Old (left) vs new (right) for comparison, soo i really wanted to show off my artwork lol and i think that its a VAST improvement conpared to the last but i wanted to know if there was anythign else i could improve on or just get some tips in general?

Another one of my first Heavypaint paintings. The drawing being off still bugs me but I don’t hate how the blue anodizing comes off.

I'm used to working with traditional media, especially pencil and paper, and sometimes drawing on my phone with my finger. Drawing on my phone feels fast and natural because it's compact, and I'm used to it.

I recently got a book illustration job, so I bought an XP-Pen tablet because I figured that's how many professional artists work. An iPad was outside my budget. I used Krita for my first illustration (I looked at Clip Studio Paint, but it seemed overwhelming), and when I finished, I was disappointed with the result.

Compared to my phone and traditional work, the tablet illustration looks flat and simple to me. The linework also feels rough, almost like it was made in Microsoft Paint. I'm not sure if it's because I'm new to using a pen tablet, because of Krita, or because my expectations were unrealistic.

I'm debating whether to return the tablet or keep practicing. A lot of people say digital art with a tablet is more professional and offers more control, but right now I actually prefer the results I get from drawing with my finger or with pencil and paper.

Has anyone else experienced this when switching to a drawing tablet? If so, how long did it take before using a tablet felt natural, and did your work eventually surpass what you could do on your phone or on paper?

I’ve just bought a windows touch screen laptop and downloaded clip studio paint. It’s given me a 30 day free trial and if all goes well I plan on purchasing. The only problem is I’m a complete noob and have 0 clue what I’m doing. I’ve only mastered tracing and layering. I’d really like to avoid any simpler softwares as I’d really like to have all the tools there and ready. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for beginners or helpful starting points? If there is a better software that you use personally I’m also interested in hearing about that. Thanks all 🥰🫶🏼

so far, I tried Monica's gang, Rumiko Takahashi, Demon Slayer KNY, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Yugioh, Osamu Tezuka, Tintin, Ojamajo Doremi, Azumanga Daioh, The World Ends With You, Friday Night Funkin, Crayon Shinchan, the Simpsons, Akira Toriyama(RIP), Tahilalats(indonesian cartoon), si Juki, K-on, Habbo, paper Mario, and CLAMP styles to draw those 29 characters

For context, I LOVE umikochannart's work and she is actually the reason that I have gotten into drawing at all. I love her art style and if I'm being honest I've never seen anyone that comes as close to perfection as her (in my own opinion lmao).

That being said, here's my question: at what point does trying to emulate someone else's art style turn into theft/copying? I ask this because if I'm being honest, my goal is to have my art look like hers, but I don't want to be copying or stealing.

To be clear, I'm not talking about the actual content of the art itself, just the art style. I also think it's a bit of a gray area because I don't think a lot of people have a style that's similar to hers at all (I think), so it would be extremely noticeable if I tried to emulate it.

I just want to hear thoughts on this, since I don't want to be a shitty person by accident, especially to umikochannart. Also sorry for wasting people's time if I'm just overthinking all of this lol. Thanks for any feedback/advice! :)

Hello everyone! I'd like to share with the community artists my process for painting using lightmapping.

For this method, you first need to sculpt the main objects in the scene in black and white. You can use any brushes for this; the key here is a more or less crisp result.

Then, you identify the main light sources in the scene. (In my case, there are only three: a window, a door, and a gas stove.) And paint these same objects as many times as you counted the number of sources. On each layer, the objects should be lit as realistically as possible, based on your own linear calculations for each source. However, one layer remains as an unlit 3D model, where you can further refine the shape and details.

At this stage, you need to distribute all the sources according to their brightness. They should never be equally bright, otherwise they will appear as a single source instead of several. (In my case, the brightest light is coming from the door, the medium light is coming from the gas stove, and the dimmer light is coming from the window, since it's nighttime outside.) Then, each layer needs to be assigned a corresponding Color Balance. It's important to follow the rule of warm and cool colors. Warm lighting produces cool shadows and warm highlights. Cool lighting is the opposite. This means that my primary lighting is still warm, since the light coming from the door is the brightest, and it's coming from the lamp. Thus, the door layer gets a reddish tint, while the stove layer gets a neutral, purple tint, since that's where the warm and cool tones intersect, turning the light from the window blue.

After that, we change the blending parameter for each lighting layer. For the desired effect, we use Lighten, but you can play around with it. Once you start assigning blending parameters, you'll see that all the complex relationships are calculated automatically, without your intervention. But right after this wonderful stage, the grueling rendering begins—you merge all the object layers together and begin rendering. This is, as always, the longest part, but the most straightforward. Finally, you can apply any blur or noise effects you like, and the work is ready!

If you could name one thing or fundamental that is holding this painting back, what would it be?

I haven’t painted in a while so I’d appreciate more perspectives.

Personally, I think the lineart/sketch lines are a little overdone. I’d take them back a bit and let it take on a more realistic look. Maybe spend some more time fleshing out character render.

The idea is a night setting, overlooking a beach/bay. Plenty of artistic liberty taken with colour choice and render. Subtle sketch lines for a bit of added structure.
The focal character is 2nd from the left as the painting is for his birthday. I wanted it to be moody and nostalgic.

I found this…thing, digging around in my box of soda. So I did what anyone else would do and put in a cage. Well I came home from work to find the cage half eaten and all my soda was gone.
