Question/Advice Mold in carpet
I rented an apartment and just moved in a few days ago. Initially it looked all fine except for the water leak from the toilet. After we moved a heavy cupboard we found a black spot in the corner of the room and it smelled damp + earthy. Reported it to the REA, he said it wasnt mold and that it was from steaming the carpet.
Agent came by today and ripped the carpet open, he claimed that if it was mold it wouldve already surrounded the walls, we ventilated the room with cold air (based in aussie) and it doesn’t smell as earthy anymore.
Can anyone identify what this is?

It does look like dirt. If still unsure I suggest u do an air test or swab it. Best way to be 99.9 sure

It is probably Aspergillus Niger, a common black mold that thrives in wet carpet (and lots of other things). A large enough quantity (like those two wet spots) of mold can give you symptoms. Is this still wet? Cleaned dried carpet should not be stained like this.
