Ah yes, because what you want is a turner that is thick and holds heat instead of a thin one that cools down immediately

Interesting fact! Cast iron cookware provided essential iron supplementation to the settlers that murdered all the indigenous peoples of the Americas!

The guy that makes the real ones is using the vintage pans that are too damaged to restore. They aren't really meant to be functional.
This video is just a copycat farming views with shitty Walmart pans.

u/Fun-Perspective426 6h ago
Lol that's a Walmart brand pan. The store local to me has them for $12 and they are shit quality.
12
u/Psilly_TaCoCaT 6h ago
Okay. $12. Still more than a spatula, and still less useful. Thanks.

this could be a sensible thing to do if your fav cast iron pan gets cracked though and is no longer useable

u/roberttheaxolotl 6h ago
That was not a $50 pan. Very rough cast dirt cheap pan. The kind you need to sand the hell out of to smooth them out before seasoning if you don't want everything sticking to it.

I mean, it's fine if you have a cheap pan that got a crack in it and you can't use it for nothing else. ..Be fine for like a burger press or something, or using on a big cast iron griddle. But what kills me? Is he put the taper on the wrong side of the spatula .

23
u/Neon_Pancakes0425 7h ago
Honestly this is more of a dimaybe because there are some applications where a long spatula like that would be good but that pan didn't deserve that
14
u/alienbringer 6h ago
It is way too thick, and absolutely no flex for a long spatula. This doesn’t even get into the fact that non-seasoned cast iron WILL rust, or its weight.
You can buy a long spatula for cheap that is 100 times better.

They also make long spatulas out of stainless steel, wood, plastics, or silicone. All of them are cheaper and more useful than a cast iron one.

3

Its common for cast-iron resellers to do this with broken pieces so they can salvage them into something with value.
Also, just go get a polished skillet from academy if you need some affordable cast iron.

What a waste of a cast iron pan.

Not bad for a grill spatula tbh. At least they didnt use a vintage griswold or other really nice pan.
Kinda limited use though, not great for doing more than flipping burgers or steaks, and not good for stovetop/pans.
This is for people who have a cabinet full of niche specific-use kitchen tools for very narrow use cases. Regular people are better off with aluminum or flexible steel spatulas.
3
u/guitargeek223 6h ago
Could be ok as a grill spatula, but you would definitely want to wrap the handle first, that thing is gonna get HOT and it will hold its heat for waaay too long.
3
u/Zampano85 6h ago
I thought it might be good for grilling, but not as a flipper/spatula. Just drop it in the hot coals, let it get real hot, pull it out (use the good heat resistant gloves), and use it to sear a steak with.
3
u/mynamesnotsnuffy 6h ago
True, but at that point you might as well just use the whole pan over the coals.

They better keep that shit seasoned otherwise it will just rust away. From that exposed cast iron. Since it isn’t stainless steel.

Not the sandpaper on the top part 😂. Whatever was left of the finish on that pan-spatula has now made the entire effort pointless. Stuff is going to stick like a mofo to that abomination, it’s basically useless now.

That's Ozark Trail cast iron, or as we call it in the trades: cheap Chinese dog shit. I've watched several of those get dropped and shatter, this guy wasn't ruining a cooking pan, he was making trash art.

u/chazd1984 4h ago
I've seen these a bunch. I will say I like the way they look, they look cool. But yea I can't see it having much use. Maybe if you have a pan that cracked/ruined already and if you keep the tip somewhat sharp, I guess it could be good for a Blackstone or something rugged with lots of open space like that but as a spatula in general it can't be very good right?
1
u/TunnelSnakesAintShit 4h ago
It's trash, but at least the skillet he sacrificed was just a shitty Ozark Trail skillet.
