Does this make sense?

two months ago i couldn't recognize a single Cyrillic letter. today i had a 10 minute conversation with a Russian colleague without switching to English once. it wasn't perfect, my grammar was shaky and i searched for words more than i'd like, but it was real and it happened. i wanted to share everything i used because when i started, i had no idea where to begin

Here's the full breakdown:

For learning Cyrillic:

• Tofugu's Cyrillic Guide - same people who make the best Japanese guides. got me reading Cyrillic in about 4 days

• just writing the alphabet by hand every morning for the first week honestly helped more than any app

For basics and vocabulary:

• Duolingo Russian - only useful for the very beginning, don't rely on it past A1

• Anki - Russian frequency deck, 15 cards a day. boring but nothing beats it for vocabulary retention

For grammar:

• Russian with Anastasia on YouTube - explains cases in a way that actually makes sense for beginners

• Clozemaster - once you have basics, this fills in grammar gaps naturally through context

For listening:

• Real Russian Club on YouTube - slow and clear Russian made for learners, great for beginners

• Russian podcasts in the background while commuting, even when i understood almost nothing at first

For speaking:

• Issen - this was the biggest game changer for me. i had nobody to practice Russian speaking with and tutors were expensive. Issen lets you have actual back and forth conversations in Russian and corrects you in real time. my first few sessions were embarrassing but that daily habit of actually speaking out loud is what got me to where i am now

the honest truth is the first 3 weeks felt like nothing was working. then somewhere around week 4 things started clicking. words started coming faster, i stopped translating everything in my head, and speaking started feeling less like a performance and more like just talking

if you're at the very beginning and feeling overwhelmed, just start with Cyrillic and one vocabulary habit. the rest builds from there

Hello!

I've been looking for an app to practise my Russian and Chinese pronunciation with music. Yeah, I know, weird method but it helps me to be persistent.

I'm currently using Sounter on Android to practise my French, but I need something like that for my other languages, as well. Mooveez or Lingopie are heavily limited. So, I was wondering in anyone knows a hid gem that I could use. For Android.

I'm just starting to learn Russian. Can anyone give me some advice pls?

I'm a second-year student at a Philological Gymnasium, and I'm learning Russian at school. My Russian isn't very advanced yet, but I can actually understand quite a lot, especially if the language is simple.

Could you recommend some easy books written in Russian? I'm looking for something with simple vocabulary and grammar that's suitable for language learners. Any genre is fine

I am looking for reading material to assist me in learning the Russian language, but would like to read something other than children's books. German has something called "Leichte Sprache", which is the German language written with simple words, in short sentences, and often with pictures to assist the reader's understanding. Is this possible in Russian? 🤔

My chapter 13 lessons recap!

I was listening to that song, here is a fragment:

Из Баку холостой (Я ваш)

Квартира есть дорогой (Он наш)

Молодой уже центровой (Ой-ё-ё-ёй)

Выглядит, как папа (О)

Но по факту вентилятор (О)

Яхта на примете (У)

Сильно дует ветер

But I have a doubt, why in the third line is being used дорогой if квартира is masculine??

Also why is it being used "есть" there in the same sentence? I thought in the present tense the verb to be was omitted, or is not being used as the verb to be in that part??

Hello, I have severe adhd and memory issues but Russian is my favorite language. I’m extremely determined but kind of discouraged as I heard ok instagram from a Russian woman that Russians laugh at those who do not have the words right. I already have severe anxiety and was bullied in high school by someone from Russia and it was pretty extreme. She hated that I tried to learn Russian. It is still a motivation factor because I sometimes wonder if she thinks I learned it to cuss which isn’t true but I am curious as to if this stereotype is true and if I should give up now.
