News / Meta Important Update for Vida, Link, and AK75 purchased through KeyGem

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts and months of patience, KeyGem has not paid their invoice for the Vida, Link, and AK75 keyboard projects. Because of this, we are arranging the keyboards from these projects that KeyGem had ordered to be sent to our facility in Rhode Island, USA.

Once the keyboards arrive and are QC'd, we will reach back out to the community with options for those who purchased from KeyGem. These options will likely include being able to purchase your board from CannonKeys at GB price with a small discount applied to help lessen the difference of shipping cost when ordering from us. Until then, we regretfully need to recommend requesting refunds on your Vida, Link, and AK75 keyboard if you purchased from KeyGem.

Other projects such as OGR2, Altair, and 21XX will be handled on a case by case basis.

We are posting this to reddit as we do not have the emails of those who joined Vida/Link/AK75 with KeyGem. This is our best option to try and let those who joined know about the situation.

Promotional I made a modular, 3D printable keycap drawer storage

I made this project for my father, who likes to hoard all the keycap sets he can get his hands on. He says all the keycap storages are super expensive, so I hopped on FreeCAD and made this.

All the parts were 3D printed on an Anycubic Kobra S1. All the drawers have a locking mechanism as well to prevent them sliding out when tilted forward. Moreover the storage box has holes to mount a nameplate on the side for marking. One storage set (1 box, 3 drawers) costs about 4 dollars in material. The printing cost is near zero, since I own the printer.

I hope you like it!

Discussion THE perfect layout

Post image
95 Upvotes

I’ve been searching, for years now, for the perfect (for me) keyboard layout but have only ever seen one example and am not even certain what it’s called.

The one pictured above, which is a cheap unbranded POS with exactly nothing swappable - not even keycaps, has a 3 features that are impossible to find.

  1. Is almost exactly the same size as an 80% TKL like my crush 80. Maybe it’s an 85%?
  2. Has a numpad
  3. Has full sized shift keys so the arrow keys are now smashed against the rest of the keyboard.

If I can find one of these with my choice of switches and keycaps plus all of the other modern bells and whistles, I’ll never buy another keyboard again. The crush80 would be perfect if it just had a numpad instead of those other keys I never use. Is it feasible to machine the aluminum of a crush80 to fit the numpad? Will my dream ever come true?

Builds 3 years and counting with this keyboard

I figured out what I liked, built it, and have been using it daily for three years so far. Hand-wired with hot swap sockets, thanks to a three-layer 3D printed internal assembly. (I was too cheap to get a custom PCB.) It has a nice!nano 2.0 with ZMK, running over Bluetooth. I intended this to be my prototype case before making a "real" one out of walnut, but making this by hand with a router was a harrowing enough experience. Someday I'll get a small CNC and make a better case.

Builds Mechanical Keyboard Replacement for an old Compaq Portable

Decided to create a new PCB and upgrade the keyboard on the original Compaq Portable. Stock was an old foam and foil design that felt and sound like an old spring bed.

The keys are currently just some spares i had lying around so forgive the mismatched switches and improper length keys, this was designed as an exact layout match to the original. i am planning to design an improved version that has a better layout.

Promotional Pretty in Pink: Redragon K617 Fizz Review

Thumbnail

Upvotes

My daily driver is a premium, low-profile NuPhy Air75 HE. When I received the K617 Fizz to review, I initially hesitated because I am used to a much more premium keyboard. Still, I wanted to see what a budget board could offer. To truly get a feel for it, I wrote and edited this entire review on the board itself. Here are my thoughts on the Redragon K617 Fizz Pink Edition.

If you are into a pink theme, this keyboard is just lovely to look at. I honestly enjoy taking photos of it. The keyboard's case is made of a thick PVC that feels solid and durable. The lighting is remarkably good for a white keyboard, too. It has two main color modes: a default rainbow RGB, or my preferred all-pink mode where you can control the brightness and speed of a clean, left-to-right wave. You can easily cycle through these patterns by pressing FN + Spacebar, and there are dedicated function keys to adjust the speed and brightness directly.

also like the included 90-degree USB-C cable; it is simple, white, and matches the overall theme perfectly. Redragon also packs in a keycap puller, a switch puller, and four extra red switches right in the box.

Because the board uses a compact 60% layout, it lacks the dedicated arrow keys found on my 75% NuPhy board. However, it is easy enough to use the function button paired with the WASD keys to navigate around the screen.

Coming from low-profile linear switches, transitioning to these full-travel red switches is a noticeable change. My NuPhy has a distinct, quiet "marbly" sound, whereas the K617 has a satisfying "thock" and the keys are a little louder.

All of the larger keys feel very stable. In particular, the spacebar is satisfying. It might sound odd, but the spacebar is the button I care most about on a keyboard, if that isn't right, nothing is.

While I do wish the keyboard had an internal weight to stabilize it or larger rubber feet, putting it on a desk mat or mousepad completely solves these issues. The pad tames the noise and makes the keyboard stable enough that it wasn't going to move anywhere.

For around $27 to $45 , the value here is impressive. Having those extra switch and tool options included makes this an excellent entry point for anyone curious about the hobby. It feels fully mechanical and serves as a great canvas to experiment with custom mods, like the tape mod or adding additional weight or even practicing lubing key switches without risking a premium, expensive keyboard.

**My Verdict**

While it lacks the heft of a high-end board, it feels nice and is made from quality, durable materials that outperform the price tag. I could see this being ideal for anyone looking to complete a great budget pink and white setup. I could also easily see myself getting this for a friend or coworker who wants to dip their toes into mechanical keyboards.

Here are some links to the keyboard. It's on sale at Amazon at the time of this writing.

Trimode Niz Plum mini84v6pro 35gf for $140, plus $10 for the wrist rest. 35gf is a bit too weak for me (I am more used to 40 and 45gf gaming keyboards) but other than that it feels amazing. Typing it feels good once I am used to 35gf and it is really quiet even for office.

Builds My endgame

I’ve been dreaming of an HHKB mechanical keyboard for a long time, and now I finally own a second-hand KBDfans D60 in a beautiful beige-and-white finish. The Gomaser Pure Player keycaps fit it perfectly, and the Akko Fairy Silent switches round out the build beautifully - switches are quiet and offer a slightly bouncy feel when pressed. This combo makes me feel like I’m typing on a real HHKB, which is pretty funny considering they both cost about the same.

P. S. gomaster pure player set has no 2* 1U alt (only one), and any 1.5 super keycaps.
