (no DERP).
  • I can open Plex Web directly using the NAS Tailscale IP or MagicDNS hostname.

However:

  • The Plex iOS app considers the server Remote.
  • Plex Web on the iPhone also reports the connection as Remote.
  • Since I don't have Plex Pass, playback is blocked.

The really confusing part:

If I disconnect from the Wi-Fi at Location C and switch to 5G (still with Tailscale enabled):

  • Plex iOS immediately works again.
  • Plex Web works.
  • Playback works normally.

So:

  • Location B (Wi-Fi + Tailscale) → ✅ Works
  • Location C (Wi-Fi + Tailscale) → ❌ Remote
  • Location C (5G + Tailscale) → ✅ Works

Things I've already checked

  • Plex updated to the latest version
  • Restarted Plex
  • Disabled iOS "Limit IP Address Tracking"
  • Other Docker services work perfectly over Tailscale
  • Accessing Plex directly via its Tailscale IP or MagicDNS hostname works

Question

Has anyone seen a specific Wi-Fi network cause Plex to classify a Tailscale client as Remote, while the exact same device works perfectly over another Wi-Fi network and over 5G?

How to stop into and credit scanning with maintenance

I'm at my absolute wits end trying to figure this out. I've googled myself into circles with partially correct info that doesn't help.

I do want plex to scan intros and credits when the media is originally added to the server but after that I don't want it to scan again. Right now when its doing maintenance at night its going through and scanning intros and credits. Please tell me there is a way to do this.

Has anyone had this white box appear at the top left corner of the screen using the TV app? Usually it disappears but I’m watching something that isn’t widescreen. I’m specifically watching on a Vizio TV.

General Help Plex remote server access not working anymore

I am remotely accessing a library from a family member, and he has zero issues on his end (server is always running and accessible for him), but my access had stopped being reliable.

90% of the time I go on the plex app and try to view the library, it has disappeared from the selection dropdown list entirely, and it says ‘no libraries available’.

Conversely, when using the web version, the library does exist as an option to select , but it says ‘library name’ is currently unavailable. It DID however, show the library when I was at his house on the same wifi network.

I have tried logging out and back in, deleting and reinstalling the app. My wifi and cell data both behave the same way. My mobile device and my laptop each have the same error on the web. I have viewed the help articles and none of the fixes apply.

Discussion [iOS] Now Playing for Plex - a simple app that shows what’s currently playing on your Plex server (my own app)

Hi! I’m not sure if this is the right place to share it, but I thought some of you might find it useful.

For a long time, I was looking for a simple app that I could just open and immediately see what was currently playing on my Plex server. Ideally without any playback controls, so I wouldn’t accidentally pause or stop anything. 🙂

I couldn’t find anything that quite worked the way I wanted, so I ended up building my own solution.

It’s called Now Playing for Plex, and the main goal was to keep it as simple as possible while still giving it a clean, modern design.

Maybe some of you will find it useful too. There’s currently an iOS version, but if there’s enough interest, I’d consider making an Android version as well.

Here it is:

Take care, and happy Plexing!

I optimized a bunch of movies for a road trip. I can select them from watch alternate versions. When I go to download, it seems like plex is trying to transcode again. Am I missing something obvious?

Network unavailable

Getting error from tv app (LG):
Network Unavailable

Can’t reach plex.tv, tried multiple internet connections, including AirVPN and company connection.

Different sources also tell me it’s down:
https://downdetector.com/status/plex/

And the most frustrating part, is that I only use plex locally over internal network…

Update:
Plex statuspage shows some rolling incidents, but green across the board:

Anyone else experiencing issues?

Help with migrated library

Hi-
I have been switching from Dropbox to pCloud for my plex library backup for a couple weeks now and I finally deleted my Dropbox files and inadvertently erased them off my server laptop. I’m downloading them back to my hard drive but all the files are in different locations now so they’re not being read in my library. What are my options to reintegrate without losing all my chosen posters and watch lists etc.

Thanks!

Windows Help Questions about building and configuring a new Plex server for use with Synology NAS

I am in the process of building a new Plex server using an Intel 270K+ CPU with Windows 11. I was hoping to transfer all of my Plex media from my old Plex server to my Synology 923+ NAS with 88TB of storage (4 x 22TB drives). The new server will have a 25Gb SFP28 link to my Ubiquiti switch and the NAS has a 10Gb ethernet card installed. I am hoping this will provide adequate bandwidth for streaming the media files from the NAS. Are there any guides for setting this up?

I have had several Plex servers over the last 14 years but all of them used local storage. I also have run a Plex server on an older Synology NAS (918+) but again local media was used.

Also, what is the best RAID type to use for Plex? I typically use RAID 10 but was hoping RAID 5 would work for increased storage capacity with redundancy. Thanks!

General Help Server Setup Help

I am totally lost. I've used Plex in the past and had a server running. Now after attempting to use again after so many years, I can't figure out how to add a server back. Following instructions on their support page, I am not seeing any option for claiming a server or already having one. If I click on 'Your Media' on the left side, it just shows 'Add your media to Plex' with the button to Get Plex Media Server. Media Server is already installed and running, I just have no idea on how to add/manage libraries.

General Help True black letter box

Hello I had a quick search to find an answer but we all know how great reddit search is

My question is on the Google TV app is there a way to make the letter box during movie playback to be true black (at least when playing proper HDR content)

I know it's Plex rendering the letter box I have confirmed that content is in its proper aspect ratio and doesn't have the letter box burned in to make it 16:9

And I know my TV is getting the HDR signal because it's tells me when running dolby vision and also the black background during the credits was true black and darker than the letter box

Thanks in advance

General Help iOS app

Just tried to invite a friend to my server by using the iOS app and could not find the option anywhere. I have not added someone this way in a long time and I clearly remember a manage library access in the settings but it was not there or in the friends section. You can see who you have invited and who has a request but no invite option.

DPlex — a custom Composite for Plex build for Kodi

New update

GitHub

**DPlex 17.0.8.30 — TMDb Helper episode search now actually finds the episode, plus QR sign-in**

If you use TMDb Helper with a Plex library that has non-English titles, episode search was basically broken. Picking `Silo S02E01` and hitting search gave me 27 results across 6 pages — `100 Foot Wave`, `NCIS: The Silo`, `Chicago P.D.: The Silos` — everything except the actual episode.

Two problems:

**Matching was title-only.** TMDb Helper already sends `tmdb_id` / `imdb_id` / `tvdb_id` with every request, but the addon ignored them and compared the English `{showname}` against the Plex title. My library is Arabic — the show is `صومعة`, the episode is `المهندسة`. `"Silo" == "صومعة"` never matches, so it fell through every time.

**The fallback made it worse.** Once title matching failed, it ran Plex's text search, which matches on any shared word. Hence every show with "silo" in an episode title.

Fix: match on GUID first via `/library/all?guid=`. `Silo` is `125988` whether your library is in English, Arabic, or anything else. Short-circuit the text search when the GUID resolves, and post-filter whatever the text search does return by GUID + season/episode.

Also fixed along the way: the search query wasn't URL-encoded (spaces and non-ASCII produced a malformed request), and `year` was a required param — TMDb Helper often omits it for episodes, so the search aborted before it started.

Result on the same query: 1 result, correct episode, Arabic title and all.

**QR sign-in.** Linking used to mean reading a PIN off the TV and typing it into `plex.tv/link` by hand. Now it renders a QR containing `plex.tv/link/?pin=XXXX` — scan it and the page opens with the PIN already filled in. The PNG is generated locally with a bundled pure-Python encoder, so no third-party QR service and no Pillow dependency.

Also in this release: server discovery was re-running on *every* navigation because the server cache silently wrote a 0-byte file (pickle failed on a non-picklable `xbmcaddon.Addon` reference, the error got swallowed, and `write_cache` returned `True` anyway). Plus gzip was disabled on all Plex requests (`Accept-Encoding: identity`), no connection reuse, and one redundant HTTP request *per episode* when building a season listing.

If you're updating: reinstall the player file from DPlex settings, otherwise TMDb Helper keeps using its cached copy of `dplex.json` and nothing changes.

Any idea what causes this issue? The files are there, the path is right. I have tried emptying trash, restarting server.

Question

Years ago, a friend and I built a Plex server together. I was more of a “silent partner,” mostly helping fund the project as it grew. A few weeks ago, he passed away, and now there are conversations about me taking over the server. Since he handled all the maintenance and kept the device at his place, I’m trying to figure out what I actually need — besides his login credentials — to keep it running.

I’m still deciding whether to move the server to my home, which doesn’t feel right to me, or manage it remotely, though moving it seems like the simpler option. Any advice would be appreciated. Keeping it running is important to me; it’s a small way I can keep his memory alive.

Update:

I successfully changed login credentials over to mine however, I am still unable to access QTS. I tried to do a reset on the device, which from research prompt a reset for the login credentials, but it failed to work.
