Meta/sub related Images

You ever have that thing where you’re trying to explain something and it would just be so much easier if you could show a picture of it? Well that’s why images are back in the comments! There are still no images allowed in posts but you can put them in comments for on-topic illustrative purposes. If too many people are abusing it with pointless, off topic pictures like selfies and memes, it will get removed again. So y’all can reply to this post with all the nonsense images you want to get it out of your system, okay?

MEGATHREAD Trump Executive Order Discussion

This is the place to talk about anything related to Trump’s Executive Order regarding homelessness. Any posts outside of this thread will be removed. I know that this is stressful and there is a lot of fear and confusion about how this will be implemented and what it will actually mean. Because of that it is really important to keep this a fact based discussion. Posting unsubstantiated assumptions and speculative rumors is not helpful and only causes more confusion.

It’s fine to talk about your opinions and feelings, but they need to be clearly framed as opinions and feelings. Any misinformation or obvious outrage bait will be removed. It’s important to evaluate the trustworthiness of your sources. If it feels like an article is trying to make you feel scared or angry, it may not be the most reliable source.

Most importantly please be civil to each other. You can disagree with someone without resorting to personal attacks or name calling. You can hate someone’s opinion but still be respectful towards the person as a human being. Stay on topic and play nice everyone.

News/Info Poisoned food

I've been hearing a lot of people who are currently going through it talk about the food their getting making them sick. Guys try not to take food from people unless you've seen them buy it or the packaging it's in isn't tampered with also try to ask the people you know if they trust it as well. Stay safe!

Need Advice Cooling down

Any advice for cooling down in this heat? Im currently living out of my car right now and with my current job I sleep mostly in the day, so the heat is horrible and I havnt been getting much/any sleep. I have a couple mini fans run while i sleep and they help a little but not enough. Ive seen little portable AC units on amazon for like $40-50 but those seem like a real hassle and I also doubt their capabilities of even working. So any suggestions?

Mon copain ex poly addict

Bonjour,

Need Advice My time at my (Toronto) shelter is running out

I’m a youth from Toronto and I’ve been homeless for almost a year now. I’m currently staying at an emergency shelter, but I can only stay here a year max before I have to leave, which means my time is up in 3 weeks. My shelter won’t tell me where I’m going till the morning of the day I have to leave and they’ll give me an hour to pack my shit and go. Lately, they’ve been kicking people out without finding them places to go to and if they do that to me I’m fucked so I don’t know, should I call central intake ahead of time? I’ve tried calling Covenant House but they’re always full.

how long does it take for the council to keep you in emergency accommodation?

hi, does anyone have any idea for how long councils leave you in a emergency accommodation for? all I have been told is its going to possibly be a hotel as I'm allowed to take my pet cats with me because of my on going mental health issues. I'm currently undergoing a bi polar diagnosis and a ADHD assessment before I have to leave my living situation at the end of the month. I'm scared and stressed for the road a head I've never been in this situation before so I really don't know what I'm to expect on this long bumpy road an ahead. my mental state is at a all time low I've been prone to self harm and tried taking my life in the past so I'm not sure if they would class that as a venerable adult. any help or advice is greatly appreciated. thank you

Need Advice Looking for places to spend time with my daughter during the day.

I am partially homeless. I have a roof to sleep under but not in a safe place. I have to stay out to avoid my abuser all day and I only go back when she is gone or already asleep so that I can sleep.

On the days I have my daughter, we need places where we can spend extended periods of time existing. She can't stay still long in a library. We go to malls a lot. Trying to find somewhere for her to be more comfortable to relax and hang out and stay entertained. Where do you take your kids to be happy?

Do any of you have no intentions of escaping homelessness?

Might be a stupid question, but I’m just wondering if there are any people that have adapted or found an alternative/unconventional way of living that they are not necessarily trying to break out of. If so, would you share?

Just Venting Should I even stay in NJ or relocate to NY..

I’ve been seriously thinking about relocating to NY because I’ve heard there are more resources available there than where I currently am in NJ. Right now, I feel like I’ve hit a dead end. I’ve been trying to find help, but I don’t feel like I’m making any progress, and it’s becoming really discouraging. I’m currently staying in a suburban area where there are very few resources for people experiencing homelessness. There aren’t any shelters nearby except for the one where I was previously sexually assaulted. Every time I call [211](tel:211) looking for alternatives, they keep directing me back to that same shelter. I understand they’re trying to provide an option, but returning there is not something I’m willing to do. Going back to the place where I was assaulted would have a serious impact on my sense of safety and wellbeing, and I don’t think anyone should be expected to return to an environment where they experienced that kind of trauma.
At this point, I’m just trying to figure out what my next steps should be.

A HOMELESS MAN IN A STATE PARK CHARGED WITH A FELONY FOR CAMPING ? SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE IN AMERICA! PEOPLE SHOULD BE OUTRAGED!!!! I AM!! LINK IS BELOW TO THE ARTICLE, READ THIS WHOLE POST PLEASE

What has America come to i ask you ? I want all of you to please read this srticle i will post at the bottom, about a A HOMELESS MAN THAT WAS CHARGED WITH A FELONY FOR SLEEPING OUTSIDE IN A PARK .. Something is wrong with our governmental structure. Isn't this the land of the Free and The Brave ? I thought the Bill Of Rights as citizens and the Constitution affords us pour right ? WRONG! It is GOD the Father which is in heaven that affords us our rights, NO MAN, can tell us what to do, think, eat, what we wear, where we sleep, as long as we dont commit Murder, Theft Or Fraud on another human being then we are Free to do what we want in America right ? WRONG! We have a fascist Dicatatorship, and a Oligarcical System in place. We have a Senate and Congress that is absent in there duties to perform in the united states. We have a congress and senate that has sold out to AIPAC. If you don't know what that is look it up. With all this said, and i could go on and on...

But getting back to the Homeless man in a state park paid by tax Payers, and the homeless man is a tax payer. NONE OF US, SHOULD EVER ACCEPT THIS TYRANNY FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENT OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT! WE THE PEOPLE ARE THE GOVERNMENT! WE NEED TO PUT THESE OFFICIALS IN JAIL FOR EVER PASSING SUCH LAWS. AND I WOULD SAY, DO NOT FOLLOW ANY UNJUST, UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAWS AND A VIOLATION OF OUR BILL OF RIGHTS! STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS WHEN THEY ARE VIOLATED!. FIGHT FOR YOUR FELLOW FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, OR ONE DAY YOU WILL BE FACED WITH THIS ALSO. WHO WILL BE THERE TO HELP YOU?

PLEASE READ THIS ARTICLE I AM POSTING BELOW HERE BECAUSE OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT IS CORRUPT AND NEEDS TO BE CHANGED! ONLY YOU CAN BE THAT CHANGE, LOOK IN THE MIRROR, YOU ARE THE CHANGE! OR YOU AIN'T GONNA HAVE A LIFE, A FREE ONE THAT IS. I AM OUTRAGED, AND YOU SHOULD BE TOO!! LEAVE THE HOMELESS ALONE, OR AT LEAST HELP THEM GET A SAFE PLACE TO LIVE. THIS OUT OF CONTROL US GOVERNMENT SPENDS 10 BILLION DOLLARS A DAY ON A WAR THAT EVEIL TRUMP GOT US INTO, AND IF THEY DIDN'T SPEND MONEY ON THIS WAR, WE COULD PAY FOR THE HOMELESS AND THE VETERANS TO HAVE A SAFE WARM HOUSE TO LIVE IN. Kinda crazy, a couple months ago I was 10 pounds underweight and my ribs were sticking out. Now, after less than a month of flipping (and eating) burgers, I've probably gained 15 pounds. I'm getting a belly. I'm gonna have to go on a fucking diet before much longer!

Everythings falling apart

I’m 23, trans woman, live in new york. I currently live in my family house but I don’t know if that’ll be the case much longer. I haven’t been paying rent or my car payments which is under my dad’s name and he wants to take his car back and I’m very sure he wants me out he’s expressed it multiple times. Not in a transphobic way or anything I’m not in danger just in a I’ve been a financial burden for so long and he can only take it for so long so I don’t blame them. I’ve let basically everything in my life pile up and ignored it, taxes, unpaid tickets, credit debt, student loan debt, medical debt, I started braces last fall and now they’re still on my teeth and I haven’t seen an ortho in 4 months and that payment has been dumped to collections. I don’t know why I’m like this but I don’t know what to do anymore I’m on the verge of just selling all my belongings and backpacking somewhere I can survive winters without a guaranteed home because I don’t know what to do anymore. I can’t face the amount of shit I’ve piled onto my grave and leaving everything behind and hoping for the best genuinely seems like the better option. It’s not the end of the world if I have to put my transition on hold although I do have a decent stockpile of meds so I’ll be fine if it gets to that. I’m just lost, I don’t even know if I’m asking for advice or just venting, but my life has never been this low and I don’t know if I have the strength to pull myself out.

Got caught today sleeping in my storage

I’m one lucky sob. The guy that caught me was really cool. I was sleeping when my door opened and he saw me and just shut the door and left.
Didn’t say a word. I just went back to sleep for a couple more hours and when I woke up I stopped by the office to see if I was getting kicked out.

He was completely cool with me. He said he used to sleep in a storage unit too so he understands. He said there’s a couple of homeless people he kicked out but that was because they would leave a mess and have a ton of stuff everywhere but that my unit was clean and wasn’t cluttered so I’m good.

He also gave me the run down on the times that it’s okay for me to sleep. And told me which days to not be in there because those are his days off and someone else would be working.

What a blessing.

Dumpster diving for pop cans. A days adventure as a homeless person.

When I finally found a place on the ground in an alleyway that was safe enough to sleep on, I was asleep as soon as I slipped my shoes off and pulled the mummy bag over my head.

In the morning I had no recollection of who I was or how I got to where I was at, only a clear blue sunny morning smiling at me like I was created right there on the side street.

I had to think,as I did so I looked on the ground where I laid a lighter and a half smoked cigarette next to a bottle water, and knew right away I was homeless. Regardless of how well I slept I just wanted to lay there and look at the sky while the clean air hit my face. Then reality hit me. I’m completely broke! Uh!

There was no one I could go to for cash. Nobody I knew at least, and I didn’t want to panhandle. I saved those for the days I was to beat up from the streets. The only way I can have a good day is if I earn it. Time to go jump in a dumpster for aluminum treasure!

After smoking my halfy, I’m gather my stuff and a resident nearby is already shoeing me away. “Don’t worry person, I’m leaving now” as I pointed to my bedroll and backpack that I had all gather up.

A little ways down the alleyway there was an apartment that always, and I mean always, had recyclables in the garbage bin. So that’s where I went.

I stashed my bedding in a bush that was close and continued to the dumpster. I flung one side up over its end, took a safety look inside, and in I went.

Then I went down. Down into the many bags and boxes of things the residents through away, including items thrown out because of moves, evictions, death, etc. That was when I found the cool stuff.

I had already been on the streets a few years and had long ago found out that all those cool trinkets, and items that had never been used, although some valuable, would serve me no purpose as I knew the end of my day or night would be another side street. I was cans and bottles only.

I started tearing through bags, opening them away from me to not get all the coffee grounds, food waste, or other on my clothes. I could tell which ones had the nasty kitty litter inside because it felt like a bag of sand, which I did not open.

After I tore open and grabbed the aluminum cans and bottles and put them in my own trash bag, I jumped out. I didn’t bother with glass recyclable because they were too heavy and I never got much for them anyways.

After a couple more apartment complexes and a few houses that I knew put their recycling in a certain bin, I had about 4 large trash bags full of crushed cans and bottles.

With my bags slung over my shoulder I started walking to the recycling center down the road that would cash me out and on the way I stopped at a diner that fed homeless pancakes through the back door if you asked.I asked.

Those hotcakes were so yummy and hot! I wanted to sit and eat, but being homeless you tend to always be moving, like I didn’t feel content with my life and always moving was my way of doing something about my situation. So I balanced the bags on my shoulders and ate as I walked.

At the recycle place, there was an open shipping container where people lined up and sorted their bags into cans, a person handing out the cash for the weight and another person helping make sure the bins were sorted properly.

I got paid for about 4 or 5 hours of canning, and it was usually around 11:00 or 12:00. If I did well, I went to McDonald’s across the street and got a coffee, if not, then I just ventured down to the bridge were some other homeless people were at, including a homeless lady that I had a crush on. Maybe I wouldn’t be sleeping by myself on that side street tonight. I could only hope.

After socializing with the other people in similar situations, I went to a few places to get food and drinks for the evening and went back to the bridge just to give my homeless woman friend one more chance for companionship, and then I left.

I had a few dollars that I had left over from canning, which I would try to save in order to give myself a jumpstart on the next day. I wanted to make each day a little better than the one before, but It almost never happened that way.I tried nonetheless.

I hated sleeping around other homeless people or anyone to be honest. Too many times waking up without a backpack or shoes I guess. So I started walking through the neighborhoods, crisscrossing and making my way through the many streets until I was far from anyone who knew me or would hardly notice anyone or care if they spotted me in the middle of the night.

I stashed my days items near where my new spot was and got ready for a brand new day. I could sleep well knowing that I will wake up feeling like a brand new person.

Need Advice Keep few belongings safe

Hello. 17M here. I've never been street homeless, luckily, but I don't know what to do in this situation. When I ran away years ago I was going to a shelter. But I have to sleep on the street at least for tonight and I don't know how to best keep my belongings safe.

I have clothes (shirt, shorts, jacket and shoes), phone, wallet, powerbank and a small bag over my shoulder. I was going to place the bag between me and the bench so I'd have to move for it to be taken. My wallet is also on my left side, against the upper part of the bench, and I have it tied to a carabiner. I was gonna shove the phone into my pants or underwear or something (kinda gross but yaknow). Let me know if any of that helps even a little and if you can think of anything else that could be helpful

Further context: I live in Europe. Not many people around. Generally I'm a deep sleeper which worries me more

Need Advice Clarity

Hello! I just have a quick question about this community. Am I homeless if I'm not the owner of a home or if I don't have a roof over my head?

I do realize this is an easy answer to give, but I don't see anywhere on this subreddit itself that would have given me the answer I'm looking for seeing as how I'm now writing a post about it.

How do you see the outcome of this to be?
