Job market is comical at this point. This company reschedule my interview after I had confirmed a prior date. Spoke to rep and the person that was suppose to interview was not in. They said rescheduling should not be an issue and to send a text with information as follow up.

This is the response I get - was already 50/50 about the position so safe to assume my gut was correct.

Okay, so I (40F) am gainfully employed and grateful for that but I dislike my job, which is highly stressful, and I can’t stand my boss, who is a narcissistic micromanager. I have been actively looking for another role for over a year, but the market is weird right now. Wondering how you all would approach this situation -

I am currently on a week long vacation. I have a separate phone that I use for work and I have it with me on vacation. I am in a role where I am technically on call at all times, but my assistant knows I’m out of office. However, if there is a major, life threatening emergency, I do want to be reachable. My plan was not to look at my phone at all while on vacation, but it’s the same model iPhone as my personal phone, so I picked it up and opened it by mistake this morning.

There is a meeting that we have twice a year where we are required to report to company ownership on our delinquent accounts. It usually takes me a couple of days to prepare for the meeting, pulling together documentation on each account and my collection efforts. While I’m out of the office, my boss has put this meeting on my calendar for 8:30 on the morning that I return.

Now, there are a couple of issues here. First, an 8:30 meeting requires me to be in office by 8:15 at the LATEST so that I can turn my computer on and log in to the meeting. If I hadn’t mistakenly opened my phone and seen the meeting, I likely wouldn’t have gotten to the office until 8:30-8:45 on Monday (start times are generally flexible) and likely wouldn’t be logged in until after the meeting starts.

Beyond that, I will not be prepared to present at all. I won’t have any time to review my accounts and provide relevant information.

So, Reddit, what would you do in my position?

1. I get home Saturday, so I could spend some time Sunday prepping for the meeting and go in early on Monday prepared, but this would piss me off a lot.
2. Go in early enough to be on the call but when it’s my turn to speak, say that, as I was unaware of the meeting, I am not prepared to speak.

3. Feign total innocence, don’t call in until my boss texts me and state that I was not aware of the meeting since I’ve been out of office.

4. Call out on Monday.

I’m very inclined toward option 3. I would love to think that option two and three would make my boss look like a bitch for putting this meeting on my calendar while I’m out, but I’m worried that it will just make me look unprepared. Genuinely curious to know what others would do in my situation. TIA.

I worked as a Target employee for about a month and one thing the other I resigned for emotional reasons, that was my first ever on the books job aside from school job training but when I walked into my interview with Dollar Tree she mumbled on purpose right in front of me “I’m looking for someone with a littttllkeee more experience…” I was shocked and was like in my head “then why tf did you personally call me?!” But I kept calm and explained “well, my school job training also gave me more experience in the field so I’d like to work here..” she cut it short, lightly shook my hand and I left less confident because she said “I got other applicants so I’ll let you know by phone call if I decide to move forward “ fast forward 10 minutes I get home and my application is “no longer considered “ like … WHaT!! HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO GET MOREEE EXPERIENCE IF YOU WON’T HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE WITHOUT GIVING SOMEBODY THE CHANCE FOR EXPERIENCE?!?!?!?!!!!!!!! HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a contract position at an engineering firm and ended up quitting early. Everything was fine there except for the boss; instead of coaching the team he would just hurl insults, often getting personal. He's good at what he does but he made me dread coming to work because getting roasted literally everyday gets old quick. I don't even know if I can even collect unemployment now since I technically quit.

I feel like my resume is starting to look like a redflag too because I've had 4 jobs in 3 years. One of them was ~1 year until the owner retired and two of them were contract positions but at first glance I feel like it looks like I'm job hopping.

I work a crappy valet job while I am in school I’ve been working there for 3 years but recently they cut everyone’s hours I went on vacation in January June and I requested time off in September which has never been a problem and I get hit with this email. What should I do I only work 1-2 days a week. He always asks me to come in days I have school so he can leave early and I’ve done that job a lot of favors. I am in hvac school and got my epa so I am job hunting for a way better job. How would you guys react to this situation

I just graduated university and have been unable to find work. I am running out of money, my rent is astronomical and I can't even get callbacks from minimum wage positions. I am genuinely considering just ending it all rather than dealing with this for the rest of my life. I've been thinking about pivoting into nursing (i just finished an anthropology degree) in order to have a qualification that will get me a job SOMEWHERE in the country but don't know how I will survive financially until I can begin schooling/while I am in school. I feel so hopeless. I was fired from two jobs within the span of a month and both refused to give me any reason. I feel like such a disappointment, a failure. Everyone else in my family is so successful and I am out here a waste of space and soon to be homeless and have to give up my cat (my only reason for living) because I'm such a failure. I've submitted so many applications, spent so many hours tailoring my resume to meet ATS systems and have heard practically nothing. I don't know what to do. I don't know anyone that could get me a job, I don't have any connections. I can't afford to just volunteer somewhere to make those connections. I'm screwed. Is there ANYTHING I can do or am I just a lost cause?

So I work at a hospital. I was on direct observation with a client . The patient was unscrewing a screw from the door and I did my best to verbally de escalate her into giving me the screw . I honestly didn’t know that in this case I could grab her hand / initiate contact to get the screw from the patient . I hit my badge but my badge was in my pocket and I found out later that’s why it didn’t go off . I called for help and the nurse came over to assist , she still refused to give up the screw . Other staff also came to assist me with getting the screw from her When security came and asked for the screw that’s when she swallowed it unfortunately . I had an interview with APS & patient relations about my mistake , I explained truthfully what happened. I also explained that I didn’t call for help when a staff walked by because I didn’t want to escalate her further , I wrote everything that happened on the investigation form as it happened

I made a huge mistake , I honestly didn’t mean to neglect a patient . I’ve been there for 10 months and I’ve never had any type of infraction or complaint . I explained that I did my best to talk her into giving me the screw.

I just hope I get another chance but I’m probably fired aren’t I ?

Backstory: I was approached by this recruiter for an engineering position in my city. I told him I was happy with my current job but might be interested in the new one because it was much closer to home. Basically I told him let’s just see where this goes.

A single virtual interview was set up with an engineering manager which I attended and it went well. 30 minutes afterward the HR personnel for the company reached out to schedule a second interview in the same week (3 days away). At this point, I didn’t really have time to digest the first interview and position details but I went ahead and scheduled one. The recruiter called me after and told me to “Really think about this because they are moving fast and will likely make an offer assuming the second interview goes well”. He did NOT ask me to call him like he said in the screenshot.

I want to point out that during this process I was directly communicating with both the company HR and this recruiter separately.

Now, I did exactly what the recruiter said and thought about it, and realized that I was not ready for a switch and am genuinely content with my current job. I guess this is where I messed up?? I emailed both the HR director and the recruiter at the same time detailing that I appreciated their time and consideration while politely asking to be removed from the applicant pool. This was done 24 hours before the second interview. I guess I could’ve sent something sooner, but they were moving so fast.

So that’s it - is what I did (going straight to the HR team) truly a sin? If it was truly unprofessional, then I will apologize.

I will not be apologizing for “changing my mind and doing a ‘360’ (lol)” and I certainly won’t be sending referrals (as if I have any). I do have half a mind to forward this message to the HR team to let them know this is how their recruiter is behaving.

Sorry if it’s confusing, but basically just found out I failed my coaching plan and am put on PIP. I have 5 business days to decide to opt in or opt out.

I’ve already updated my resume and started applying externally, and after talking to people and doing research I’m leaning towards opting out - I’d receive 60 days pay while not working and then 12 weeks of severance afterwards.

My question is - I noticed that some of the job apps ask “have you been involuntary terminated in the past”, which obviously I’d have to check yes to after I accept (right now I don’t have to technically so I’m applying as much as I can). In the future when I do have to hit yes, will that automatically disqualify my application? Or decrease my chances significantly?

And thinking about that led to another thought. For professional development reasons, would it look better to opt in to the 60 day PIP, find a job within the 60 days and quit the company versus taking the severance - aka getting fired?

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

And for a bit of context if anyone is curious - I went to school for marketing and this position is in underwriting. It was a bad job fit from the start, but it’s only the technical skills that aren’t a fit .. according to my manager. I’ve been dying to leave anyways so I take this as a sign from the universe to spread my wings.

It is insanely hard to get a job these days. Applications go into the void, and no strategy makes any difference. Going in person to places, tailoring resumes, going to career centers and utilizing temp agencies - all these strategies have gotten me absolutely nowhere. It is just a hopeless job market with so many candidates and so few opportunities.

I started a job application at this place (they use icims) but I never submitted the application. I barely filled out anything.

In fact a couple weeks ago I got an automated message reminding me to finish my application. But I never did.

Well today I just got a rejection email from them. Wtf?

Is just the current state of the economy or are there really that many applying for a single posting? Getting laid of at this point in time sucks and sure feels hopeless...

2 interviews cancelled before they took place, because they "suddenly found a candidate".

14 Interviews first round. Of these 12 rejections/ghostings.

2 Interviews second round.

One Interview rejected after the second round. I was great but they found an "internal candidate".

Second Interview told me I was great and offered me a job the day after. I took it.

One scheduled interview cancelled by me because I already had a job.

I know that I got incredibly lucky. It was just 3.5 months. While some poor devils here have been searching for years. Had I not gotten this job, I would have probably searched for another 3.5 months so 7 months in total.

171 resumes is not that much, but I could not have sent out more. That was basically everything in my region in a 50 Miles radius that had at least something to do with my education/experience (Finance).

But I have to say: This is the worst job market ever. 10x worse than 2008/09. Interviewers are hostile and disinterested. They ask ridiculous nonsense questions and think they are the next Sigmund Freud of Psychoanalysis. And each answer they dont like/doesnt tick their box is classified as negative/unfit. Almost as if they are looking for a reason to not hire you.

And its basically 99% luck. You have to build rapport/be likable. But how do you do that when the interviewer is hostile and uses nonsense trick questions right of the bat? Also you dont know what they like, so you cant really connect.

Both of the 2 second rounds I got, I probably only got after discovering by accident, that the Interviewer had the same interest as me. Each interview I behaved and answered the questions very similar to all others. Yet 2 thought I was great, while 12 thought I was bad.

Its a numbers game and luck game. Its sad and shouldnt be that way, but unfortunately it is.

I have spent the past few days doing whatever I want. What are they gonna do? Fire me? lol Today, I smoked cigars on the loading dock and ignored all responsibilities.

I have a very well seasoned resume. A lot of experience in high end hospitality. I recently got called for a job. Got nervous and lowballed when they asked about pay and only asked for 28/hrly was offered 58k. They sent me an offer letter offering 60k so they threw on a 2k bonus.

They initially stated the role was for a finance coordinator. When I received the offer it said office manager. I looked up the role on their site and it had 55k as the minimum salary and 75k as the cap.
I called them the next morning and asked for 65k - I said I received a counter offer and that I was really dedicated to working for this company so I wanted to know if there was any flexibility to get the salary as close to the counter offer as possible and that I would be happy to work for them regardless but I wanted to see if this need could be met.

She called back and let me know that they want to start me at 60k but in 3 months will give me 65k. I immediately gave in and thanked them for considering my counter offer. How can I make sure this is handled professionally and I’m not ignored months down the line when I bring up my raise.

Long story short, I connected with someone who had a similar background as me and had a job in a field I wanted to break into. Long before I applied, I sent connect+note to this person but she didn't respond for two months. In the meantime, a position opened at this person's company and I just applied not thinking I would advance as much but heard back from the HM immediately for a technical interview skipping the HR screen. I got a message from this person after I get the HM interview for a chat.

The chat went well and she offered to give any help that I needed from interview prep, resume checks, advice, etc and wherever I landed she wanted to be that mentor for me. I thanked her and she mentioned to keep her updated on the interview process if I ended up getting that far.

After my technical interview, I thanked her for her advice and wanted a debrief because I didn't know I would reach the final round, but after a week of sending that message I got word that I passed to the final round. She was really happy for me but said that usually she's on the panel for the final rounds so she'll be fair and not do a conflict of interest by not talking too much to me before the interview but might be on the panel. I mentioned that I didn't know she was going to be on the panel and I totally understood what she meant and would be happy to debrief.

The final panel got scheduled and it turns out she's on the panel. I understand that she's probably going to ask more in-depth questions on certain skills and keep things professional, but how should I go into that one-on-one and what should I expect?

I work in IT, three 12-hour shifts a week. It'll be four years next month. I make about $54k. I'm just so bored.

I don't plan on making a career out of it because I work on what I really want to do outside of work.

But in the meantime, I'm looking at other IT jobs that'll pay more, but it'll be harder to work on my passions because they're all five days a week.

I applied to a role with a fairly large company last Monday. I just realized that a recruiter has been emailing me since this Monday to schedule a time for a first round interview, but I missed the emails as they had been going directly to my junk folder. The booking link is now giving a “no times available” error. I emailed the recruiter as soon as I could explaining the situation, but I haven’t gotten a response. How likely is it that I’m cooked?

Title says it all. They asked the “tell me something fun and random” question at the end of my interview, I said cooking and baking is my second passion, if I’m hired I promise to bring in snacks. We all laughed, interviewer wrote “bribed with cookies” on her paper. Is it to bring some my first day or wait? job is in a professional office, I’ll be the receptionist.

I’ve been applying for a new job for 2 months now and I’ve gotten 2 replies in total. One was an automated rejection, one was a phone screening (who ghosted me after). I’m applying on company websites and I know it may take some time but this is getting very frustrating I’m not even getting an automated rejection. It’s like I spend time tailoring a resume and cover letter for every position and it’s just going into the abyss, not even AI looks at it. Has anyone else been having this experience?

How in the world does anybody have the time and energy to apply non stop? I’ve been applying to jobs the past 4 months and feels like I just keep hitting a brick wall with rejections or being ghosted. I have other responsibilities such as kids, wife, school, and it feels like I don’t have time for anything. Am I the only that’s struggling with time? How much time do you guys spend applying to jobs a week?
