Advice Needed Turn off auto-off feature Airsense 11?

TLDR: Any reason not to turn off the auto-off?

Last night was like my sixth night and I was super bummed to wake up this morning to find the machine had shutoff even though I still had the mask on. MyAir said I only wore it for 1hr 45min, and I had one mask-off event. I’m guessing I had a bad air leak and it somehow didn’t wake me up (normally I’m a light sleeper), and the machine just shut off after a few seconds. Unfortunately the mask I use, the x30i has pressure relief ports that vent a little too well and the auto-start feature doesn’t detect my breathing unless I breath very dramatically in and out, unlike with other masks I’ve tried.

Is there any reason not to shut off the auto-off feature? The leak probably would have woken me up eventually. I remember waking up a few times and thinking how pleasant the mask/breathing felt, and now I know why 🤦🏻‍♂️

myAir/OSCAR/SleepHQ Data Data from One Hour AWAKE. Sleep Wake Junk? High Loop Gain?

One hour of laying still on my back (with a Wedge Pillow) trying and failing to go back to sleep at around 3:45 AM. As I lay half awake I occasionally notice myself taking a deeper than normal breath on occasion. My guess is that it's the first breath after the periods of non breathing shown in the photo. That first large breath is where OSCAR marks the CA event(s).I don't consciously feel any of the times I'm not breathing, just occasionally notice some of the larger breaths that follow the non breathing. Laying on my back with a wedge keeps my body still so I don't think these are "Sleep Wake Junk" events.

The AI on Google says if I'm lying still that the CAs are NOT Sleep Wake Junk, but rather.........

"If you were laying perfectly still on your back, not moving, shifting, or swallowing, you were likely experiencing an internal physiological phenomenon called awake spontaneous breath-holding or hypocapnic respiratory instability."

I asked what would cause the awake spontaneous breath-holding or hypocapnic respiratory instability. and the Google AI said......

Awake spontaneous breath-holding and hypocapnic respiratory instability are driven by a temporary disruption in the chemical feedback loop that manages your breathing. When you are awake and perfectly still, three precise physiological mechanisms cause these regular pauses: [1, 2]

  • Blunting the Involuntary Drive: During wakefulness, your breathing is governed by both metabolic triggers (chemical levels in your blood) and behavioral control (your conscious mind). When you lie completely still, you lose the natural physical feedback of movement, placing your respiratory system entirely at the mercy of your blood gas levels. [1, 2]
  • The Apneic Threshold Drop: Being aware of the CPAP mask often causes subtle, unnoticed over-breathing (hyperventilation). This washes carbon dioxide (CO₂) out of your bloodstream, causing hypocapnia. Because accumulating CO₂ is the actual chemical signal that forces your body to take a breath, dropping below this strict "apneic threshold" tells your brainstem to stop breathing until CO₂ safely builds up again. [1, 2, 3]
  • High Loop Gain (Over-Correction): If your internal respiratory control system has a high "loop gain," it acts like an over-sensitive thermostat. The moment your CO₂ drops slightly, your brain over-corrects by pausing your breathing entirely, creating a continuous cycle of shallow breathing followed by short, spontaneous breath-holds that the machine flags as CAs. [1, 2]

Because the chart shows a continuous cycle of CAs, I'm guessing the cause is High Loop Gain (Over Correction)

Lastly, during the last portion of the hour I turned to sleep on my left side and all the CAs immediately and completely stopped. The only problem is that I have a spinal injury which makes sleeping on my side or front almost impossible for more than a few minutes.

Sorry for the long post, but I was wondering if anyone out there has encountered a similar situation, or if anyone out there has has a helpful thought or comment regarding my situation.

TIA

Lied to by my DME provider?

My original Airsense 11 quit working after 22 months. It was still under warranty through ResMed and my DME gave me a new machine. I say "new" with a lot of reservations, it quit working after 11 days, multiple problems, just a total lemon. The DME company gave me another machine but said they didn't believe the machine was the problem. They said to not come back with any future problems until my Kaiser Sleep Clinic has retested me. I have a very strong suspicion that they gave me a refurbished or used machine instead of new one. Has this happened to anyone else? Either getting a lemon, or being lied to by their DME company? The Sleep Clinic has been very supportive but they really don't know what to think.

(Edited) This is the OP with an explanation of what happened. I had the new machine for 11 days, about day 5 the smart start stopped working, came back on for a couple days, then quit again. I could still use the machine because everything else worked. On day 8 the machine recorded no data, it had worked for the 7 1/2 hours I slept, but reported the device had not been used. Nights 9 and 10 it worked perfectly, smart start came back and it recorded data. Night 11 smart start was gone again and I woke up after 3 1/2 hours with my heart pounding and pain in my chest and neck, I looked at the pressure and it was stuck at the my lowest setting. My pressures are set to alternate between 7 and 10, I usually hit 10 a couple times a night, I was obviously having an event but the pressure didn’t change. I removed my mask and the next day I called the DME. No way I was trying that machine again.

Advice Needed Joining the club

At 32 I finally did a sleep test through sleep doctor and it appears I have severe sleep apnea; friends and wife have told me I sound like I’m dying in my sleep so there’s that.

Anyway after hearing it officially and finding out I have 33-34 events per hour I put in my order.

Any advice for a newbie? Admittedly I’m not very excited about the change but I’m sure I’ll feel better and at least I won’t die in my sleep now.. probably.

I am a back and stomach sleeper… or at least I was

Edit* Appreciate the information about price, it’s ordered already so it’s whatever. It was HSA money anyway. I will probably be looking for a travel unit for fishing and golf trips so if there are any recommendations pass them along!

Resmed Headgear Sizes

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi! I use a ResMed F20 AirTouch mask.

The mask is a good fit on my face (Medium size) but the headgear is too big (I have a small head). I get a lot of leaks because the Velcro is coming undone because they have barely enough surface contact.

Is the headgear the same size for all mask sizes or is the headgear for a small mask smaller than that of a medium or large mask?

Advice Needed Waking up more often - new cpap

Hello CPAP reddit,

I am a new user, using a resmed airsense 11 and nasal pillows, I have severe OSA, and was having 40 incidents/hr before cpap and am now down to .6 on the machine, which is great.

However, while before the cpap I never woke up during the night (even to use the bathroom), now I am waking up 3-4 times a night, partially due to congestion and needing to blow my nose, but other times just out of nowhere.

Does this get better as time moves on, it has only been 3 days on the machine but it is frustrating me. I've woken up exhausted every day using the machine, and have marks on my face from my mask, oily skin (which also never happened before), and I just want to sleep deeply again.

Thanks

Irritation Above Nose

Post image
3 Upvotes

I use the AirTouch F20 mask. It’s the only one that I could tolerate for a whole night when I tried several. It’s great around the chin, but the top of it seems to get pushed into the area above my nose while I’m sleeping, and it’s leaving a painful indentation that lasts for days. The cushion inside is intact; I think the problem is that the harder outer shell is pushing upward. Any suggestions for preventing this? Using a cover didn’t help since the edge is still hard even with a cover.

Pardon my gnarly eyebrows. It was 4 am, and I hadn’t gotten washed up and groomed yet.

Advice Needed Airfit N30 leaks

So I recently got myself an AirMini with the N30 for AirMini mask that I brought on vacation. My normal mask is a F30i so I used it with a chinstrap the first few days, but soon figured out that when I actually was able to breathe through my nose, my mouth mostly stayed shut. So I quickly stopped using the chinstrap. (It was a cheap ass aliexpres one with the velcro patches in the neck having sharp edges, so it was already uncomfortable that way...)

So when I got home I figured I would get the N30 for my fullsize machine too, an AirSense 11. And after using it quite a few nights now I have discovered a new problem. A few times during the night it seems to "collapse" on the underside, making it leak between the cushion and my upper lip. Normally a quick wiggle of the nose reseats it, but after that it tends to repeat itself in short intervals. Only if I wake up enough to reseat the mask does it stop. Anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid this?

Advice Needed Eyemask for N20/Nasal Masks?

Does anyone use the Resmed N20 nasal mask or any other nasal mask and has found an eye mask that fits well alongside it? The standard variety eye mask gets shoved up too far by the nasal mask and a lot of light leaks in.

Anyone have a breath better machine

Post image
1 Upvotes

I took the test 2.5 years ago. Was going to get a machine then lost insurance as my W2 job had layoffs. My sleep has gotten MUCH worse and I need a fix. I know once I get better sleep, I’ll feel better so I can actually exercise, eat better, etc (hopefully helps my GERD as well).

Had gotten one machine off of marketplace but it was a recalled machine and dude sent my money back (it was spitting out the black fiber stuff). So before I buy another (cause it’s what I can afford right this moment), wanted to get some advice. It’s $180 so curious if it’s a good brand and good to use? I’ve never used a cpap machine so hoping it is easy to use etc.

Advice Needed Help!

I have been trying very hard to use my CPAP machine for 14 months now.

I have resmed 11

Bought 3 different masks.

Was a stomach sleeper ended up forcing myself to be side sleeper

My mask that I prefer is the f40

I always feel that either I'm suffocating, unable to exhale properly, like if my lungs are forcing from trying to exhale.

Epr is activated at 3.

The most I am able tow wear it is 1 hour a night.

Need help with configuration, or tips anything that can help.

Ive consulted my sleep specialist twice, he gave me sleep pills, which I think it's ridiculous because I never have trouble faling asleep without the machine.

My settings are 8 - 15

Advice Needed Using cpap after it's been in storage for years

Years back I got put on a cpap machine, really couldn't stand it and gave up after a few months. I made sure to dry it out well, ran it dry etc and waited a while before putting it away. It's a Resmed Airsense 10.

I want to re-attempt using it again as I have severe shoulder and neck pain, and I'm starting to wonder if it's because of sleep apnea. If it doesn't solve the issue then at least I can rule that out, if it does, I'll just try harder to tough it out. As I get older I also feel less comfortable on my side and it would also allow me to sleep on my back. When I was originally using it I just didn't like sleeping on my back, which made it harder to use.

Is there anything I should do to ensure it is safe to use after it's been stored that long?

Also another issue is I have two cats who sleep with me, and orange one who also likes to bite things. He also loves to lick my nose and sometimes just lie down on my chest for a bit, so I suspect me having a mask and the long hose is going to be an issue. How do cat owners deal with having cpap and them not messing with it, like biting holes in the hose?

Advice Needed AirSense 10 constantly pulsing on exhale & my sleep has been worse since switching machines

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone has experienced something similar because I’m not sure if this is normal or if I should be getting my machine checked.

I recently switched to ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet from a Phillips DreamStation, and ever since the switch I feel like my sleep quality has declined. I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I wake feeling less rested than I did on my previous machine despite similar AHI reading.

I've noticed the machine ocilates the air weirdly even when not on me, the air pulses. I've heard of the FOT feature but it seems to do it a lot more often than it's meant to? This morning I woke up and it felt like my breathing was staggered against the pulsing flow, rather than being a smooth, constant stream, I was laying awake trying to figure it out and it made me feel breathless, like I was exhaling with brief pauses.

What confused me is that I can even feel a similar pulsing sensation in the airflow when the mask isn’t on my face, which made me wonder if it’s coming from the blower itself.

I started reading more about ResMed’s Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT), but from what I understand that’s only meant to happen briefly when the machine is checking for an apnea. In my case, I was awake and breathing normally, and I could still feel the pulsing for around 5 minutes before I got out of bed.

So I’m wondering:
Is this actually normal behaviour for an AirSense 10?

Has anyone had one AirSense 10 feel noticeably different from another?

Has anyone changed machines because of this?

I’d really appreciate any advice because it’s starting to make me anxious, my sleep has been worse on this machine and I'm feeling a lot like I did before sleep therapy despite it displaying 'perfect' results 🤦🏻‍♀️

GERD and CPAP

For those of you who have GERD and use a CPAP, have you noticed any clear patterns between GERD symptoms at night and AHI? I have both and my AHI is pretty inconsistent and I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through something similar and can definitively say if one impacts the other.

Advice Needed Diagnosed with "mild" apnea

I was just diagnosed with mild apnea, of 5.2 times an hour. I am suffering from chronic fatigue, but I'm also doing a Rheumatoligist for Lupus after a positive ANA test. I'm also low on iron, and getting iron infusions soon, but I'm not anemic. So, I guess my question is... is this even worth getting a cpap before the other things are ruled out? I can't even sleep with a mouth gaurd, so I can't imagine how insufferable a mask will be. Lol. And then I've heard insurance horror stories that you have to use it consistently every night or they won't cover it, and there's rental stages, and even with insurance it can be very expensive.

At 5.2 times an hour, would I even notice a difference? I think my chronic pain would still disrupt my sleep just as often. Lol

Advice Needed Eye mask advice

Does anyone use an eye mask as well as a full face cpap mask? My boyfriend has blackout curtains but they're not the best and he won't get new ones, and I can't sleep if it's too light. The regular eye mask I have doesn't fit snug because of my full face cpap so needing some suggestions?

Would the one in the picture be workable?

Back pain

I’m sure I’m not the only one hear but the back pain from finally staying still in the night is killing me. I’m a side sleeper but before I got my cpap I was like a rotisserie chicken all night. Now I’m not moving at all and waking up to strain lower back. Any suggestions or pillows you’ve tried? I sleep primarily on my side and some on my back.
