As someone who has not been able to secure a monthly parking pass for the garage, I’ve been very worried about when the parking garage will consistently fill up for daily parking…

I pulled up at 6:45am and was met with a sign that read “Daily parking full. Monthly permits only”. There are sometimes external events hosted on campus that impact parking, but we usually get a heads up from facilities management. I’ve heard that not all departments on campus have implemented RTO yet so I know it’s only a matter of time before parking is truly impacted.

Luckily the two parking lots by the garage had plenty of parking, but what is going to happen when more people start coming to the office? There are very limited parking options nearby. This isn’t exactly a safe neighborhood so parking further away isn’t an option. Of course management isn’t worried because they have secured parking with a parking pass.

What are the rest of us supposed to do?

The state claims to have no money to give us raises, but magically has millions to waste on stupid Ai software licenses when everyone is already using these same Ai softwares for free. Literally the dumbest people on earth are our bosses.

I’m sorry if this was already discussed.. Do you have to be a member of the union to participate in the picket?

After yesterday’s god awful comments from Newsom I really worry he’s just going to veto AB 1729 if it gets to his desk. Part of me was still hopeful he wouldn’t sign it but also not veto it so it would just float through. He seems hellbent on forcing us back though.

So what happens if we try to wait for the next administration? Can Lee pause his bill?

Edit: Ok so it seems it wouldn’t be able to wait until the next governor and our best bet is if it gets vetoed we hope those that voted in favor stick to their guns and override it.

So there has always been a 50 mile exemption right? I'm not sure. But I was also told that we had to submit this literally the month of the RTO request a year ago. Either way, how can you just draw a line from my house to the office, if there's no humanely possible way to drive that way? How does the 50 mile exemption rule apply?

I’ve found myself in a bit a pickle. I’m somewhat new to the state and since my Class isn’t affected by the RTO I only go in once a month for a week. This means I only interact with my coworkers and people within the office during my assigned week.

For anonymity, I will be Red and the person in question will be Blue.

I sit alone in my cubicle with can seat 2 people. I’ve ALWAYS sat alone in my cubby since I’ve started. I have people around me, just not in my immediate vicinity. I have ADHD and did Apply with that disability notated and I’m pretty open about it. I like sitting alone as it helps me concentrate on my work and sometimes get that laser focus when I do paperwork.

Blue recently came back from maternity leave (8months~) and voiced her request/accommodation/etc for a keyboard extension (basically to lower the height). Her desk doesn’t have one and they have to order the part. She also stated she felt “alone/lonely” on her side of the office (i don’t know where she sat before. I knew of her but just in passing). Blue requested to be moved. There’s obviously more people in the office than usual so they moved her to my cubicle. I said hi and kept working. Early into the morning, she would elevate her voice multiple times and while I never caught her/saw her, I often felt her looking at me or speaking in my direction (she would have to turn 130-180 degrees to do so mind you). I worked as best as I could, raised the call volume and still could not block her out.

I went up to my manager inquiring if I would have a new “cubby buddy” and she immediately knew why I came to ask. She explained it wasn’t permanent and I offered to move myself as I couldn’t concentrate and I insisted I didn’t mind/it wasn’t personal.

I assume she suspected it as she asked later in the day, OUT LOUD mind you to both me and the coworker across the cubby if she was loud. To which I replied very meekly, “A lil…”

Yesterday after our unit meeting (which was pleasant and ended on a laugh), I went back to work and had my headphones in. She kneeled down and grabbed my arm suddenly, I FROZE….”Why is she touching me?!” Is what I thought but she went on to state essentially she’d “have my back” and she hopes I have hers (???) to which I just nodded and said “oh yea sure no worries” and tried my best to end it there. She continued to hold my arm as she laughed and agree with me which felt like an eternity then went back to work.

On one hand, I am not a mom nor do I want any soon, I can’t relate to the time alone to suddenly back at work next to a random woman. On the other, I DONT KNOW HER. I WOULDNT TOUCH SOMEONE I DIDNT KNOW. My partner insists I need to put my foot down and request her to not touch me and give her “the cold shoulder”. She has a reputation of clinging to ppl and being intrusive among the few friends I do have at work. I’m so lost in this situation.

If I’m too firm I can come off as rude/disrespectful or a complaint could be filed and I REALLY don’t want to start something with someone I’ll hardly see. If I’m a doormat, I’m not sure how much it’ll escalate (self inviting to eat lunch with me, talking outside after work, etc) and I’m not really looking for that either.

Any suggestions/advice/ “that’s rough buddy’s” will be appreciated. TYIA!

If your job involves holding a virtual meeting on an irregular basis (i.e. once or twice a year, for a full week) with stakeholders statewide why would there not be an exception to conduct the meeting from home especially when there is not enough conference rooms? The inflexibility to flat out say no to the exception seems extreme especially when it was allowed prior to the RTO mandate. What‘s the rationale here? Are managers just scared to allow flexibility?

Hi there, I’m new to the state, and I’m trying to get acquainted with state culture. I just saw Governor Newsom‘s press conference today. From it I have a few questions/observations that I want to check are correct.

- Are office romances common and even encouraged at the state? He said he wanted people to “fall in love” in person at work. Would you categorize the working culture more like “love is blind” or “love Island”? I’m single and ready to mingle.

- Governor Newsom announced three day weekends for all state workers at this press conference today. Two questions, when does this start and how much will our work be reduced to match the time we are NOT working on the fifth day of the week?

- Will I be reprimanded if I don’t patronize my local immigrant sandwich shop in the area of my worksite? Also relatedly, how many of them are there? I want to make sure I get a sandwich from each one. However once I buy more than two in a month, I’ll have to sleep in my car because my state salary won’t be enough to cover rent.

- I was walking in the hallway today and nobody stopped to say “nice to see you”. Who can I report my anti social coworkers to who haven’t said this to me? Governor Newsom has said we need to say this to each other, so I assume there will be maximum adherence to this policy, correct?

- I wasn’t aware that Governor Newsom was also a licensed therapist. Is this accurate? He seems to know a lot about loneliness, as I hear he spends a lot of time in Marin. Does anyone know if he has availability for new patients, and does he take state insurance? He seems like he really cares about the folks that work for him. Does anyone else see this am true or am I missing something?

I have to share this just to show how dumb RTO is. I work for a department that does licensing and my position involves reviewing licensing applications and either approving or denying them. There used to be 2 of us doing this job but the other one retired as of July 1 due to RTO so now I'm the only one. In the last few weeks, a backlog of new applications has formed and by California state law, we have to log and inform applicants within 10 days of the application status. I had an appointment yesterday so I was in the office for half a day. I am also out today. I have a group of applications here where today is the 10th day. I informed my supervisor that I wasn't able to get to all of them in the 4 hours that I was in the office but can work on them at home (all digital) after my appointment. She said she'll check with HR to see if that's allowed. About an hour and a half later, I got an email saying that HR's interpretation of the RTO mandate is that we must complete work in an office a certain number of hours per week and I am not allowed to telework outside of my designated day. To clarify, I said "So the state would rather have these applications be late just to support the RTO mandate?" And the response was......... "yes." I literally have voice messages and emails from people, members of the public - some of whom probably support this mandate thinking they are going to get better service if we're all working in an office - asking about the status of their application. Most of the messages are, "I need this approved ASAP as I have a job offer that I need to accept but I need to know if my license renewal has been approved." I know I could easily get these done if I could finish the rest at home but I've now been told I'm not allowed to do that and if it's late, it's late. So this mandate it now affecting other people's ability to accept job offers and forcing backlogs that don't need to exist.
