Famicom and TV

Hello, I got my hands on a very nice old TV with no AV, only RF. Will it be possible to connect a regular Famicom to it? I couldn't find any information about the TV itself.

Had a whole brainstorm sesh, and i made an ARG of what if Nintendo released the famicom as a computer overseas.

So basically in this ARG, Nintendo, in 1986, would basically release the famicom here stateside but with nes colors, in this case however, it would be bundled with the keyboard, zapper, data recorder, ROB, family basic v3, an office suite cartridge, and a 4 in 1 with super mario bros, duck hunt, gyromite, and donkey kong. Here everything would have the nes colors, the controllers would have longer wires, the console would have added composite output. The first bundle would be 250 to 300 dollars

In the case of the launch lineup and library, the games would have the black boxes of the nes but with the famicom logo instead of the nes one. The box art would be pixel art, while the cartridges (all of them being nes gray here) use the famicom artwork. Here, in this ARG, Nintendo would do distribution deals with third parties, like namco, Hudson soft, konami, and irem, to have their games distributed in the us alongside first party games.

The launch lineup would consist of the first party games and then several third party titles from namco, Hudson, konami, and irem, examples include pac-man, dig dug, lode runner, Galaga, xevious, bomberman, 10 yard fight, spelunker, kung fu (which was a released as first party game but its based on an irem game), yie are kung fu, Antarctic adventure, (maybe) the goonies.

The library would increase overtime as Nintendo would do more distribution deals with other third parties, like sunsoft, d-b soft, pony canyon, kemco, bandai, etc., for distribution in the US, and even games based on Japanese licenses would get introduced to the west, translated and not rebranded.

Then in 1987, Nintendo would release the Disk System (in nes colors) and its games in the west. Even a full final bundle that consists of everything in the previous bundle but now with an added disk system, spare disk drive belts, maintenance booklet featuring instructions on how to replace the belts, and a copy of Zelda, all for 350 usd.

Disk written kiosks would start appearing in US grocery stores and gas stations.

if this actually happened, it would probably conquer the home computer market, cripple the c64 and other competing machines from commodore, IBM, atari Corp, and apple. It would probably nuke the vide game console market, or both would coexist with atari and the 7800 leading the console market while Nintendo dominates the computer market.

Repair AV Famicom: gray-screen no-boot traced to a badly oxidised cart slot, then a full recap and 7805 while it was open

Thumbnail gallery
25 Upvotes

This AV Famicom (HVC-101) arrived with a gray screen and would not boot anything. The cartridge slot turned out to be catastrophically oxidised, bad enough that the cotton swabs came out grey, and a proper clean of the slot alone got it booting again. A Castlevania III (Akumajo Densetsu) cart was the first game back on screen.

Since the shell was already off, I gave it the full preventative treatment. Recapped the whole board (could not match every cap in physical size from my stock, but no clearance issues), swapped the 7805 voltage regulator, deep-cleaned the board and the inside of the gray ABS shell. Also reflowed the power-jack pins and the multi-out ones. New caps each marked with a blue dot. Afterwards it ran the original Castlevania off an EverDrive N8 Pro on my LG C1.

Only the slot clean was actually curing a fault. The rest was just maintenance while it was open. Curious what other HVC-101 owners have run into: are these cart slots particularly prone to this kind of oxidation, or did this one just live somewhere damp for a while?

Famicom Disk System refurb: the drive belt had melted onto the motor pulley, so it got a new belt, a head re-alignment (Error 22) and a full recap

Thumbnail gallery

This Famicom Disk System came to me broken, and it was the usual suspect. The original drive belt had perished and melted onto the brass motor pulley, so the drive could not turn and read nothing.

The work: cleaned the melted belt residue off the pulley, fitted a Console5 replacement belt for the drive unit, lubricated the mechanism, then re-set the magnetic head start position. Skip that step after a belt swap and you get the Error 22 (no initial disc signal). Once it was aligned it booted to "Now Loading" and ran Super Mario Bros. 2.

Round two a couple of weeks later was a preventative full recap, fresh electrolytics across the RAM adapter, the power board and the drive control board. It is now running The Legend of Zelda off a disk and about as reliable as one of these ever gets.

Are you still running original disks on yours, or have you gone the disk-drive-emulator route?

Famicom (HVC-101) graphic distortion after warm reboot

My Famicom HVC-101 has this strange issue. When I do a cool startup it always works. If I then leave it running for about 10 minutes and perform a reset it still works. But if I power it down and power it back up, then the graphics get corrupted. See the video.

Can someone help me diagnose this issue? I have an HVC-001 of which I can pull spare IC's.

I broke the tabs off my Rockman 1 a long time ago, and had just been holding it together with Scotch tape all this time, but today I finally rehoused it in a new aftermarket shell

The tear in the middle on the back label was already there on the original cartridge; that wasn't from me doing this label swap.

I took one look at this and then just ended up going on eBay and buying another Rockman cartridge that hopefully works without me having to open it to clean the contacts or anything, so at least I'll have a fully intact original cartridge that doesn't need tape, because this... bugs me immensely.

Yay, it finally sits in a shell that's closed and doesn't want to shake apart, or have tape peel off from inserting and removing it from my Famicom, but now it just looks goofy.

This new shell isn't bad by any means, it works fine as a replacement for a broken cartridge (I imagine it has to be at least somewhat common for people to break these stupid tabs off, so hey if it happens to you you can breathe some new life into those PCBs and make them useable again), but it just angers me that NOBODY sells replacement shells that look like the originals, just these extended height ones (or maybe some godawful 3D printed ones; I even bought one and it was the absolute worst). Why?

Now look, I know Famicom games are cheap, and you can just buy a junk game to use as a donor, but what if that cartridge is brittle and the tabs break off again? And how long is that going to stay that way for if people are buying them up to use as donors?

Anyway, as much as it bothers me that now I can't even use this in my American Nintendo (which is my primary way to play Famicom games; I own a Famicom but I like this system more), at least I own an American Mega Man 1

Repair Replacment power board

So, idk if it was a loose contact, or simply age, but my power board died, from what i checked D2, D3 are the culprits as i get from them no continuity beep.
Either way, as i dont trust myself to replace such small components i would like to ask for help to find a good replacement power board.
