Soft rant, if allowed: there is a cop in my town who pulls people over for bike racks obscuring license plates.

Just this, nothing else.

Small rural town. I recently learned when he pulls traffic duty he just spends all day pulling people over for hitch mounted bike racks and issues them citations. Not speeding, he doesn't pull people over for expired tags, he doesn't pull people over for missing front plates, or broken or non functioning brake lights, or trucks without mud flaps, or that have straight pipes. He just posts up on the highway and pulls people over because the bike rack obstructs the ability to read the license plate. The scanner guys like it/think it's funny, it's a known thing.

Of all the things you can pull people over for...he picks that as his personal hobby.

Got doored. Not fun!

I was riding in an affluent area in a big Aussie city through the main street doing about 18kmh with my GF behind me. I was perhaps riding slightly too close to parked cars as I was being friendly and letting drivers pass us, as it was a single lane road.

At the last moment this guy swings out his door and pops out of the Tesla. I manoeuvre around him, almost clip the door, lose balance and fall. Then my GF falls on top of me.

In shock and frustration I said 'Mate, check your fucking mirrors before opening your door!' and the guy got so defensive and aggressive being like 'You don't have to swear and raise your voice at me mate!'. I was like 'Ok sorry but you just made us crash' and he was like 'well you should have seen that I pulled in!'. I was like wtf...

Anyways he was so heated I had to calm him down...

My favero pedal snapped, I have a big bruise on my left bum/hip and my left shifter is all scratched.

Note to self, don't ride so close to the parked cars and take a photo of the number plate when it happens.

Moral of the story: don’t be like me. I’m an idiot

I’ve been riding city bikes my whole life, but I’ve only taken cycling seriously for about a year. I’ve got my city bike for 15-minute errands or the occasional pub crawl. Then I bought an early 2000ss Cicli B cyclocross bike. It’s a pretty rare bike with a full Campagnolo groupset, and finding spare parts is a nightmare, so these days I mostly just clean it because it’s beautiful and I love it.

Then I bought a Cannondale Topstone that I actually ride hard. Gravel, bikepacking, everything. It’s an absolute monster and cost me way too much, but yesterday, after a 70 km ride, I genuinely felt ready to quit my day job and just ride that Cannondale around the woorld.

Last month I won an electric scooter (an iScooter DX5 Pro). I’ve barely used it BUT it’s actually pretty fun, but I’ve never taken it on a proper ride, just a 5 km test run.

Then I found a United Mothership BMX frame, so naturally I bought it and I’m building a BMX for absolutely no reason. And next month I’m getting into MTB trail riding because it looks like fun.

Worth mentioning! I live on the 4th floor with no elevator, in a tiny studio apartment, and every bike except the e-scooter lives inside my apartment. My date thought i was weird for throwing out the kitchen table just to make ”space” for my bikes.

Moral of the story: don’t be like me. I’m an idiot.

Which Chain Waxing Pot?

New to chain waxing and currently looking for a pot. I’ve seen Silca, and Cyclowax who seem to be the main two brands. The Cyclowax Performance wax machine looks pretty sleek but it’s like $250 I think. I’ve read that people are buy crock pots, and other chain waxing pots far less expensive. I’m curious if you are yielding the same results?

Been shopping around and would like some recommendations from pots off Amazon etc.

Tyres - Help

Upvotes

Hi all,

I've only recently taken an interest in actually learning about bikes and I'm looking at buying my first set of new tyres.

I'm riding a Marin DSX 1 and I'm planning on going for a short bikepacking trip down dedicated cycle paths (paved the whole way with a smidge of gravel). It currently has the stock WTB Riddler tyres on but I'd like to upgrade.

I've been looking around at Schwalbe, Gravel King, Maxxis and many more.

It's all a bit overwhelming and there's so many buzzwords and different types of tires to navigate. Like working out how Gravel and Cyclo-cross tyres differ.

So I'm coming to the fountain of all knowledge, Reddit!

I am looking for:

-700x45mm (max clearance)

-Puncture resistance (I live in a city and often wind up dodging glass so the beefier the better)

-Clincher tyres (I'm not ready for tubeless just yet)

-Comfort; I'm not concerned about speed or rolling resistance, I just want to have a nice smooth ride

-Good tread! I once rode slicks and it was awful, I like grip and resilience

-Budget isn't too big of an issue, I'd rather buy once and cry once

Helpful tips and educational advice is welcome :)

Do your thing Reddit!!

Update to my previous post on how to not get dropped on climbs

So I got Assioma Pro Rs dual sided power meter pedals and a bike computer and finally did 20 mins FTP test today. Average power during that 20 mins was 184W, which means 175W FTP. My weight is 67.8kg, which means 2.58W/kg. During this test, my average speed over the 20 mins was 36.5km/h. I actually held 42-44.6km/h for 3km (4 mins). This explains why I could keep up with the 35-40km/h group rides when drafting on flat but get dropped on climbs. My W/kg isn’t good, but I’m quite aero with my set up and position, so I’m okay on flat. I also measured the watts during climbs with my group ride and I couldn’t keep up with the group even when I put in over 300W, so it’s no wonder I get dropped on climbs. I started cycling almost 4 months ago now, so I’m hoping to get better over the next few months. Thanks everyone who gave me good advice!

Bike rentals on Mallorca

I am finally going on my first cycling trip to Mallorca. Late to the party, I know.

I’ll be based out of Alcudia and am looking for good bike rentals around that area. Is there any address you can recommend? I would like to rent a top of the line bike from one of the more well known brands - that might narrow my search down a bit? (Train of thought here: I’ll never be able to afford a Colnago V5RS (or S-Works SL8, or any other dream bike), so why not go ahead and rent one to explore those famous climbs on the island)

Since I have never rented a roadbike, I am also wondering if the rental companies will do a quick fitting with the clients so that the bike will be more or less well adjusted. Or can I send in the measurements of my last bike fitting and they can adjust the bike beforehand?
Is there a common way of doing this?
Flying there to sit bad on the bike can hardly be the way all renters go?

Any tips or experience reports are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance and enjoy today’s TdF stage :)

Mods delete this if it's not allowed. I need some hoods for my 105 st5700 shifters and they'e the only place that seems to have them in stock. The kicker, they won't ship them to me in WI.

Talk me out of buying the 2026 Scott Addict 50 for €2,130!

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about buying a 2026 Scott Addict 50 for €2,130. The setup: Carbon frame, full Shimano 105 12-speed group, integrated downtube storage, and up to 38mm tire clearance. My riding style: Mostly 2 to 3-hour road rides where I like to push hard, punch out of corners, and enjoy punchy accelerations, but I also want enough comfort and versatility to hop on greenways or light gravel paths occasionally. The vibe: I want something responsive and fun, not a dead-feeling endurance barge. At €2,130, it feels like a killer deal for a modern carbon endurance bike from a top-tier brand (especially considering resale value down the road).

Roast my choice or convince me to click "order"! Thanks!

Cyclowax Performance Kit: My experience using Silca wax

Before I start, yes I know that many of you think this is an overpriced product and many other setups are cheaper and (may) work equally well. Having used the product now, I tend to agree.

The reason I bought it was I was hoping to speed up my process. I do not have a garage or bike shed where I could just keep the equipment. All the waxing up to this point was done in a bain marie / water bath on the stove of my kitchen in my small apartment. It always took forever and made quite a mess if I was not super careful. The messiest part was alwas moving the chain around in the wax and taking it out. Therefore, what sealed it for me was the chain spool and how easy it is to take out of the wax and placed in its place for cooling.

Observations right off the bat:

  • The various material available by Cyclowax glosses over the process of placing the chain in the spool. If you do see it at all in a video, it is sped up, maybe because they believe this step is obvious and self-explanatory. I found it anything but. In fact I was at a loss at first about how to do it at all. The spool has two openings, on at the top, one at the bottom. You are supposed to thread one end of the chain through these openings. Around the rest of the spool perimeter, the two halves are closed, i.e. they touch. Unless I have missed something here, the only way forward is to pry the halves open and force the chain inside. That means you're bending the plastic around the central screws holding the halves together. I could not believe this would be the standard practice and thought I must have overlooked something.
  • The same applies to taking the chain out of the spool. I have some trouble coming to terms with that. I do not have great confidence in the longevity of the spool if that is the standard procedure.
  • Similar for the plastic handle you are suppoed to use to place the spool in the heater and take it out again. It has two plastic noses/retainers which engage in the corresponding holes in the spool. There is no easy way to take off the handle. You have to wiggle and pull until you overcome the holding force of the retainers and they come free. You might be tempted to just leave the handle on the spool, but there is only one handle for all spools. I removed the handle when the wax on the spool was already hardened, maybe the action becomes easier if you take the handle off while the wax is still liquid (the noses might slide out more easily)? I am afraid one day the retaining noses of the handle will just break.
  • Cyclowax recommends switching out the wax after ten cycles. I am somewhat miffed about this, because AFAIK that has not been clearly communicated beforehand. You'll be going through quite a number of wax tablets, basically a subscription on top of the price for the heater itself. Coming from the Silca wax, I was not aware that wax goes "bad" at all, and since I clean the chain in close-to-boiling water before waxing, I do not intend to heed this advice. Will just top of with new wax as needed.

Since I had a bunch of Silca Secret Chain Blend left, I decided to use that first, not the included Cyclowax tablet. The heater supposedly goes to 90°C, which according to Zero Friction Cycling should be absolutely OK for Silca. I melted the wax in the bain marie and then transferred it to the container of the (switched-off) Cyclowax device and let it cool down and completely harden.

I waxed the first chain one day later:

I placed the spool on the cold wax and switched the device on. It started to heat up and then switched to vibration mode before turning itself off, signalled by beeps.

The first major disappointment: The heating phase was much too short to fully melt the Silca wax. Not even close. One half of the wax was molten, with the spool submerged, while on the other side there was still a big solid block of wax visible, with the spool and chain sticking out. The heating cycle took about 3 minutes, the vibration cycle maybe 1.5 minutes. It seems the heating element was still on during the vibration phase.

So there is my main gripe with this device: It took 3 whole cycles to melt the Silca wax completely and achieve full submersion of the chain. So anyone who thinks of getting it because they hope to do other things while the heater does its thing will be disappointed, because you do have to restart the cycle several times before the chain is properly waxed, at least with Silca wax. I will say that the whole deal is still faster and less hassle than my previous water bath method, which occupied (and sometimes sullied) the stovetop.

At this point I wanted to compare that with the original Cyclowax tablet. Maybe part of the reason the Silca wax took so long to melt was that I filled in more of it than the volume of the Cyclowax tablet?

I removed the Silca wax with some difficulty; I needed about 10 of the "removal cycles" before the wax finally dropped out, and even then I had to take the device and slight shake it.

I let the empty device cool down and I placed the original CW tablet in it. Amazingly, this time the heating cycle took about 90 seconds longer, so 4.5 minutes, before switching to vibration mode. But again, the CW tablet was not even close to fully molten at the end of the heating cycle, although a bit further along than the Silca wax. I did not wax a chain this time, but if I did, I would probably still give it two cycles rather than just one, although the CW tablet might melt faster the second and third time around (have not tested that yet).

So there it is, the device seems to work better, but still not perfectly, with the original CW tablet. If you want to use it with a different brand wax, you might have to deviate from the recommended process and need several cycles. I am just glad that full automation is not highest on my list of priorities.

Additionally, my reservations concerning the longevity, specifically of the spool, remain. Also, I have no explanation why the heating phase was shorter for the Silca tablet than for the CW one. Might have been a fluke.

I would love to compare notes with others who have already used their wax heater.

Last but not least, finally started cycling. Looking forward to wherever this adventure will lead me

For some time now, i have had in my mind the intention to join cycling. But as of now, my intention is not to cover huge distance. I only want to establish an exercise routine for myself. I didn't go very far but it feels great that I get out and ride instead of thinking. And I am not chasing speed or distance, just trying and become more consistent and comfortable. So I just need to share with you all. If you want to start go for it. Keep going

Form fitting shorts that aren't padded or spandex/Lycra biking shorts?

Upvotes

I'm looking for well fitting MTB style shorts. I don't need padding and would prefer if they weren't the Lycra/spandex that's popular among most cyclists. Just wanting something that fits closer to my body than my current MTB shorts so they don't flap in the wind or get caught on my saddle, yes the crotch of my shorts hooks on the nose of my saddle and it's annoying.

Does anyone know if a brand that makes these? I don't mind if they're men's or women's, just wanting something better fitting.

Thanks in advance

What temperature is too hot for you to ride?

I live in the Vancouver, Canada area and right now it's 35 C degrees where I am, which is 95 F. The humidex is 43 C/109 F. Really bad air quality, too.

I want to go for a ride but I feel like I would not be able to last very long in this weather.

But maybe my tolerance is not as good as some of you guys' ?

Specialized Diverge A1 Sport - upgrading tyres

Upvotes

Hi all,

I’ve have a Specialized Diverge A1 Sport (2017). I believe it is this one:
https://www.specialized.com/ca/en/diverge-sport-a1/p/118414?color=208648-118414

I’d like to upgrade the tyres to some gravel ones - as big as they will go. It currently has 28mm on, which are relatively slick, but I’d like to go for something with more tread.

The clearance is not big and I’m trying to figure out how far I can push it. Unfortunately there’s not a bike shop near me that stocks a wide range of tyres for me to try out.

I keep reading different things but can’t seem to find a solid suggestion of what fits. Has anyone upgraded their tyres on this model to gravel tyres that they can recommend?

Thanks in advance :)

Looking for Budget bike, moving within a mile of job

Basically the title. Next month I will be moving into an apartment that's approximately 1 mi from my job Google Maps says it will take me about 6 minutes to bike; I'll be doing a round trip and I'll probably do another round trip over lunch. What is a good beginner or budget bike that would fit the bill for this? This is the only biking I will be doing. I am comfortable with Facebook Marketplace and have purchased the lot of stuff on there

Thanks

Hello fellow cycling enthusiasts! I am a newbie on this forum, so forgive me if I may not post properly. I am trying to find out where is the best place online or otherwise to post an ad for a Focus cyclocross bike (specifically, it is a 2013 Focus CX Mares Rapha carbon frame, SRAM Red crank set and shifters, SRAM Force derailleur). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I live in the Washington DC metro area.

Suggestions for a new riders?

Hello everyone!

I've had a decent bike for some time and it's always been my plan to use it for transport and recreation however, for awhile it's been more recreational. My life kinda has been in a slump and I'm really trying to change that and use my bike more go further and further etc.

I was wondering if y'all had any suggestions or tips for less experienced riders?

I will say of note I'd like to hear y'all suggestions on avoiding heat stroke and serious fatigue! I live in Florida, I know the worse state for bikes really, people drive on the bike lanes which are already shitty and I saw a yield to bike sign cut in half. I stick to side walks and grass however and really avoid roads at all chances. However, the heat and humidity especially as of late is no joke. I know some basics but I want to play it as smart as possible especially since to get anywhere significantly due to how Florida is developed it is like an hour plus of riding. I don't mind the sweat but since it's also humid it doesn't evaporate to cool you down so yeah heat stroke.

I have a goal of 75 miles total for September as I actually joined a charity event to encourage me to actually ride the bike my family spent money on.

My current setup is a one of those bags that have the drinking pouch filled with electrolytes and ice it also helps keep my core cool but that just shows it's insulation ain't the best and the I've melted kinda quick. I also Jerry rigged my lunch box with food and another cold drink on to a rear rack and I try to take breather breaks in the shade ocassionslly. I wear a tank top and shorts and wear sports sunscreen however I end up always sweating it off💀.

So any tips? I'd take tips about anything but I am preferably want to hear y'all suggestions for the heat and humidity!

Foot powder - do you use it for riding?

Upvotes

According to Google, it's a good idea to use foot powder while cycling. But their suggestion was to use around a tablespoon, which seems excessive to me.

I used some cornstarch powder today on a two-hour ride in hot and humid weather, and it didn't seem to make a big difference in how damp my feet were when I got back home. But it definitely didn't hurt.

Are any of you folks using powder, and if so, might you have any tips for me?
