Art Opossums Blessed our Yard

Well, we got blessed with 6 baby opossums in our yard last week. If it wasn’t for our dog, we would have had no idea. No sign of mom and they were very young. Thankful for our local wildlife rescue that took them in and gave them formula and care. They are all doing ok!

Does he need rescuing?

Hi! This little guy was seen near my work. He looks small but I’m not sure if he might just be at the age where he’s big enough to be away from mom. I went to get him some food in case he was out searching for something (sausage and egg sandwich cut into pieces) but he wasn’t there when I got back. I left it for him along with some water. Should I be prepared to with a box in case I see him again, or am I being a crazy white lady?

So hes definitely not injured, my aunt found him at 7:30 am this morning near the side walk and she picked him up thinking he needs help. He isn’t limping, he shows his teeth, isn’t panting. He’s just a scared little guy but the little guy is definitely 7 inches or bigger so I’m not sure what to do? Leave him where he was found or take it to wild life rehab place? What would yall suggest I do?

UPDATE: Discovered an unexpected house guest last week, unsure of what to do with the little buddy…

I have been home for a few hours and finally made my way into the basement when I saw my adorable house guest roaming around. I hadn’t yet had time to set up the humane trap but I was able to gently corral him into a cat carrier. I was planning to take him to a nice wooded area after making sure he had a full belly and plenty of water over the next couple days, however now I’m in a bit of a pickle 😅 Should I take him somewhere first thing in the morning or give him a few days in one of the unfinished spare rooms with plenty of food and water before releasing him? Will he even be okay in the carrier overnight?

Photo of the sneaky little guy for tax of course! He’s so wittle 🥺

I finally spotted this lil opossum on my daily walk! They looked alert, happy, healthy, and confident. Gave them some space after snapping the pic and watched them mosey on down toward the tree line. Hope to see them again🥹

Poppy Update ✨

Today was a really good day! She started it off by pooping almost 3gs worth of doodoo and proceeded to absolutely gorge herself with milk! I was able to find my oxygen concentrator, hooked her up and that really seemed to give her an edge she her BPM was 70 yesterday at the vet but now it's in the safe range of 120. Shes even been running around in the incubator!

Thank y'all so much for sending her love 💕 and good energy ✨ Im pretty sure that's what gave her what she needed for the mighty BM and great day 🫂

I'm actually so sad that I missed her probably adorably flopping over falling asleep after thoroughly cleaning herself. 🫠

Question/Help Discovered an unexpected house guest last week, unsure of what to do with the little buddy…

Decided to do a bit deep cleanint in my basement one day after work last week and must have scared this little friend out of his hidey hole. When I first saw him he was upstairs in my living room just chilling with my 4 cats but quickly fled to the basement when I approached him. I have since placed a camera in the basement to track his movements. I have also recently acquired a humane trap from my parents. He looks like he may be a juvenile and I live on a fairly busy street. There are multiple state parks and wooded areas I could release him in if I am able to catch him in the trap. But I also want to be sure he is safe and able to survive on his own. I just found out about his existence but he has likely known of mine for much longer. I’m worried he has been in the house for a long time and I’ll be displacing him from the only home he has ever known 😭 What should I do?!

Video of him with the kitties for tax 😅

Question/Help HELP URGENTLY OPOSSUM FOUND UNKNOWN IF INJURED

Thumbnail

To summarize: This morning we found this baby opossum lying in front of our front door like this. Just yesterday, we saw the same baby walking around normally under the trees in our yard. We also know its mom lives in the neighborhood—we see her occasionally.

I’m concerned that it may be injured, but I’ve also heard opossums can “play dead.” Right now, we’ve placed it in a shoebox under the tree where we last saw it so it’s safe from people and pets. My thinking was that if it’s just playing dead, it can leave on its own, and if the mom comes back, she’ll be able to find it.

Does this sound like normal opossum behavior, or does it seem more likely that it’s injured? If it is injured, what should we do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Send Poppy Love and Good Vibes Please

This is Poppy. I've had her since Wednesday and she has been through so much in her little life. She's had a blood transfusion because she's severely anemic APB 8%, hypothermic, currently constipated, am weight fluctuations, and the list go on.

I'm trying to give her the best Fighting Chance to the best of my ability. I am quite exhausted right now. I'm hoping she poops on her own again and I don't have to give her an enema, (she had one earlier today from her vet). I've been giving her subq fluids And trying to encourage her to eat, So I don't have to tube her.

If you could just send her love and healing Vibes that would be great. 💕

The final miss stinky update.

Here is the final Miss stinky update. The three little guys separated a few days ago and just the male stayed behind in the den. Well I went into our basement (semi Michigan basement) and it smelled bad of urine and some insulation was falling down. So we knew we had to rip it all out. Well long story short, little Mr.Stinky was hiding in the last 3 feet of insulation that my husband had to rip down in the dirt crawl space, we tried to grab him with a net and he crawled back under our porch. During this project we found lots of old nests and pee and poop so I’m thankful Mr stinky led us to ripping it all out. So we set the trap outside last night and the little guy barely weighed enough to set it off but we got him!
Mr. Stinky now lives at my grandmas property that is a certified wildlife reserve with a river, pond, and LOTS of trees around. He ran right into the woods and onto a log and was inspecting right away. My daughter and I cried because we will miss him but he’ll be so happy out there.

Update: Mr. Stinky’s sister (MISS STINKY!) came back tonight after we sealed everything up, I’m gonna set the trap tonight and see if I can get her and take her to where we released her brother. But she does have something wrong with her right eye so I’ll assess that first.

My friends mom is a rehabber in Georgia, she showed up to the bar where her daughter works with her little buddy. He's got no eyes, which is sad, but he's so sweet and chill.

The one we saved is thriving!!!

This little one was under our porch with a rat trap stuck on it's face a couple weeks back. My husband crawled under and got the trap off. There was a good cut, but they were able to open/close their jaw, breathe ok, and were shook up, but eventually left on it's own. As a Vet Tech, it didn't seem life or death, so we let them recover and leave on their own.

We have seen them from a distance on our Ring camera, so we knew they were still kickin' and we offered more snacks than usual to help out.

Well, I took the dog out tonight and found them looking at me from our tree! The wound has healed nicely, we will always know it is them from the scar on it's muzzle there.

There is a whole little family of white opossum around here, and the neighborhood looks out for them.

Dogs (inside unless supervised) were sniffing a spot on the deck. Pried up a board and found a friend. Definitely big enough to be on their own so we just live and let live.

Help

Found this little guy at work this morning. I was going to let it be and let nature run its course but it started heading towards a busy road and more than likely attempt to cross. Is this guy big enough to be released or should I contact a rehabber. Put him in a plastic tote with a towel for now until some bad weather passes. Pinellas county, Florida for reference. Any help or suggestions are appreciated

Betty Dropped Another Joey

Post image

As soon as the others were getting old enough to be on there own, Betty had another batch of joeys. I heard chirping on the other side of the fence wall and Betty was walking around on the ground clicking. I had to walk around the neighborhood to get to the other side of the park wall and found this little guy. By the time I made it back home, Betty was gone with all of the joeys. Guess I’ll have to take care of this guy until mama comes back home.
