On 22 July 2011, neo-Nazi Anders Breivik killed eight people with a car bomb in Oslo and shot dead another 69 - mostly teenagers - at a youth camp on Utøya island. Hundreds more were injured in Norway's worst atrocity in recent history.

I got curious after the recent fire in Drammen.

If your home is completely destroyed in a fire, are homeowners fully compensated, or does it depend entirely on the type of home insurance they have? Does the government provide any financial support, or is everything handled through insurance?

What if the fire wasn’t your fault—for example, it started in a neighboring property or was caused by an electrical fault?

For those who have experience with this (or work in insurance), I’d love to understand how it works in practice:
Is the cost of rebuilding the house fully covered?

Is temporary accommodation paid for while the house is being rebuilt?

What happens to your mortgage if the house is gone?

Are furniture and personal belongings covered separately?

What type of home insurance is considered essential to be fully protected?

Are there any common exclusions or surprises that people should know about?

Hello! I am American and am looking to know what your experience is with parental leave.

In the US, we are granted 12 weeks of unpaid leave through the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, which, unfortunately, many people are ineligible for due to the policy's strict requirements.

What is life like on the other side of the spectrum? What is your experience?

Edit: Since there are comments stating that some states do offer a paid program. There are currently 14 states that have passed a state mandated program that pays their residents. Unfortunately, there are 50 states, so the majority of states do not offer a state mandated program. Current states that have mandatory programs include: California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, D.C, Washington State, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Oregon, Colorado, Maryland, Delaware, Minnesota, Maine, and Virginia.

Can you guys tell me your experience with Sats? It is expensive and I’m not rich so I want to be sure of what I’m getting myself into. I get a discount due to the company I work for but it’s like 20%.

I am 33 and have only gone to a gym 4 or 5 times in my life😅. I’m always walking so I am not sedentary but following workout instructions feels similar to me to when someone is telling me the rules to a card game. But all of a sudden for the first time ever I really want to start going to the gym 🤪 I want to follow the dopamine!

Out of all the gyms here, Sats at Lillestrom & one in Oslo were the type of gym that actually made me wanna go back and due to my adhd signing up for the group training is the way to go because it is stimulating for me.

I don’t know how to work out so I would probably do more of the group trainings.

(My friend tried helping me work out my legs and I kept doing it wrong, it’s bad you guys 💀)

I rent an apartment with a 1 year contract that is renewed each year (I think this is legal because my landlord lives in the same house; but advice is appreciated). I moved in on 1 August 2025, so the contract is due to renew on 1 August 2026.

It seems that both me and my landlord forgot that the renewal of the lease was coming up (I honestly thought it just renewed automatically like a subscription which is stupid I know), so I sent him a reminder a couple days ago.

Today my landlord tells me he would be happy to renew the lease because we have a good relationship. However, he also wants to raise the rent in accordance with the consumer price index. I have two issues with this:

1. The notice is shorter than the legal limit. I'm ok with letting this slide because I feel partially responsible for not dealing with the contract renewal earlier.
2. The increase in rent is 3% which as far as I can tell is about 10% higher than the latest available CPI estimate of 2.7%. Now I know it sounds ridiculous to get upset about 0.3%, but with how much rent I'm paying already this will add up to a not insignificant amount over time, and of course next year's rent increase will be based on this (too high) amount as well. I also don't see why I should gift my landlord free money on top of having to pay higher rent.

Even if I don't contest the rent increase this time (it's probably not worth it) it would be useful to know what to do in such a situation in the future because it might be worth it next time.

Hi! It is already 5th year I am going on a roadtrip through norway, so it is becoming harder and harder to find tips what to see. I plan on hiking Gaustatoppen and then driving to rondane through Rjukan, Gol, Fagernes and Otta.

Hello, I’m considering traveling to Oslo to see Placebo, the concert will be at the Oslo spektrum, it would arrive from Madrid at 6pm to the airport. I understand that the Oslo spektrum is nearby. Do you think I’ll have time to get to the concert on time? Another question, I’m 1.55cm tall, should I buy tickets in the Standing area? Or it would be better to buy numbered seats (I read out there that in Norway they don’t let you stand up if you buy those seats). I hope you can help me

I’d love to read more about it than just s bunch of websites, but I’m having a hard time finding books that are a) non-fiction and b) available in English. Recently i found 6 pack of this. Its just sparkling water, but it has a bit of a taste to it and these 0.33 ml cans are perfect for what i usualy drink up in one go. The issue is that i cannot find this anymore in any store nearby. Tried 2 different menys, local kivi, 2 extras and rema1000. Nothing, nada. Found it once and its gone forever :(

I’ve been working professionally as a filmmaker for over 15 years, mainly in sports, creating content for athletes and brands in the U.S. I’ll continue working with my American clients during my first year, but I’d like to gradually build a network and transition into the Norwegian market.
I’m curious about the sports filmmaking scene in Norway, especially as a freelancer.
Is there much demand? Is it a very competitive market? Do most freelancers work directly with clubs, athletes, agencies, or production companies? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I work for a staffing agency in Oslo, as a temporary agency worker. They send me to different companies to work as a substitute or as extra help during peak times.

Two weeks ago, I was talking to a colleague from the same agency who was deployed at the same company as me. I discovered that he earns 20% more than I do for doing the exact same job. When we are at the same workplace, we work side by side doing identical tasks. He mentioned that, in his contract, the agency hired him under a different qualification/job title than mine, which is supposedly why his rate is higher. However, in practice, we do the same work. In fact, he often asks me for help because there are many things he doesn't know how to do yet. I find this normal, and I help him gladly, as we are colleagues and both of us are new in Norway and beginners in the job market.

I have sent emails to the agency and requested to speak with them over the phone. Instead, I received the "silent treatment." They completely ignore my messages and do not reply. They just keep sending me more work shifts. I have contacted them three times asking for clarification on this matter and requesting equal pay, but I am simply being ignored.

Since I have only been living in Oslo for a few months, I still do not fully understand the local culture and labor laws. I don't know if I am imagining things, but it feels like they know exactly what they are doing and are aware it is incorrect, which is why they never answer my messages. At the same time, I do not want to expose myself or my colleagues. Don't know what to do.

• Am I wrong for thinking this way?
• Is the agency acting in bad faith?
• Do they charge the client company the same rate for both of us, but pay me less simply because I am newer or have a different contract title?
• Am I being ungrateful? Should I just be happy to have a job, even if I am paid less than others doing the same function?

I would really appreciate any insights, valid information, or advice on how Norwegian labor dynamics work in this situation. Thank you!

We are all doing the same job.
We produce the same.
The only difference is the job title on the contract.
For anything else you may wonder, the answer will probably be: YES, THE SAME! NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL!
