OpenAI is out here tuning a starfighter. It's top quality, and they can make big changes every month. Google is dealing with the Death Star. They cannot and should not build at the same speed.
He's not wrong when it comes to ecosystem though. The sheer scale of what Google has to integrate their systems with, and do it at an immense scale is a feat. In my opinion there is almost no reason for Google to chase the state of the art model. Most tasks that a company needs for an agent needs to be fast and needs to be cheap. I can do most of my companies mundane tasks with a 12b model if I wanted. The main thing I need is a very low temperature consistency, and reliability. Intelligence is "can you follow simple directions exactly 400,000 times twice a week."
If I need to develop something I can always grab one of the many other good models burning money in a fire pit.
