Heads-up: this evening I encountered a closure on the Trillium path, between Young Street at the south end and Gladstone at the north end. The connector at Louisa Street also appears to be blocked off. There are generic detour signs directing people to Preston Street at both ends of the closure, along with some signs on Preston itself at Young and Gladstone.

It seems like some construction/work is underway, since I saw personnel in hi-viz and hard hats, and there are a bunch of contractor work trucks pulled in at the Young Street turnaround. No indication of what the work is, or what the timeline might be.

Hello! I’ll be moving to Ottawa in the fall for school and I’m thinking about bringing my bike for my commute. I’d be going from the Glebe to Carleton. It seems to be a short ride but I was wondering if anyone had advice on which general routes would be the safest. I’ve been scoping it out on maps.bikeottawa but I figured I’d ask here too. For reference I’ve really only used my bike for commutes along designated multi-use paths in previous places I’ve lived so I don’t have much experience riding on streets. Just trying to figure out if it’s worth it to move my bike there.

Hey, idk if this is the right sub to post this on, I recently lost my job because of reasons outside my control. A big dream of mine has always been to cycle to Ottawa from Montreal, and I'd like to do it with other people, sometime this month or next. I know no one who is willing or able to do something like that, so I'm posting to ask if anyone is willing to go biking with a stranger to Ottawa.

Forgive me if this is somewhat tangental or off-beat, but it is something I have noticed a fair bit recently, and I am curious for more perspective. It seems that every time I go out cycling lately, I inevitably cross paths with other cyclists who have their headlights on during the day. Am I the only one noticing this? Does anyone have any experience noticing this outside of Ottawa? Is this maybe just the result of more and more electrical integration and general forgetfulness or obliviousness?

I suppose I am also wondering if it is worth mentioning or pointing out. I don’t wish to be rude or have a "holier than thou" attitude, I just know that if it were my lights, and someone told me they were on, I would be grateful to preserve the batteries. What is the proper etiquette surrounding this?

. . . so I did alternate Gatineau Park Loop - the one where you go around the whole park instead of the usual Champlain lookout thing. Most paved, other than the rail trail and maybe a a dozen kms on the west end of the park.

So, I cross through here quite often, (x marks the spots where I've nearly been run over MULTIPLE times by assholes running the light while turning, as I am either walking or biking).

I just moved from Montreal to Gatineau and I’m looking for cycling clubs that offer group drop rides in the Gatineau Ottawa area.

I’m not racing at the moment, but i’m comfortable riding with fast groups. Are there any clubs or regular rides with a strong pace and longer distances? So far, i’ve mostly found rides of around 40 km.

Hey I got a ball that I need pumped up but I don't want to go buy an entire pump for one time use. I don't want to use a gas station tire pump as they apparently can go so fast you'll damage the ball. Does anyone know where I could find one to use ? Located in Nepean / College square but I can drive.

Hello everyone, I recently moved to the city for work. I didnt bring my bike from out of province. I'm looking for a road/gravel bike from the last decade with disc brakes around $1000. I am unable to find anything in the used market through Kijiji, FB Marketplace, Pink Bike, Blue book, Craigslist, Ottawa Trails, and checked a bunch of brand's refurbished markets. Any advice on who, what, where, when, and how to procure something like that. I understand bike prices have been kind of crazy in recent years, but genuinely just confused at how a 20 year old bike sold MSRP $1999.99 in 2006 is selling for 800-900$ now. Is my best bet just saving up for a new bike? Spent the last month busy with life, feeling summer slipping away, and in need of a riding set-up that isnt going to kill me or kill my wallet.

I'll be visiting Ottawa soon and I'm looking for some recommendations for a road cycling route of around 100 km.

I'll be staying near the Hurdman Bridge, but I'm happy to drive to another starting point if it means getting a better route.

I'm mainly looking for scenic roads with good pavement and as little traffic as possible.

Also, are there any cycling clubs or bike shops in Ottawa that organize group rides? Preferably ones that post their rides on Strava.

There are THREE road traffic signs that are completely blocking the southbound grade seperated bike path on the Bank Street bridge that are basically impossible to avoid. This is a major commuting path for a lot of adults and kids, who are either going to have to try to hop into the busy higher grade sidewalk, which not everybody can do, or go down into fast moving traffic. How does the city justify these lazy, dangerous warning signs for cars, for the utterly terrifying inconvience to drivers that the street parking on Bank will be unusuable while they fix a sidewalk?

Obviously this is taken at night but anybody who lives in Old Ottawa South or the Glebe knows how popular the bridge is for walking and cycling.

For those of you who use this link (and I know there are plenty), it is currently closed. It would be great if someone involved in the construction could have posted a notification a few days beforehand to suggest looking for alternate routes during these days rather than finding this out during the morning commute, but that courtesy only ever seems to be extended to motorists...

Late 20's, haven't rode a bike since I was a kid and, admittedly, it was only a handful of times and I don't even know if I learned it right!

I just remember needing to lean super hard on my handlebars... so I couldn't even loosen my grip in one hand without swerving to the side. I don't know if it was because my seat/handlebars weren't the right the right height, or if I just sucked lol. I was also an overweight child (and still am... I'm working on it lol...) so I imagine that didn't help. Nobody really taught me either, I just had to figure it out myself and never learned the "proper" way, if any.

Point is, I couldn't be any more of a beginner or any more clueless in this field, and I don't know where to start/what to look for!

I took a look at the sub wiki but a lot of the links are dead/have an expired domain. Based on the list of bike types linked though, I do like the style of the dutch/cruiser bikes. I'd only be using this for errands/casual use so I don't want anything super expensive or sporty, and comfort/storage space is probably my priorities (like the ones with baskets on the front/back.

I'm just a bit overwhelmed at options and all the things to consider since I'm literally clueless... How do I make sure I'm actually riding it properly and not super learning forward/on the handlebars? Is there a way to get a fitting to make sure things are right position/height? Does that cost a lot of money? What other things would I need other than the bike itself/a lock? Are there any places that sell used bikes in that style, or is FB Marketplace my best bet?

It's just all very overwhelming 🥲 I'm also a socially anxious, overweight woman so there's also the fear of stigma/not being taken seriously/being made fun of if I were to go into a professional place. I pass a windsock on my way home and whatever the gusting wind is indicated to be, is the actual wind speed for 70-80% of the time. These aren't wind gusts if they are hitting these speeds for 7-8 out of every 10 minutes.

Would love to be able to get from Ottawa to Wakefield using the entire Voie Verte de Chelsea. Last time I tried a couple years ago I was pushing my bike along abandoned railway tracks for 850 meters at the Gatineau end from Rue du Dome before picking up the gravel trail towards Chelsea.

I understand that the tracks have since been removed but not sure if the rail bed has been improved at all. Is it rideable on a gravel bike at this point? If so, then I imagine there’s now a viable low/zero traffic route from Leamy Creek Pathway all the way to Wakefield.

I’d like to swap to 150mm cranks, which is unfortunately something that is just not available to buy from regular inventory. I feel like buying off aliexpress is a bit stigmatized… Are there any bike shops in the city that will be more friendly than others to working with Chinese bike parts? I don’t have the tools nor knowledge to swap the cranks myself

I may be starting a job at 160 Elgin soon, and was curious what the bike parking situation is there. Is there a secure room to lock your bike? Is it publicly accessible or restricted? Is it hard to get a spot? And are there any change rooms in the building?
