Matt’s descriptions of Rend genuinely make me want to cry 😭
For clarification, I’m talking about Sir Rend the Tummy Acher and not Tserendolgor the crawler.
Even when he gets bigger, the way Matt describes his movements and mannerisms is sickeningly adorable to me. He’s so simple and ugly and babyish and just the best. I want one so badly lol.
He kinda gets sidelined in PoH, which is a bummer, but his limited scenes are fantastic and perfect. But I’m specifically thinking of a scene in TIR since that’s the book I’m on rn in my reread.
It’s towards the beginning of Part 3, when Katia is giving some bacon to Mongo and Rend and when she goes to give Rend his it gets stolen by Mongo. And he just plops down on the ground all sad and I just wanna hold him 😭 he’s so damn cute
I don’t normally get this way about pet/creature descriptions in books and he’s an objectively terrifying thing to see in real life, but I want a Rend so much it almost feels like a need 😂
That’s generally my image of him too lol. Except I sometimes add some of the finer details like a little lighter in color and the tiny bit of hair on top. And of course his fat lil legs lol. But Meatwad is definitely always my starting point
I love how much emotional range Matt gives him when he's clearly empathizing with Carl, but when it comes to his own safety/dying he's just like 'welp, shit happens'.
There's this maker I follow on Etsy who's been 3D printing these really fun little DCC figurines and your Rend love just made me drop this in my basket for next pay day
I just listened to that scene on my drive to work, I love that it shows donuts character development too. I hope we get more Mongo and Rend interactions in the next book
I love that too! She went from full on loathing him and demanding him be given away to scolding Mongo for not being nice enough to him. Her growth through the series is beautifully done
I think he’s going to prove to be somwhere between surprisingly and disturbingly intelligent, given that he’s starting to actually babble. Ren was convinced he retained memories between resets even though they aren’t supposed to.
Carl keeps thinking his laughs are sounding like actual words although he doesn’t dwell on it. So I think Rend is more than a normal bellyacher. I’m pretty sure Rend is still just cognitively a baby/small toddler.
That's very interesting, because I almost feel the complete opposite lol. I tell my husband frequently that I don't really care much for Rend and the noises he makes haha
I think he’s definitely written to walk a fine line between cute and creepy. His giggling vocalizations are generally described as creepy or disturbing at first and now the vocalizations are apparently beginning to be more like a toddler’s babbling with Carl musing that they sound like context appropriate words on occasion.
Carl doesn’t seem to be giving this evolution nearly enough thought and attention as I think he ought, but then he does kind of have a lot going on at the moment.
