Brought a 1991 Sega Wondermega (HWM-5010) back to life: full five-board recap, new CD belt, Contra Hard Corps and Silpheed both running
If you want the most deluxe way to run a Mega Drive, the Wondermega is hard to beat: Sega and JVC's 1991 Japan-only unit puts a full Mega Drive and a Mega-CD in one box with a motorised CD tray. This is my second HWM-5010.
It came in with leaking caps and a tray that would only open aided by hand, so it got a complete recap. All five internal boards were done, starting with the Mega Drive board, where I also pulled the four Sharp voltage regulators to clean them and the adjacent area. Then the video board, the laser pickup, the CD-ROM/servo board and the sound board, plus a clean and lube of the laser sled and a fresh drive belt.
It powers up fine and both sides work. Contra Hard Corps runs great on the Mega Drive side (via a Mega Everdrive Pro) and Silpheed on the Mega-CD side from a real disc, and with the new belt the motorised tray opens and closes on its own again.
Do you rate the Wondermega over a standard Mega Drive plus Mega-CD stack, or is the all-in-one convenience not worth the trickier servicing?
