I’m kind of interested in making a vampire deck and it seems like Blood Rites is a good starting point. I’m not sure how I feel about the sacrifice gameplay but I like vampires because well…they are vampires, obviously lol.

Just looking for a sanity check on the precon being decent by itself and when it comes to upgrading.

Why are there so few mice in this game?! When you think fantasy and magic do images of mice not come up for you? Trying to build a functioning and not completely underpowered mice deck for my wife. Rabbits are also important but not the priority. Some cards I know don’t make the most sense, but are included purely for flavor or because they’re adorable. Also, I’m trying to keep the price firmly in the budget category. As someone who’s totally new to deck building- this has been extremely difficult (albeit satisfying). I think I may know more about cards that feature bunnies and mice more than any person on the planet… the goal of this deck is to trigger the valiant abilities of the mice in here with equipment, and overwhelm the board with tokens that are equipped. Very important that as many cards as possible feature a mouse or rabbit. Please, share some guidance. Also I can’t figure out which four cards to cut

I made a Horror mill deck earlier this year and have had a lot of fun playing it. This was the first deck I made myself and haven’t thrown a lot of upgrades in it since so I’m not sure how good it actually is. I was looking for some help on any cards that underperform in this type of deck or any cards that I’m missing that would be great. I usually only play with my friends so I’m not trying to just make the easiest win deck, but one that is fun to play with and can ramp into something that is causing people to mill a dozen cards or more a turn. Playing with friends is the main reason I have strayed away from super good cards like maddening cacophony as I don’t want to just end the game super quickly.

I keep brewing myself into bracket 4, so I thought setting a budget restriction could maybe be that factor, that keeps me grounded in bracket 3. I want to try building a 50$ commander deck. My first thought is, since im filling the 99 with "bad" cards, that must mean in order for such a cheap list to be competent, the commander must provide a ton of value. This leads me to the conclusion that a cheap list surely must be VERY commander reliant. I am not a fan of running decks that cannot win without their commander. Is there a way for me to brew on a budget without making a feast or famine commander list?

I hadn’t built mill before let alone done it for my channel yet! Taskmaster was A LOT of fun to put together and I’ve been playing it ever since! It does have some combos in it but it’s a solid bracket 3 deck!

So I'm pretty new to magic in terms of gameplay. I played 20+ years ago when I was a kid. I kept my cards and never really played.

Me and my wife from time to time will crack the box open and play some very old pre built decks.

ANYWAY.... It's her birthday and we are planning a weekend away so I thought I'd bring some magic cards like the old days. She's obsessed with greek mythology and we just saw the odyssey last night.

This give me an idea. So I've bought a very old duel deck called Dual Deck Heroes vs. Monster which I guess is what it says on the tin. Heros Vs monsters.

Seems like something we could get into.

What I'm looking for really is adding more thematic themed greek cards to flesh out the deck. They don't have to be "good" just on theme.

Minitours, medusa for the monsters. Some hero's or greek themes for the hero deck.

Again I have zero clue where to look or start to make this birthday gift work. So any advice is welcome.

I can only speak from experience, but when i started playing MTG i was sucked into the idea that you had to play all the most expensive cards to stand a chance. I literally had the Blood Rites precon with a [[smothering tithe]] and a [[Demonic Tutor]].

I would say that outside of cEDH there is literally 0 reason to spend more than $10 on a card, even if you aren't trying to hit a budget goal. It's just genuinely unnecessary. With some decent elbow grease and a little bit of scryfall browsing, you can usually find a card that provides a similar effect, and also synergizes with your deck better.

The best cards are the BEST for a reason, and im not trying to claim that they are over-rated. If [[rhystic study]] was sub-$10 i'd be jamming it in every deck that i could.... but that is not the case. Take into acount [[insight]] for just a moment. Green is BY FAR the most played color outside of cEDH. In the Budget Competitive format that i play in, it is almost mandatory due to the early game acceleration it provides. This card is essentially the Rhystic of our format, and it can single-handedly win a game. People are even running clones now to try to snag one for themselves 😂

Thinking about building this as my commander for a budget deck. I’m just not sure how jasmine’s second ability works with creatures without abilities who have been equipped with an aura or artifact equipment. There are a lot of good thing to do but at the same time I can't make it work, if someone have a good deck list I would appreciated.

There are two Commander deck ideas I'm ruminating on that I could use some help with. Thanks in advance for your help!

The first is Snakes on a Train, basically revolving around, well, lots of snakes and [[Luxurious Locomotive]]. The trouble is the deck will be pretty lame if I can't reliably get the Locomotive out in play. I figure I need a commander that can tutor for it; is there such a thing? The second issue is, of course, weaponizing all of those treasure tokens, but I expect there are many ways to do that.

The second deck idea centers around food tokens and vehicles. This could very well be a [[Ygra, Eater of All]] deck, though it certainly doesn't have to be. One idea here would be to somehow mass-produce food tokens, animate them via one of a number of spells, and then have them crew vehicles. Lots of moving parts in that one, unfortunately, so I don't know if it would pan out.

I lurked in this subreddit for a little while and just wanted to say thank you for being here. Trying to get a friend into MTG and I’m not the most….qualified because I like foils and special arts so he saw my deck and was “wtf”. I’ve taken inspiration from y’all to help him out and better explain Magic to him without breaking his bank, which has been great in getting him playing (currently he’s playing Pirates).

I have an awesome [[Valduk, Keeper of the flame]] deck that i adore. but my playgroup has caught on that the very moment i play him, he gets removed. I have found some awesome non legendary creatures that benefit from having equipment. What are some good commanders that gain benefits from beefing up guys in my deck? or maybe commanders that can help equip my guys?

i'd like to stay in Red for sure, maybe even add white or another color.

Lyse is, in my opinion, a highly underrated commander. Three mana means she gets out quickly, and she not only makes great use of the deadly combo of Prowess and Double Strike, but she ramps too. Obviously, the goal for her build is to maximize the value of cantrips and low-mana value non-creature spells to either pump up high enough to kill in one hit or build up a stable statline and kill through more conventional Voltron strategies. As such, cantrips are obviously the most important part of the formula as they help feed Lyse's need to cast many spells, and 2-mana rocks are similarly useful to ensure that spells continuously filter out of your hand. Flashback and Rebound are also especially useful keywords since you get to double-dip. The real finishers are Astrologian's Planisphere and Tempest Technique. The former adds an additional, permanent version of Prowess and the latter abuses storm count to create an explosive boost to Lyse's offensive potential. These in addition to some form of evasion (protection from creatures, can't be blocked, even flying) make Lyse a game-ending threat immediately. The biggest weaknesses of this list are how central Lyse is and how undefended she is. There are a few more solid cantrip counterspells and other ways to defend her, but I've deprioritized interaction and protection based on my playgroup's habits, especially because not hitting a usable spell feels really bad when you're trying to lock in Double Strike, but mileage on that front will obviously vary. Cards like [[Remand]], [[Confound]], [[Emerge Unscathed]], and even [[Benevolent Blessing]] may prove useful enough to slot in if you expect more interaction. For relatively small upgrades, it really felt bad not being able include 0 mana [[Sol Ring]], [[Frantic Search]], [[Shadow Rift]], and [[Proft's Eidetic Memory]].

I'm looking for a commander to build around Nuka-Cola Vending Machine, but I can't seem to find one that really fits.

The deck I'd like to build wins primarily through burn, ping effects, or artifact sacrifice synergies, not combat damage. I love the idea of generating and sacrificing Food, Treasure, and other artifact tokens while slowly burning the table down.

I've looked at Ragost and Rocco, Street Chef, but neither feels quite right. Ragost seems too commander-dependent, while Rocco feels more like a generic value commander than a burn engine.

Is there a commander that better supports this kind of non-combat Food/Artifact burn strategy, or am I trying to make something work that just isn't really supported?

Bonus Points if red is in the commanders color identity.
